Schemion Still in the Race to Become First 2-Time MCOP Champion

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Ole Schemion
Ole Schemion

Day 1a of the Master Classics of Poker attracted a field of 96 players to Amsterdam. Some of the biggest players locally visited Holland Casino, as did a small legion of internationally renowned players. After nine 60-minute levels of play, 54 players bagged chips. They'll return on November 21st, as the Main Event goes on a small hiatus before Day 1b gets underway on Tuesday.

Dutchman Daan Mulders, who recorded 2 nice cashes in Barcelona this year, finished up top. He built his 30,000 starting stack into an empire of chips worth 159,000. Mulders skyrocketed to the top of the leaderboard early on after calling November Niner Jorryt van Hoof down with king-nine for a flopped two-pair. Van Hoof was bluffing the river, knowing his aces weren't good anymore. Mulders wasn't folding and was up to almost 100,000 before half the field had even taken their seats. Mulders dropped down all the way back to starting stack after losing with full house over full house. Mulders wasn't so sure he would survive, he said, but it turned out his worries were unjustified. In a short period of time, he took a tablemate's complete stack winning aces against ace-king and ace-queen against king-queen.

Day 1a was full of extraordinary hands, with Sander van Wesemael suffering the most cruel one. He got it in with a backdoored ace-high flush on an unpaired board, only to find out his opponent Marc MacDonnell had made runner runner straight-flush. Van Wesemael bounced back though, bagging 71,800, while MacDonnell would finish the day with just 9,200 in chips.

Ole Schemion, arguably the biggest name to enter the event on Day 1a, had an excellent day at the tables. He doesn't play as frequently as he used to, but the MCOP in Amsterdam probably isn't a tournament Schemion plans on missing anytime soon. Schemion won the Main Event here back in 2012 (€286,200) and won the Super High Roller here last year (€160,875). While his aces got cracked by five-deuce at one point today, he ended the day with a solid 96,100.

Other big stacks to finish the day are Marijn van Puffelen (144,400), Wim Anne Wesselink (102,500), Orpen Kisacikoglu (95,800) and Jan Eric Schwippert (90,900).

Play in the Main Event resumes at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21st. For the first time this year, a turbo Day 1c is scheduled for 10 p.m. that day. Players have the option to reenter once per flight, and once more before the start-of-play on Day 2. So even those who have busted, like Govert Metaal, Claas Segebrecht, and November Niner Michiel Brummelhuis, still have plenty of options to try and become the next MCOP champion.

On Saturday, the €25,500 Super High Roller starts. PokerNews.com will be on the ground to cover that event from start to finish, so keep your eyes out for updates from that event this weekend.

Van Wesemael Suffers the Ultimate Beat, Loses Ace-High Flush to Straight Flush

"You just missed a nice hand," Van Wesemael said with a wry smile on his face. "You want the details?"

From middle position, Van Wesemael told us, he opened for 1,000. Small blind Marc MacDonnell called and so did big blind Antoine Vranken.

The blinds checked on {8-Clubs}{3-}{2-} and Van Wesemael bet 1,800. Both of his opponents called.

As the {7-Clubs} hit the turn, MacDonnell bet 5,600. Vranken folded, Van Wesemael called.

The {6-Clubs} completed the board and MacDonnell bet 15,000 with 30,500 behind. Van Wesemael shoved and MacDonnell snap-called.

Van Wesemael had {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for the ace-high flush, but it turned out to be no good. MacDonnell tabled {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for the straight flush and collected the giant pot.

Van Hoof Busts

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Jorryt van Hoof
Jorryt van Hoof

While he lost a decent amount of chips not too long ago when he lost with aces, he still had a sizable stack left. Despite that, he just busted and instantly reentered. His former tablemate (and good friend) Puk Nabuurs filled us in on the details of the hand.

Hossein Ensan opened the button and Van Hoof 3-bet from the small blind. Ensan called and called all streets as Van Hoof fired 3 bullets on {3-}{5-}{8-} (2 spades), {K-}, {6-Spades}.

Van Hoof showed {A-}{Q-} for nothing much, Ensan tabled {10-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for 4th pair.

Wesselink Doubles Through Helppi

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Wim Anne Wesselink
Wim Anne Wesselink

Wim Anne Wesselink called us over, telling us he just doubled through his neighbor Juha Helppi.

Wesselink opened the hijack for 700 and Helppi, in the cutoff, 3-bet to 2,000. As the action folded back around to Wesselink, he called.

Wesselink check-called a bet of 2,400 on {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{5-Clubs} before checking again on the {Q-Hearts} turn. This time, Helppi bet 6,000. Wesselink shoved for around 21,000 and Helppi called.

Juha Helppi: {A-}{J-}
Wim Anne Wesselink: {A-Hearts}{5-Hearts}

The river {K-} didn't change a thing and Wesselink scored the full double.

