Frank, Lovgren, and Peters Headline Final 161 of the MPP Main Event as the Bubble Looms

Christopher Frank
Christopher Frank

The race to the money is on when Day 3 of the $5,300 Luxon Pay Mediterranean Poker Party Main Event begins at noon local time.

Just 161 players out of a starting field of 1,032 will return inside the Merit Royal Diamond Hotel, but only 155 will finish in the money. Six players will leave North Cyprus empty-handed.

Christopher Frank is in no danger of being one of them. The German pro with more than $2,500,000 in career live winnings surged toward the end of the night yesterday and enters Day 3 in the top five with 1,710,000. Sergey Bobrik is the chip leader with 2,366,000, followed by Andrey Litvinov (2,173,000), Dawid Smolka (2,050,000), and Ran Ilani (1,920,000).

Also near the top of the leaderboard are Sofia Lovgren (1,250,000) and David Peters (913,000). Further down the counts are Niall Farrell (613,000), Phillip Nagy (559,000), Tony G (305,000), Bruno Fitoussi (261,000), Faraz Jaka (192,000), and Paul Phua (161,000).

Action will pick up on Level 19, with blinds of 8,000/16,000 and a 16,000 big blind ante. There will be a 20-minute break after every two levels, and a 60-minute dinner break following Level 24. The plan for today is to play 10 hour-long levels.

The money bubble is near and the final table awaits for the surviving 161 players. PokerNews will be on hand throughout the day as the field inches its way towards crowning a champion at this seaside resort in the eastern Mediterranean.

Garbi Falls Victim to the River

Level 19 : Blinds 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante

On the first hand of Day 3, Ravid Garbi shoved for his last 135,000 from middle position and Dmitry Gromov reshoved on the button. The rest of the table got out of the way.

Ravid Garbi: {k-Spades}{j-Spades}
Dmitry Gromov: {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}

Garbi took the lead on the {j-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{7-Spades} flop with two pair and stayed in front as the {6-Hearts} fell on the turn. The river came the {q-Diamonds} and Garbi shot out of his seat and made a quick exit as Gromov made queens and sevens to win the pot and bring the field one closer to the bubble.

Losev Takes Out Azor

Level 19 : Blinds 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante

Ran Azor was all in for 156,000 from the small blind and up against Alexey Losev on the button.

Ran Azor: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}
Alexey Losev: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Losev hit a set on the {j-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{3-Clubs} flop, while Azor picked up a straight draw. The Israeli couldn't connect with the {5-Spades}{4-Spades} turn and river and hit the rail just short of the money.

Smolka Fires Three Streets to Take Chip Lead

Level 19 : Blinds 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Dawid Smolka
Dawid Smolka

The flop read {k-Spades}{8-Clubs}{q-Spades}. From the small blind Dawid Smolka bet 125,000 and was called by Andrey Litvinov who was in the cutoff to grow the pot to around 600,000.

The turn brought the {10-Spades} to bring three to a royal flush. Smolka led for 400,000 and Litvinoc called after some thought to swell the pot to well over a million.

The river came a blank looking {6-Hearts}. Smolka used a time extension before putting together a bet of 1,200,000 and sliding the assortment of stacks forward.

Litvinov went into the tank and used up three time banks before eventually folding his hand to send a chunk of his stack over to the new chip leader.

Lipp Shoves on Higgins in Massive Pot

Level 19 : Blinds 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante

Simon Higgins raised to 32,000 from the cutoff before Matthias Lipp three-bet to 125,000 in the small blind. Higgins called and the flop came {a-Spades}{7-Clubs}{8-Hearts}.

Lipp continued for 75,000 and Higgins again called to see the {k-Clubs} on the turn. Lipp went into his time banks before pushing forward a bet of 350,000.

Higgins quickly called and the river came the {4-Spades}. Lipp again used a time bank before moving all in for around 600,000. Higgins snap-folded.

"I can beat ace-king," Higgins said.

"You can beat ace-king and you folded," Lipp responded as he dragged in the pot.

The first three hands of hand-for-hand play haven't resulted in any eliminations so far.
