Mortensen Misses With Second Bullet

Carlos Mortensen on Day 1.
Carlos Mortensen on Day 1.

Carlos Mortensen busted early on Day 1, but he returned later that night to fire a second bullet. The 2001 World Series of Poker champion managed to make it through to Day 2, but that is where his tournament comes to an end.

It happened when he got his stack of 75,000 all in preflop holding {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} and was racing against the {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} of Ty Reiman. Mortensen needed to improve, but he failed to do so as the board ran out an uninspiring {9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}.

Schwartz Finds Kings

We're not sure of the preflop betting, but we do know that Noah Schwartz got his last 33,400 all in preflop holding {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} and was way ahead of Christian Harder's {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} in one of the last hands before the level went up. "Queens versus king," Schwartz narrated the action for his friends at other tables. "I've got the kings."

Those kings went on to hold up as the board ran out {2-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}.

More for Vlad

Vladimir Troyanovskiy and Jason Somerville were heads up on a board of {7-Spades}{j-Spades}{j-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}. Troyanovskiy led for 10,500, and Somerville called.

The {10-Diamonds} completed the board, and Troyanovskiy slowed down, checking to Somerville who fired 19,500. Troyanovskiy tank-called.

Somerville rolled over {a-Spades}{q-Spades} for a busted flush draw, and Troyanovskiy tabled two red sixes for a pair, winning the pot.

Watson Raises Harder Off On Turn

Mike Watson raised from the button to 5,500, and action folded over to Christian Harder in the big blind. He reraised to 14,400, and Watson called.

The flop came down {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}, and Harder led for 11,100. Watson called to see the {4-Clubs} land on the turn. Harder bet 28,000, and Watson put in a raise to 68,000. Harder folded, and Watson won the pot.

Charania Puts Haxton to the Test

When we reached the table, the board was already completed {a-Spades}{7-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}. There was about 80,000 in the middle, and Mohsin Charania had open-shoved on the river for effectively 120,000.

Isaac Haxton was in the tank, and while he was thinking, a fellow member of the media filled us in on the details. According to him, Charania led out for a bet on the flop, Haxton called, and then Charania check-raised on the turn. Again, Haxton called.

Fast forward back to the river, where Haxton was stillin the tank. Finally, he announced fold, and accidentally exposed {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} when tossing his cards into the muck.

Charania mucked his holdings facedown, and raked in the pot.

Raghavan Runs Queens Into King Dan

After Dani Stern had opened for 5,500 from under the gun and Dan Smith called, Ravi Raghavan moved all in for around 65,000. Stern quickly folded and Smith, who had about the same sized stack, snap-called with {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}. It was a bit of a cooler as Raghavan's {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} was crushed.

There'd be no suckout for Raghavan as the board ran out a dry {10-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{J-Hearts}, putting an end to his day.

Reiman Climbing

Ty Reiman checked to Brandon Steven with the board reading, {7-Spades}{k-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}. Steven fired 12,300, and Reiman called.

The {7-Hearts} completed the board, and Reiman checked again. Steven knuckled behind, then mucked when Reiman showed {k-Spades}{10-Diamonds} for a pair of kings.

Gruissem Loses The Max

Philipp Gruissem shoved all in holding {A-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and received a call from Max Silver, who held {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs} on the button. Gruissem needed some big-time help, but he'd find none on the {K-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} flop. The {Q-Spades} turn gave Gruissem some added chop outs to a king, but the {3-Spades} river was not what he needed and he was eliminated from the tournament.