Stegeman Doubles

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Alberto Stegeman
Alberto Stegeman

Mark Roovers opened under the gun for 500 and his neighbor, Dutch tv personality Alberto Stegeman, 3-bet to 1,700. Shander de Vries, who won the inaugural €2,000 Hyper Turbo at the start of this MCOP, cold-called from the hijack. Roovers called as well.

Roovers checked on {7-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} and Stegeman bet 3,500. De Vries called, Roovers folded.

Stegeman didn't hold back on the {3-Spades} turn, betting 7,500. De Vries called once more.

The {6-Spades} paired the board and Stegeman shoved all in for about 23,000. De Vries contemplated what to do for just a bit before he tossed in a 25-chip to indicate the call.

Stegeman showed {8-Clubs}{8-Spades} for the second nuts, De Vries mucked but was forced to show his {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} since it was an all in and call situation.

Minten Exits

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Niek Minten
Niek Minten

We ran into Niek Minten on the rail, and he told us the story of his demise.

Joep van den Bijgaart opened for 500 and the small blind 3-bet to 1,350. Niek Minten in the big blind and cold 4-bet to 3,300, Van den Bijgaart folded but the small blind called.

The flop came {9-}{8-}{3-} with 2 diamonds and the small blind checked. Minten bet 2,525 and his neighbor check-raised to 8,300. Minten shoved for about 15,000 or so total and the small blind called.

Small blind: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}
Niek Minten: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-}

The {K-} on the turn spelled doom for Minten and the {6-Hearts} on the river couldn't save him.

Minten contemplates reentering now or waiting for Day 1b to give it another shot.

MacDonnell Busts Meijer van Putten

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Jasper Meijer van Putten
Jasper Meijer van Putten

We missed the pre-flop action, but table mate Sander van Wesemael informed us that Jasper Meijer van Putten opened from middle position for 500. Marc MacDonnell in the cutoff then 3-bet to 1,800 which forced out the button and both blinds. Meijer van Putten 4-bet to 5,000 and MacDonnell called.

As we arrived, the dealer was just done putting out the flop of {8-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{5-Clubs}. Meijer van Putten bet 3,300 and MacDonnell called.

Meijer van Putten bet another 8,500 on the {3-Hearts} turn and MacDonnell called once more.

With the {Q-Spades} completing the board, Meijer van Putten shoved. We're unsure of the amount as MacDonnell called rather quickly and the showdown part of the hand started.

Meijer van Putten showed {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds} but he turned out beat as MacDonnell tabled {Q-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}.

Jasper Meijer van Putten has the option to reenter now, later today, or start over on Day 1b and/or Day 1c. So he's out but can still buy back in if he wants to.

Arends Short

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Jans Arends
Jans Arends

We only arrived when the river was already out, but Arends' neighbor Robin Ylitalo was kind enough to give us the details of what had happened before.

Jans “Graftekkel” Arends had opened and a player had called before the big blind squeezed. Arends answered with a 4-bet and the first caller folded, the big blind called.

The big blind check-called a bet on the flop of {4-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} and another bet on the {Q-Diamonds} turn. The river {Q-Clubs} saw the big blind check. Arends shoved and the big blind tanked for a bit before he called.

Arends showed {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts} but that hand proved no-good as the big blind showed {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}. Arends was left with 2,500 after the hand.

The Master Classics of Poker Starts Today!

Hakim Zoufri won the MCOP Main Event in 2016 for €275,608
Hakim Zoufri won the MCOP Main Event in 2016 for €275,608

The Master Classics of Poker (MCOP) is one of the longest-running live poker tournament series still around. Last year, the festival doubled its schedule to include more than two dozen events to celebrate its 25th anniversary. This year's schedule is equally as big for its 26th edition, taking place at the Holland Casino Amsterdam.

The highlight of the poker festival is, of course, the MCOP €4,300 Main Event. Last year, Dutch player Hakim Zoufri won the event for €275,608 outlasting a field of 356 entrants.

That marked the fourth time this decade the trophy was kept on home soil as David Boyaciyan (2011 - €382,200), Noah Boeken (2013 - €306,821) and Ruben Visser (2014 - €306,821) also notched recent victories in the Main Event.

Main Event

This year's Main Event should prove to be equally exciting. The tournament is a deep-stacked affair with players starting out with 30,000 in chips. Blind levels increase every 60 minutes during the first two opening flights on Nov. 17 and Nov. 21 and every 20 minutes during a turbo-flight on Nov. 21. Players are allowed to re-enter once per flight, and once more before the start-of-play on Day 2.

Players bagging chips will combine for Day 2 on Nov. 22 and the tournament will play through Nov. 24 until a winner is crowned. Starting on Day 3, blinds go up to 75 minutes, providing players a deeper structure.
