Timoshenko's Out-of-the-box Play Leaves Him Crippled

Rare misstep for Timoshenko
Rare misstep for Timoshenko
Tony G limped in with the {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and then Yevgeniy Timoshenko attacked the limp with a raise to 16,000 with the {K-Diamonds}{J-Spades}. Timoshenko has often been attacking the limps and did so again here. Giovanni Safina called with the {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} and then Daniel Negreanu called with the {A-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. Phil Hellmuth folded the small blind with the {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and then Ian Frazer folded {J-?}{5-?} from the big blind.

The flop smacked Safina in the face when it came down {Q-Spades}{4-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}. Tony G and Timoshenko checked and then Safina bet 22,000. Negreanu folded and then Tony G followed suit. Timoshenko had other things in mind. He thought for a little while and then raised to 67,000. Safina just smooth called.

One of the best cards peeled off on the turn for Timoshenko, the {10-Spades}. It gave him an open-ended straight draw and he tanked again. He had about a pot-sized bet left in his stack and opted to just check. Safina fired a bet of 70,000 into the pot of 204,000. Timoshenko check-raised all in for 236,000 and Safina quickly called with the current nuts.

The river card was the {6-Clubs} and Timoshenko could've come from behind to hit his draw and was knocked down to a crippling 4,000 chips.
