Stelmak Sends Van Gelder Home

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 2,000 ante
Dmitriy Stelmak knocks out Martin van Gelder
Dmitriy Stelmak knocks out Martin van Gelder

Martin van Gelder has been eliminated after he four-bet shoved on the button for his last 700,000 against Dmitriy Stelmak who was in the small blind. Stelmak called with {j-Spades}{j-Hearts} which held a slight mathematical edge over van Gelder's {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}.

The board ran {10-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{4-Clubs}{9-Hearts} eliminating van Gelder from the tournament and bringing Stelmak's stack to 1.4 million chips.

Rink Drags a Pot

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante

Paulo Rink opened to 38,000, and Calvin Anderson three-bet him to 82,000. Rink called, and he led out with a bet of 36,000 on the {A-Hearts} {7-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} flop. Anderson promptly raised to 89,000, and Rink came right back over the top with a reraise to 189,000. Anderson spent a few long minutes in the tank before surrendering just as the break hit.

Froehlich Pulls in Three Straight Pots

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Eric Froehlich chipping up
Eric Froehlich chipping up

Eric Froehlich just went on a serious heater moments ago, winning three straight pots at his table.

In the first pot Eric Beren opened to 36,000 from the cutoff and Froehlich three-bet to 96,000 on the button. The blinds released and so did Beren.

In the second pot Calvin Anderson opened to 32,000 from middle position, Beren flatted in the hijack seat and Froehlich three-bet to 132,000 in the cutoff. The action folded back to Anderson and he and Beren folded.

The third hand we didn't catch until the turn where the board read {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}{q-Spades}{3-Clubs}. Froehlich was heads up with Galen Hall and there was about 300,000 in the middle. Both players checked. The river was the {10-Diamonds} and both players checked again. Hall was forced to show his hand because he was the last aggressor, and he sheepishly tabled {6-Spades}{3-Spades} for a busted flush draw. Froehlich opened {8-Hearts}{8-Spades} for a winning pair of eights, and after his rush is now up to 1.55 million chips.

Nughes' Jacks Eliminated by Spadavecchia's Queens

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante

John Spadavecchia put in a standard raise under the gun only to have Davide Nughes move all in for 113,000 more from the cutoff. The blinds got out of the way and Spadavecchia made the call.

Nughes: {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}
Spadavecchia: {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}

Nughes was way behind and couldn't catch up as the board ran out {6-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{6-Spades}{6-Clubs}{3-Hearts}. Spadavecchia, who finished third in the 1994 World Series of Poker Main Event, pumped his fist in celebration as he chipped up to 465,000. Meanwhile, Nughes was sent to the rail.

Stelmak Finds a Big Pot

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante

William Givens opened the pot to 40,000 under the gun, and Dmitry Stelmak called on the button. Ilan Rouah called in the small blind, and big blind Steven Curtin came along as well for a four-handed flop.

The flop came out {9-Diamonds} {3-Spades} {6-Spades}, and the tabled checked to the button. Stelmak took his cue to bet 80,000 at the pot, and Rouah quickly called. Curtin wanted to play for more, though, and he check-raised to 350,000 total. Givens had already folded, and Stelmak called all in for 295,000 total. Rouah got the message and folded, and Stelmak was at risk as the cards were turned up:

Stelmak: {A-Diamonds} {A-Hearts}
Curtin: {A-Spades} {8-Spades}

Curtin was drawing at the flush, but the spades would never materialize. The turn {5-Hearts} and river {8-Clubs} were safe for Stelmak, and he's doubled up and then some. Mark him down for 848,000 now.

Pesek Sends Sands to the Beach

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Dave Sands
Dave Sands

From the cutoff seat, Michael Pesek opened with a raise to 33,000. David "Doc" Sands had just played a three-way all in on the last hand and pushed his stack right back into the middle. He was all in from the button for 148,000. After the blinds folded, Pesek tanked. He got a count on the shove amount and then tanked a bit more. Eventually, he made the call.

Sands turned over the {A-Clubs}{J-Spades} and was ahead of the {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} that Pesek held. Pesek was still very live with his suited connectors and was looking to knock out Sands.

The flop came down {K-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{6-Spades} and Pesek picked up a straight draw. Live cards and a straight draw for Pesek had Sands standing on his feet sweating the turn and river.

The turn brought the {4-Hearts} and that missed, but the {5-Spades} on the river nailed Pesek with a straight and finished off Sands. Pesek moved to 750,000 in chips.

Chris Oliver Loses a Pot

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante

We can't believe it either.

Marcio Barbieri went all in from middle position for 203,000 and next to act from the hijack, Chris Oliver called. The rest of the table folded and the cards were revealed.

Barbieri: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}
Oliver: {6-Clubs}{6-Spades}

The board ran out {Q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{4-Clubs}, safe for Barbieri to double to about 448,000. Oliver is still the overwhelming chip leader with about 3,500,000.
