Day 1a of the $2,200 Global Poker Championship, running at Merit Crystal Cove Casino as part of the 2026 Mediterranean Poker Party, has concluded. Of the 124 total entries to the flight, 19 made it through. They are in the money and will return on Day 2 to play for a share of the $2,000,000 guaranteed prize pool.
After an excellent run throughout the day, Sergei Petrushevskii topped the counts with 2,420,000. Petrushevskii doubled up during the first level and kept on gaining momentum. During the penultimate level, he delivered a double knockout with pocket rockets in a pot that sent his stack soaring above the two million mark.
Petrushevskii is closely tailed by Felipe Costa, who bagged for 2,135,000. Costa lost some of his stack after being forced to fold to a four-bet, but soon made it back when he picked up pocket kings in an all-in confrontation.
Costa is the only player other than Petrushevskii to breach two million chips, and has more than double the chip stack of fourth place Andrej Desset, who bagged for 1,020,000. Serkan Sariaslan sits in third with 1,245,000.

Still in the mix are Moussa Ahmad, who won the $10,400 GGMillion$ event at the Onyx Super High Roller Series last year for a cool $1,000,000; Dmitry Gromov, who has over $4 million in cashes to his name; and Yiannis Liperis, who sits atop the All Time Money List as Cyprus' number one player.
There's still two more chances for players to find a bag. Day 1c kicks off tomorrow at 12 p.m. local time, sticking with the same structure of 100,000 starting chips and 30-minute blinds. Players who bag from any of the four total starting flights return for Day 2 on September 19 to play deeper into the money.

Two hands were going on simultaneously after a long period of inaction. On Table 3, Ali El-Siblani was all in and at risk against chip leader Sergei Petrushevskii.

The board ran out A♥5♦K♠2♠5♠ to give Petrushevskii a pair of kings. El-Siblani fell in 21st place, leaving the players on Table 1 to play out their hand on the stone bubble.
In the other hand, Felipe Costa open-raised to 60,000 and was met with a reraise to 180,000 from Marios Theophanous. Costa then clicked it back to 300,000 and Theophanous called.
The chips all went in on the turn on a board of 6♠3♦3♣7♣ and players revealed their cards.

The river was the harmless 2♥ and Costa held with his pocket aces, making two pair with the threes on the board. He won the pot and Theophanous was sent to the rail on the bubble.

Action slowed right down with lots of tanking and cautious play as the money bubble approached. There are 21 players left and 19 are set to bag for Day 2.

Action was on the flop on a board of 2♣2♦J♠ and Akin Tuna moved all in. Felipe Costa quickly made the call and had his opponent covered as the cards were revealed.

Tuna was looking like a fish out of water as he hunted for a jack. The turn was the A♣ and river the 8♦. Costa held to win the pot, sending Tuna out of the tournament close to the money.

Adrian State pushed all in for 155,000 from under the gun and Sergei Petrushevskii called in middle position. Guy Gorelik then moved all in with a big stack of over 600,000 from the big blind. Petrushevskii immediately looked him up to put both players at risk in the biggest pot of the day.

Petrushevskii had picked up pocket aces, leaving both of his opponents drawing very thin. State picked up a flush draw on the 3♥7♣Q♣ flop, but found no help on the Q♦ turn.
The river came the 4♥ and Petrushevskii held, sending State and Gorelik to the exit with just a few players left to bust before the money. Petrushevskii, meanwhile, raked in a huge pot that further extended his chip lead to over 2,000,000.
