Now It Gets Interesting

Welcome back to the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for Day 3 of the PokerStars.net North American Poker Tour Venetian Main Event. Two days and fourteen levels of play have reduced the field from 872 starters to 149 players who are starting to believe. The belief is that they have a chance to maybe -- just maybe! -- take down the whole tournament and win more than $800,000.

Today promises to be a long day. The schedule calls for play to continue until there are 24 players remaining. Given that we're starting with 149, and that we've yet to hit the money bubble, things could take a while here. We anticipate playing 9 or 10 levels to get down to 24 players.

Normally at the start of day we expect play to be exceedingly quick as the shortest of the short stacks, energized after a night of sleep, look to double up quickly. But with 128 players being paid, the money bubble is just 21 places away. The short stacks today may take a different strategy of trying to turtle their way into the money. That could delay the proceedings.

Certainly the players at the top of the chip counts will be looking to play fast and apply pressure to their shorter-stacked tablemates. Our Top Five to start the day includes Jason Dewitt, David Miscikowski, Steve Billirakis, Andy Seth and chip leader Andy Lichtenberger.

The Power of a Big Stack

When you have a big stack, you can force your opponents to make decisions that they'd rather not make. Andy Lichtenberger is putting on a demonstration of that power so far this afternoon. He recently opened a pot for 10,500, then called the small blind's re-raise to 32,000. On a heads-up flop of {k-Clubs}

, the small blind made a roughly half-pot bet of 28,000. Lichtenberger's raise to 60,000 induced a snap-fold and won him the pot.

Smith's Over-Bet Chases Marcus

One table that has caught our eye today is Table 57, where Van Marcus, Bill Reynolds, Justin Smith and James Mackey are all seated next to each other in Seats 5 through 8. Marcus was the aggressor in a recent pot, raising his button to 10,200. Smith called from the big blind, then check-called another 13,000 on a flop of {7-Hearts}

. Both players checked the {6-Spades}

turn.

When the river fell {2-Hearts}

, Smith made an over-bet of 58,000. Marcus could be seen talking to himself as he riffled 58,000 in chips that represented a call. After about 90 seconds of deliberation, he folded, flashing a {J-Hearts}

The Wong Call

Danny Wong fired a bet of 15,000 on the turn with the board reading {J-Clubs}

. His opponent, Thomas Fuller, raised to 50,000. Wong made the call.

The river card completed the board with the {3-Spades}

and Wong checked with about 240,000 left in his stack. Fuller bet 100,000 and Wong went into the tank for several minutes. After a while of what looked to be a painful tank session, Wong tossed in the call. Fuller showed him trip fours with the {7-Diamonds}

and Wong mucked, dropping to 140,000 chips. Fuller increased to about 600,000.

Miscikowski Takes Over the Chip Lead

David Miscikowski was a Top Five stack to start the day. Now he is a Top One stack. Players at the table related that Miscikowski was involved in a big hand to start the day, calling a five-bet all-in shove with {A-?}

and finding himself against {J-?}

. Miscikowski's {A-?}

held, propelling him to approximately 800,000 in chips.

Jimmy Fricke was all in on the bored of {J-Clubs}

versus Frank Traino who made the call. Fricke held a straight with the {8-Diamonds}

and Traino held a straight as well with the {K-Diamonds}

. Only a queen on the river would cause a pot to not be chopped and eliminated Fricke. The river was safe for Fricke though when the {A-Hearts}

fell and the two players chopped up the pot.
