Shak Fires Back

Level 29 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante

Vanessa Selbst raised to 200,000 from the button, a story we've become used to. This time was different, though, and for only the second time in heads-up play, Dan Shak three-bet. He made it 600,000 straight, and Selbst folded without incident.

Ace-High Good

Level 29 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante

Vanessa Selbst opened to 200,000 from the button and Dan Shak called to see a flop.

It came {2-Spades} {8-Spades} {5-Diamonds}, and it went check-check to the {J-Clubs} turn. When Shak checked again, Selbst bet 100,000, and Shak made the call. The river was the {5-Spades}, and it went check-check again.

Selbst called out, "Ace-high" with her ace-queen offsuit, and it was good enough to drag the pot.

Selbst has now crossed the 9-million-chip mark.

Selbst Doubles to Take the Lead

Level 29 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante

Vanessa Selbst made it 200,000 to play on the button, but Dan Shak re-raised to 600,000 from the big blind. Selbst came back over the with a four-bet to 1,300,000 with Shak quickly calling.

The flop fell {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{2-Spades} which Shak checked. Selbst bet 800,000, quickly hearing Shak shove with the bigger stack. An immediate all-in call from Selbst revealed {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}, miles ahead of Shak's {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}. The {J-Clubs} turn gave Shak a chance with a straight draw, but the {J-Spades} river clinched it for Selbst.

Selbst is up to 8,730,000, leaving Shak with just 2,980,000.

On the second hand of the level, Vanessa Selbst opened to 200,000, and Dan Shak defended his big blind with a call.

The flop came {K-Clubs} {K-Spades} {7-Hearts}, and Selbst continued out with the same 200,000 chips. Shak flatted, and the {8-Hearts} landed on the turn. Shak checked a second time, and Selbst checked it back to see the {2-Spades} fill out the board. Shak now took the lead with a 500,000-chip bet of his own, and Selbst quickly called.

Shak turned over, um, just {K-Diamonds} {K-Hearts}, and Selbst could only smirk at her opponent's quads. With that pot, Shak climbs back up over 7 million, leaving Selbst with 4.475 million.

Vanessa Selbst min-raised to 160,000 on the button and Dan Shak defended his big blind.

The flop fell {J-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{4-Spades} and Shak checked. Selbst bet 155,000, but Shak quickly popped it to 355,000. Selbst called, landing the {9-Diamonds} on the turn. Shak put out a bet of 500,000. A call from Selbst delivered the {4-Diamonds} river. Shak fired 800,000, which sent Selbst into the tank. About two minutes passed before Selbst re-raised all in for about 2.6 million total. Shak gave it up rather quickly and surrendered the pot.

Closin' the Gap Slowly

Level 28 : 40,000/80,000, 5,000 ante

Eight-High For Shak

Level 28 : 40,000/80,000, 5,000 ante

Vanessa Selbst limped in from the button, and Dan Shak knocked the table for a free flop from the big blind.

They both checked the {J-Diamonds} {4-Spades} {3-Diamonds} flop, and the {5-Spades} drew a bet of 100,000 from Shak. Selbst called, and she called another 200,000 after the {9-Diamonds} river.

"Eight-high," Shak announced, and Selbst's {A-} {3-} won her the first showdown pot of the after-dinner session.
