Van Brugge-Style

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Kees van Brugge (photo from an earlier event)
Kees van Brugge (photo from an earlier event)

We could hardly see Kees van Brugge, hiding behind massive towers of chips stacked at least 40 high. Van Brugge told us he had done that in typical "Van Brugge Style".

Van Brugge explained how he had just doubled to 66,000 when he opened the button with {A-Spades}{6-Spades}. Dan Carter, in the small blind, 3-bet and Van Brugge called. The flop came {A-}{Q-Spades}{9-Spades} and Carter made a continuation bet. Van Brugge called.

The turn was a {5-} bringing a second flush draw. Carter shoved for 1.5 times the pot and Van Brugge called.

Carter had {A-}{J-} and was soon out of there as a {X-Spades} hit the river to complete Van Brugge's flush.

Van Brugge wasn't too worried when he got it in, "Everyone knew I was gonna get there," he proclaimed with a big smile on his face.

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Govert Metaal
Govert Metaal

Govert Metaal limped under the gun and his neighbor Jean-Philippe Schoonbrood under the gun plus over limped.

The player next to them raised and Zhong Chen 3-bet to 10,000. When the action got back to Metaal, he 4-bet to 38,500. Schoonbrood wasn't backing down and shoved for 178,300. The action folded to Metaal who called all in for just less than that.

Jean-Philippe Schoonbrood: {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}
Govert Metaal: {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}

The biggest pot of the tournament was going to be a bad beat for Metaal: {K-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{2-Clubs} on the flop. The {6-Clubs} hit the turn and gave Metaal some hope but the {9-Spades} on the river was the wrong kind of black card for him.

Van Puffelen showed {9-Clubs}{9-Spades} for quads and his opponent had {K-}{K-}.
