Day 1 of the 2018 Poker King Cup Macau HK$80,000 High Roller is in the books after nine levels of play. In total, 54 entries were collected over the day and 36 of them managed to find a bag to tag at the end. Taking the overnight chip lead is Duan Chao from China with 181,500 in chips.

Chao has just over $90,000 in recorded lifetime tournament winnings and will be looking to add a chunk to that tomorrow, right here at the Venetian Macau Resort & Hotel. But it won’t be easy. There are still some more players in contention for that title and trophy tomorrow. Trailing in second place in the chip counts is Mingqin Liu with 160,300. And closing the podium for today is another Chinese player, Xiaqing Ji with 137,600 in chips.

Some other notable names in the running include Ziang Zhu (106,000), Sergio Aido (95,200), Tony Chang (94,900), Peter Chan (80,400), and Ye Wang (77,700), and all have bagged an above average stack to start Day 2 with. Players like Aaron Lim (52,500), Mark Hammond (37,000), Phachara Wongwichit (26,900), and Preston Lee (14,900) have got some work to do with their stacks.

Defending champion Chung Yuan Yu had to use two bullets to make it through to Day 2 and takes 40,700 with him. 2017 Runner-up Phanlert Sukonthachartnant managed to double up in the last hand of the day and scraped through with 28,800 in the end.

Play will continue tomorrow, Friday 21 September, at 2pm local time with Level 10, featuring a small blind of 800, big blind of 1,600 and running ante of 200. The late registration and reentry period will still be open then and remain open until the start of Level 13 which should be around 3.10pm local time. Blinds will continue to be 40-minutes each and a 10-minute break should take place after every 3 levels. There is no dinner break scheduled but could be planned in at the tournament director’s discretion.

Make sure to come back to see who will be crowned the PKC High Roller Champion tomorrow as the PokerNews live reporting team will be there from start till end.

The defending Champion, Chung Yuan Yu was seen standing up at his table, taking a photo of the board. Yu had gone all-in from the big blind for about 8,000 and was called by Qing Zhao in early position.

Chung Yuan Yu: {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}
Qing Zhao: {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

The board ran out {9-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{a-Spades}{8-Hearts} to give Zhao quad nines on the flop to eliminate Yu from the tournament. Yu still has time to reenter as the registration period is open until the end of Level 12 which is until approximately 3 PM local time.

Fasano Doubles Through Yu

Level 6 : 300/600, 75 ante
William Fasano
William Fasano

The board read {9-Spades}{q-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts} with about 20,000 in the middle. William Fasano had the all-in button in front of him while he was sitting in the small blind. Both Quan Zhou (cutoff) and Chung Yuan Yu (button) both had a bet of 12,800 in front of them. Fasano was all-in for 29,125 in total. Zhou considered it for a while but opted to fold. Yu called.

William Fasano: {4-}{4-Diamonds}
Chung Yuan Yu: {J-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Fasano had flopped a set of fours and Yu flopped a straight draw.

The river completed the board with the {Q-Spades} to further improve Fasano's set to a full house for the double-up, leaving the defending champ behind with around 6,000 in chips.

Gu Hits Turn, Chao Takes From Gao

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Duan Chao
Duan Chao

The sole Macanese player in the field, Hui Dong Gu, has recently won a small pot from tablemate Ye Wang. It was Gu who was the instigator, making it 1,050 with a chuckle when the action folded around to him on the button.

Wang elected to defend from the big blind and threw in the call to take action heads-up to a monochrome flop of {5-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. Both players seemed a little gun shy and checked, leaving the dealer to burn and turn the {9-Spades}.

Wang checked once more, opening the door for Gu to take a stab for 1,300, which Wang called after a short visit to the think tank.

The {5-Clubs} river paired the board and there was no more betting. Wang tabled {q-Hearts}{10-Clubs} but this was not enough to beat Gu's turned two pair with {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts} leaving the Macanese player to rake in the pot and climb to 51,100 while Wang dropped back down to starting stack.

We caught the tail end of a sizable pot that played out on the next table over immediately after this, arriving in time to see Wenling Gao put Duan Chao to the test.

The community cards were spread {2-Clubs}{a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and there was just over 23,000 in chips in the pot when Gao fired out a bet of 14,000 from the hijack.

Chao was the man in position and seemed reluctant to make the call. Eventually, tablemate Dongzhe Yang called for a clock and there were just seconds to spare before Chao grudgingly slid in the call.

Gao flipped over {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for a missed backdoor flush draw and gutshot straight draw but a rivered pair of tens. However, this was not enough to beat Chao's rivered Broadway straight with {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} and he pulled in a decent sized pot to climb to 71,000 while Gao took a hit and is now short on 10,700.

The board read {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and there was around 11,000 in the middle already. Yilu Yuan checked from under the gun and Preston lee bet 5,000 which Yuan called.

The {a-Diamonds} on the river completed the board and Yuan checked for the last time. Lee looked at Yuan's stack and put him all-in. Yuan snap-called for his last 10,750. Lee flipped over {a-Spades}{k-Clubs} for two pair, aces and tens with the king-kicker. Yuan got up from his seat and left the table. The dealer turned around [ahjc[ for Yuan to show Yuan's cards and it was an all-in situation and cards had to be shown.

Chan Ousts Cheng to Seize Early Lead

Level 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Peter Chan
Peter Chan

Yue Peng Cheng has become the first official high rolling casualty, falling at the hands of Hong Kong's Peter Chan, who has edged into an early lead.

The hand was an interesting multi-way affair, at least at first, with Chan opening the action to 800 from the hijack and picking up three callers, with Yue Peng Cheng (cutoff), Mingqin Liu (button) and Yuan Li (big blind) all coming along for the ride to take the action four-way to a flop of {k-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{7-Hearts}.

After Li checked from the big blind Chan was not deterred with all those customers and led for 1,300. Cheng and Liu both made the call before Li popped it up to 4,800 with a check-raise. Chan showed a great deal of strength and raised once more, making it 11,000 to go in total and Yue Peng Cheng then decided to move all-in for 19,500 in total.

The rest of the table seemed a little taken aback at all the action and all bowed out, with the exception of Chan, who made the call to put Cheng at risk.

Peter Chan: {a-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Yue Peng Cheng: {j-Spades}{10-Spades}

Cheng was the man whose tournament life was on the line, and his jack-high open-ended straight draw was trailing to Chan's ace-high gutshot draw. The {q-Spades} changed nothing and the {7-Spades} river completed the hand, and Cheng's first buy-in in this tournament as the Chinese player became the first official casualty, which Chan stacked up to 101,000 to take the chip lead.
