Calderaro Stacks Luca

Level 9 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Ivan Luca
Ivan Luca

There were about 18,000 chips already in the pot and the board read {J-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{4-Spades} when we got to the table. Ivan Luca had already committed 13,000 from the small blind and was facing a decision for a total of 30,000 from James Calderaro, who was in the big blind. Luca called.

The turn brought the {8-Hearts} and Luca bet 4,000. Calderaro shoved and Luca called for about 25,000 total to put himself at risk.

Luca: {K-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Calderaro: {8-Clubs}{6-Clubs}

Both players had flopped flush draws, and although Luca's was better, Calderaro had the lead with a pair of eights. The {8-Spades} on the river further improved Calderaro to trips, so he took the pot to stack Luca.

Petrangelo Races Against Riess

Level 9 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Nick Petrangelo
Nick Petrangelo

Richard Seymour opened to 4,000 on the button then Ryan Riess three-bet out of the small blind making it 13,800. Nick Petrangelo four-bet to 37,000 in the big blind and Seymour quickly folded. Riess five-bet jammed for around 100,000 and Petrangelo called.

Riess: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}
Petrangelo: {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

A race for Riess' tournament life was underway and the dealer delivered a {4-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{a-Spades}{j-Clubs}. One ace was enough to get the job done and Riess was sent to the rail for the second time.

Play has entered the 10th and final level of the night. As the clock winds down on Day 1 the tournament staff will pause the remainder and draw for how many hands each table will play before the remaining players bag their chips for the night.

Action will resume at noon local time on Saturday where another 10 levels are on the schedule.

Machon Spikes an Ace to Double Up

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

After a series of preflop raises, Bartlomiej Machon and Almedin Imsirovic got all of their chips in the middle with Machon being the player at risk for 75,700. Imsirovic was well ahead with {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} against Machon's {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}.

However, the flop fell {a-Spades}{8-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Machon spiked an ace on the flop to leave Imsirovic drawing to a single king left in the deck. The {2-Spades} and the {4-Clubs} completed the board and Machon scored a big double up in the last level of the night.

Petrangelo Keeps Climbing

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

Action folded around to Anthony Zinno in the cutoff and he raised to 5,500. Nick Petrangelo called from the big blind.

The flop came {K-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Spades} and Petrangelo checked. Zinno bet 6,000 and Petrangelo called.

The turn brought the {7-Clubs} and both players checked.

The {A-Hearts} fell on the river and Petrangelo bet 15,000. With just a few seconds remaining on the shot clock, Zinno called. Petrangelo tabled {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts} and his pair of kings was good enough to win the pot, which put his stack over the 400,000-chip mark.

Koon Gets Value

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

There were about 16,000 chips already in the middle and the board read {J-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} when we got to the table. Mike Watson bet 7,500 from the small blind, Joao Simao folded from the big blind, and Jason Koon called from the cutoff.

The turn brought the {8-Hearts} and both players checked.

The {A-Spades} fell on the river and Watson checked. Koon wordlessly tossed out a single T-25,000 chip, and with less than 10 seconds remaining on the shot clock, Watson called. Koon tabled {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts} for a rivered pair of aces, Watson mucked, and Koon took the pot.

Sontheimer Wisely Checks the River

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

Igor Kurganov raised to 4,500 from early position and Steffen Sontheimer came along for the ride on the button. The flop came {7-Clubs}{6-Spades}{5-Hearts} and Kurganov continued for 7,000. Sontheimer called and the {3-Hearts} rolled off on the turn.

Kurganov fired another 14,000, only to have Sontheimer raise to 41,000. Kurganov called and the {7-Diamonds} paired the board on the river. Kurganov quickly checked and Sontheimer instantly snapped his fingers to signal a check as well. Kurganov tabled {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs} for a full house and Sontheimer just laughed as he mucked his cards.
