Mor, Sebastiani, and Marinelli Finish in Top 3 of Day 1a of the €550 Grand Event at The Malta Poker Festival

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Luca Sebastiani
Luca Sebastiani

The first starting flight of the €550 Grand Event at The Malta Poker Festival has come to an end after 14 levels of 45 minutes each were played at the Portmaso Casino. The €500,000 guaranteed prize pool attracted 205 players to the first of four Day 1s and a mere 38 of them made it through to Day 2 which will take place on Saturday, November 2.

Claiming the Day 1a chip lead is Eviatar Mor with 441,500 in chips. Mor has four tournament cashes according to The Hendon Mob but there was a six-year gap in his resume with his last two cashes taking place in the last seven months. The last cash before that took place in 2013. Mor is followed closely by someone that might sound a bit more familiar: Luca Sebastiani. Sebastiani bagged 400,000 in chips at the end of the night. The Italian poker pro was near the top of the chip counts throughout most of the day and stayed there.

Another Italian poker player is closing out the podium, Dario Marinelli finished third in the chip counts with 361,500. Rounding out the top five are Linda Nguyen (337,000) and Thomas Lind with 303,000. The latter is actually a Maltese resident from Swedish origin but a big part of the Malta Poker community also known as the Malta Poker Fish group on Facebook.

Also through to Day 2 are Borge Dypvik who finished in seventh place in the 2018 edition of the Malta Poker Festival, Mats Karlsson, Frank Koopmann, Domenico Gala, and Sarah Herzali. Not everyone was that fortunate though, Clint Sammut, Bas de Laat, Serdar Demircan, Luca Beretta, Jacqueline Cachia, Barny Boatman, Andreas Klatt, Daragh Davey, Romain Nardin, and David Lappin are some of the many who fell throughout the day.

But they can all try again as Day 1b is set to start at 2 p.m. local time on Thursday, October 31 with the exact same structure as Day 1a. Registration will remain open for the first eight 45-minute levels and one reentry is permitted per flight. The PokerNews live reporting team will be there too to bring to all the latest as more players battle their way into Day 2.

Marinelli Keeps Adding to His Stack

Level 13 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Dario Marinelli
Dario Marinelli

Jon Garaialde raised to 5,500 from under the gun and was called by Dario Marinelli in the late position while the rest of the table folded.

They both checked through the {9-Spades}{5-Clubs}{j-Hearts} flop to the {3-Clubs} on the turn. Garaialde bet 6,500 which Marinelli called.

The {8-Spades} completed the board on the river and Garaialde checked for the final time. Marinelli glanced at Garaialde before betting 31,500. Garaialde flicked in a chip for the call. Marinelli tabled {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} for the rivered set of eights and that was enough to get Garaialde to pay up as he mucked his cards.

Sujeta Makes the Right Call Against Demircan

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Serdar Demircan
Serdar Demircan

In the last hand of the previous level, Serdar Demircan raised to 3,500 from the middle position. Tomas Sujeta three-bet to 12,500 from the cutoff. Action folded back to Demircan.

"I know you have a good hand, but I have good too, so I have to call," Demircan declared before making the call and then checking blind.

The flop came {5-Clubs}{7-Spades}{a-Hearts}. Sujeta continued with a bet of 7,000 which Demircan check-called.

The turn brought them the {4-Spades}, Demircan led out for 17,000 and Sujeta called.

The river completed the board with the {4-Clubs}. Demircan now fired a bet of 33,000 over the line.

"What do you have? A set of sevens?" Sujeta asked.

"I don't have sevens, I swear!" Demircan replied.

"Set of Fives?" Sujeta pressed.

"I don't have a set of sevens," Demircan replied again.

"I can't fold, I have a full house," Sujeta concluded before putting the chips in and showing {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for the flopped pair of sevens, turned two pair, and rivered full house.

Demircan mucked and complimented Sujeta: "Nice hand, well played,"

Sujeta replied: "yes, you too."

Sammut Won't Let Anyone Touch His Big Blind

Level 4 : 200/300, 300 ante
Clint Sammut (during last year's MPF)
Clint Sammut (during last year's MPF)

Clint Sammut was seen stacking up a bunch of chips after eliminating Julian Micallef and was kind enough to relay what had happened.

"First of all, nobody will touch my big blind!" Sammut explained.

Everyone folded and Micallef limped in from the cutoff. Alan Trueick raised to 1,300 from the small blind and I called, so did Micallef.

The flop came {6-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}, Trueick check-folded to my bet which Micallef called.

The turn was the {k-Hearts}, I bet 5,000, he shoved, I called with {k-Spades}{q-Diamonds} for the turned two pair. Micallef held {q-}{6-} for the flopped lower two pair.

The river completed the board with the {4-Spades} for Sammut to hold and eliminate Micallef.

"Please add that he was lucky," Luca Beretta commented and the whole table chattered away for a while after the hand.

Deschuttyer Shuts Bucci Down

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Tom Deschuytter
Tom Deschuytter

Tom Deschuytter raised to 500 from the early position and was called by Jan Stigter in the middle position and Frederick Field in the hijack. Lorenzo Bucci three-bet to 2,500 from the cutoff and action folded back to Deschuytter who made the call. Stigter folded and Field called too.

The flop came {q-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{7-Clubs}, both Deschuytter and Field checked. Bucci shoved for 18,500 and Deschuytter took a few seconds before shoving too with the bigger stack. Field contemplated his options for a while and then opted to fold to let them battle it out.

Lorenzo Bucci: {q-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Tom Deschuytter: {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}

Bucci had flopped top pair but so did Deschuytter. Deschuytter had also picked up the nut flush draw.

The turn brought them the {k-Clubs} to bring the nut flush to Deschuytter and the {j-Clubs} on the river made the flush even prettier as Bucci was eliminated.
