Day 4 Completed

Day 4 Done With Selbst in Second Again

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 3,000 ante
Chip leader Tyler Kenney
Chip leader Tyler Kenney

Day 4 of the PokerStars.net NAPT Mohegan Sun is all over but the shoutin'. What began nearly eight hours ago with 24 players is now history with just eight souls surviving to see one final day.

When the starting gun fired today, it was Vanessa Selbst in control and looking for a remarkable repeat victory here at Mohegan Sun. She matriculated her stack up over 2 million in short order, and it was looking like the Vanessa Selbst show was going to run away with this thing a day early. Things cooled down for the Team PokerStars Pro during the last couple levels, though, and she'll have to settle for entering the final table in second place. It's probably a good omen. Last year, Selbst was the chip leader for the bulk of Day 3 and 4 before relinquishing that top spot during nine-handed play. You remember how that ended up working out for her...

In any event, with Selbst sliding a bit, the top spot belongs to Tyler Kenney alone now. He began this penultimate day in the middle of the pack with just shy of a half million chips, and he sat still for the first few rounds of the day before mounting an attack on the leaders. During Level 22, Kenney won a big pot off David Stefanski to crest the million-chip mark, and soon thereafter, he preflop five-bet his way past the two-million mark. A minute later, he and Selbst tangled up in a pot that pulled the two of them very close in chips, and she doubled up Aaron Overton a few minutes later to complete the changing of power. It was Kenney all alone at the top, and he continued to bolster his stack for the rest of the night, bagging up 3.021 million at night's end to set the pace for tomorrow.

Here's how the rest of the stacks look heading into the final table:

SeatPlayerChips
1Joe Tehan1,238,000
2Thomas Hoglund Jr.541,000
3Dan Shak1,571,000
4Vincent Rubianes1,711,000
5Steve O'Dwyer1,032,000
6Tyler Kenney3,021,000
7Aaron Overton373,000
8Vanessa Selbst2,249,000

The action resumes at high noon tomorrow under the bright lights of the ESPN cameras, and it figures to be a memorable final table. All eyes will be on Selbst as she tries for the unprecedented repeat, and we'll have a ringside seat to bring you all of the ace-cracking action leading to the crowning of our champion.

Until tomorrow, all that's left is goodnight.

Corey Hochman Eliminated in 9th Place ($26,000)

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 3,000 ante
Corey Hochman - 9th place
Corey Hochman - 9th place

First in from middle position, Corey Hochman shoved all in for his last ~300,000. A few players folded to his left, but small blind Vincent Rubianes looked down at {A-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} and re-shoved from the small blind. That isolated him against Hochman, and the at-risk player was in bad shape with his {Q-Hearts} {10-Hearts}.

Board: {5-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} {5-Spades} {A-Clubs} {10-Diamonds}

Hochman picked up a straight draw on the turn, but the river was too little, too late. Tens up is no good, and it's taken the rest of Hochman's chips. He's out in ninth place, setting our final table and cueing the end of Day 4.

We'll be right back to wrap it up with some chip counts for you.

Stay Away From My Blinds!

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 3,000 ante
Steve O'Dwyer
Steve O'Dwyer

Vanessa Selbst opened the pot with a middle-postion raise, and the table passed all the way around to the blinds. In the big, Steve O'Dwyer three-bet shoved, and Selbst laid it down.

On the next hand, it was Joe Tehan opening the pot with a raise before O'Dwyer shoved in again, this time from the small blind. Tehan passed as well, and O'Dwyer took down his second pot in a row.

They were small pots, but two in a row is a nice boost. It's pushed O'Dwyer up to about 875,000 again.

Draw!

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 2,000 ante

The final nine players have been combined around one table, and we'll play for one more knockout today. Here's how the field looks as they set up for nine-handed play:

David Stefanski Eliminated in 10th Place ($26,000)

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 2,000 ante
David Stefanski - 10th place
David Stefanski - 10th place

Tyler Kenney is really charging through this Day 4.

In the last pot, he opened to 55,000 from the button, and David Stefanski shoved in for 450,000 total. Kenney made the quick call with {A-Spades} {K-Diamonds}, and Stefanski sunk in his chair a bit as he tabled his inferior {A-Clubs} {10-Clubs}.

Stefanski managed to flop a ten, but it came with a devastating king as well. The board ran {3-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} {K-Hearts} {3-Hearts} {8-Clubs}, and that's the end of the road for Stefanski. He's out in 10th place, good for a pay bump up to $26,000.

Kenney appears to have crossed the 3-million-chip mark with that knockout. We count him down at about 3.12 million now.

Jacobo Fernandez Eliminated in 11th Place ($21,000)

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 2,000 ante
Jacobo Fernandez - 11th place
Jacobo Fernandez - 11th place

Joe Tehan made it 65,000 to go before the flop, and Jacobo Fernandez shoved in for about 180,000 total. Tehan quickly called with {J-Hearts} {J-Diamonds}, and Fernandez was flipping for the double with {K-Hearts} {Q-Spades}.

The board came ace-high with a bunch of rags, and Fernandez could not find a card to stay alive. He's out in 11th place, good for a $21,000 consolation prize.

There's a growing movement to slap an "NAPTehan" nickname on Joe. He took down the NAPT event at the Bicycle Casino in LA last year, and he's got his sights set on another NAPT final table. Mark him down for 1.42 million now.

The Whole Hoglund, Jr.

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 2,000 ante
Thomas Hoglund, Jr.
Thomas Hoglund, Jr.

From the button, David Stefanski opened to 50,000, and he called when Thomas Hoglund, Jr. shoved all in for 310,000. Hoglund, Jr. had the goods, showing up {Q-Clubs} {Q-Spades} against Stefanski's {A-Spades} {Q-Hearts}.

The dealer didn't force much of a sweat, and Hoglund Jr.'s pair held on the {10-Spades} {3-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {K-Hearts} {10-Hearts}. Just like that, the short stack has doubled back to 654,000, and Stefanski has now taken over that title with 480,000 chips left.

Another Slide For Selbst

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 2,000 ante
Vanessa Selbst
Vanessa Selbst

First in from the cutoff seat, Aaron Overton shoved his last 350,000 chips into the middle. The button folded quickly, but Vanessa Selbst made the call in the small blind to put Overton to the test. She turned up {7-Spades} {7-Clubs}, and her opponent was racing for double or nothing with {9-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds}.

It would be double. The board ran {8-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {K-Clubs} (uh oh, flush draw!) {6-Spades} {2-Hearts}, and Overton has taken a bite out of Selbst. That double moves him back to 730,000, while Selbst has relinquished the chip lead for the first time in a long time. She's back to 2.08 million now, and it's Tyler Kenney with the stack to chase.
