Better Late Than Never

Duhamel's Aces

Jonathan Duhamel opened to 600 from early position, Marc-Andre Ladouceur called in the hijack seat, and Fabian Quoss defended from the big blind. The flop fell {2-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}, and the action checked to Ladouceur. He tossed out 1,200, and only Duhamel called.

The turn was the {2-Clubs}, Duhamel checked again, and Ladouceur fired 2,600. Duhamel called.

The river was the {5-Hearts}, and for the first time, Duhamel led. The 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion flipped forward four red T1,000 chips, and Ladouceur called. Duhamel flipped over {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts} for aces and deuces, winning the pot.

Nice One For Newey

Paul Newey opened for 600 under the gun only to have Steven Silverman three-bet to 1,800 from middle position. The rest of the field folded, Newey called, and it was heads-up action to the {K-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{5-Spades}. Newey proceeded to check-call a bet of 2,050, and then he fired out 5,600 on the {2-Hearts} turn.

Silverman called and then watched Newey bet 12,650 on the {9-Diamonds} river. Silverman thought for a long time, called, and then mucked when Newey rolled over {6-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for the nuts.

Jaffe Reenters; Picks Up a Pot

After being the first player to bust, Jared Jaffe sat down at a new table and opened to 525 from early position. Four people called, including Dani Stern and Cliff "Johnny Bax" Josephy, prompting someone to joke about Jaffe not getting respect.

"That's what happens when you're the first to bust," one player joked.

The flop fell {4-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{5-Spades}. Josephy led out for 1,600 from the small blind, the player in the big blind folded, and both Jaffe and Stern called. The turn was the {a-Clubs}, Josephy checked, and Jaffe fired 4,200.

Both Stern and Josephy folded.

Lemke Scores The First Double Of The Day

It didn't take long for the first double of the day, which came just 20 minutes into Level 1. That's quite the feat considering players start with a 50,000 starting stack and the blinds are just 100/200 with a 25 ante. Even so, Brian Lemke and Jonathan Jaffe managed to get it all in preflop.

Now you might expect to see two big hands in a spot like that, perhaps aces versus kings, but that wasn't exactly the case. Lemke, who was all in and at risk for 49,975, did in fact hold the {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}, but Jaffe held the mediocre {J-Clubs}{8-Spades}. We're not sure of the betting, but the fact remained the chips got in preflop.

The {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}{K-Hearts} flop gave Lemke hit a set, and the {6-Spades} turn left Jaffe drawing dead. The meaningless {5-Clubs} was put out on the river for good measure, and a rather calm Lemke raked in the pot. Meanwhile, Jaffe was left with just 2,700 and was eliminated a few hands later.

Pilgrim Takes A Small One From Peters

David Peters sat down at Table 5 and in his very first hand opted to raise to 525 from early position. The raise cleared the field all the way around to Dwyte Pilgrim in the small blind, he called, and the two saw a slop of {6-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{7-Spades}.

Pilgrim proceeded to check-call a bet of 800, and the both players checked the {9-Hearts} turn and {8-Diamonds} river. Pilgrim tabled the {8-Spades}{9-Spades} for two pair, and it was good as Peters gently flicked his cards to the muck.
