The final starting flight of the Malta Poker Festival Spring €550 Grand Event at Portomaso Casino, Malta is in the books in controversial circumstances.
The final starting flight, saw 69 players enter with 18 of those making it through to Day 2 on Sunday, May 1.
Mantas Petrauskas of Lithuania was the chip leader of day 1f. Petrauskas kept his cool despite the hostility in the room to bag 434,000 chips. Earlier in the day, he tangled with Colin Paddington who had an interesting day.
In one of the hands of the tournament so far Kevin Houghton hit a straight flush to treble up and eliminating his travel partner and friend Gary Whitehead.
273 players will return to Portomaso Casino on Sunday, May 1 to compete for the massive €486,720 prize pool. There is still plenty of action to be had with three side events on Sunday including the €1,100 MPF Highroller tournament.

The board came which did not help Degennaro and is the last player to be eliminated in the early hours of the morning.
On a flop of , Elmar Schuetz and Vlantouts Korka moved their stacks into the middle.
The turn gave Kourka two pair and the river sends Schuetz to the exit who will feel aggrieved about his elimination considering he was one of the bigger stacks in the room at the end of level 13.
The action is underway with 20 players remaining. Two more eliminations will stop play for the day and the 18 players will bag and tag.

Four ways to the flop of Elmar Schuetz bet 27,500 and was called by Alessandro Siena. Kevin Houghton and Massimo Bruno folded.
Schuetz continued for 31,500 but was met with an all-in from Bruno for 116,000. Schuetz sighed and folded allowing Bruno to rake in a huge pile of chips.
