Zirkle Picks One Up Before Dinner

Level 12 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

A player in early position opened to 6,500 and was called by Tom Zirkle in the big blind.

Zirkle checked to the initial raiser on a flop of {9-Hearts}{j-Spades}{6-Diamonds} before calling his opponent's 6,000 continuation.

The {k-Diamonds} turn saw Zirkle check again and then make the call once more after the early position player fired off a second bet of 12,000.

Both players checked once the {7-Clubs} completed the board with Zirkle showing down {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}, sufficient to scoop the pot just a few minutes before the tournament breaks for dinner.

Galfond Challenge
Galfond Challenge

The Galfond Challenge, a heads-up online pot-limit Omaha competition between Phil Galfond and an opponent, is back starting Feb. 2 with Dan "Jungleman" Cates stepping into the hot seat.

Play will begin at 8 a.m. PT and is expected to run until around noon each day Monday through Thursday until the agreed upon 7,500 hands are completed, according to Galfond's Monday afternoon tweet. Galfond told PokerNews the action will take place on WSOP.com. In previous Galfond Challenges, there's been a side bet attached to the cash game, but the former Full Tilt Poker crusher said he isn't sure yet if a side bet will be added to this one.

Each session, and every hand, is expected to be live-streamed on Galfond's YouTube channel, but the PLO pro said there won't be any commentary. As is customary in the Galfond Challenge, the competitors will play two tables at a time of PLO at $100/$200 stakes.

Einsidler Navigates Multiway Pot

Level 11 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

A player limped from under the gun as did John "moneymetalcakes" Auville one seat over, a player in middle position and Izzy Einsidler in the small blind. The big blind checked his option to send action five-way to the flop.

The small blind, Einsidler, the under the gun player and Auville all checked following the {9-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{q-Hearts} flop. The middle position player then led out for 6,000, receiving calls from Einsidler and the under the gun player while everyone else folded.

All three players checked through the {9-Spades} turn to the {7-Diamonds} river at which point Einsidler pushed 10,000 into the middle, enough to force folds from both of his opponents.

Mitich Ascending

Level 11 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

Jacob Mitich opened to 4,500 from early position and received calls from Lara Eisenberg on the button as well as the big blind.

The big blind checked to Mitich on a flop of {9-Spades}{7-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} and he continued for 3,000. Eisenberg decided to come along while the big blind folded to send action heads-up to the turn.

Mitich did not slow down following the {k-Hearts} turn, instead firing a second barrel of 16,000. That bet was enough to convince Eisenberg her holding was no good as she tossed her cards into the muck.

Burnett Talks Himself Into a Fold

Level 10 : Blinds 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Yaser Al-Keliddar
Yaser Al-Keliddar

Picking up the action on the turn with the board reading {k-Spades}{6-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} Steve Burnett in early position was involved in a hand with Yaser Al-Keliddar in late position. According to the table, the two players had some playing history with one another.

Burnett checked to Al-Keliddar and he moved all in for 83,500. That sent Burnett deep into the tank as he appeared to go over their history with one another in an attempt to get a better read on his opponent's range. 'I'm running through all of his hands back at the Borgata' joked Burnett as he counted out his own stack. 'We played for four and a half hours' he continued, not yet committing to a call or fold. Finally he tossed his hand away, saying 'got to the forty fourth hand ...needed to get to the fifty fifth to call' as the pot was pushed towards Al-Keliddar.

Wu Applies Pressure

Level 10 : Blinds 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

Mohammed-Ali Tadjer limped from late position as did Xiaohai Wu out of the small blind. The big blind checked his option to send action three-way to the flop.

Both blinds checked to Tadjer on a flop of {3-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and he bet out 3,000. Wu responded by raising to 12,000, forcing the big blind out of the hand. Tadjer pondered for some time before mucking his hand to keep Wu chipping up.

Matei Scores Elimination

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Picking up the action on a flop of {4-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} Dan Matei in the big blind had his opponent from under the gun all in and at risk.

Under The Gun Player: {a-}{j-}
Dan Matei: {j-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

The at risk player held a commanding lead, that is until the {9-Spades} rolled off the deck on the turn to leave him needing the help of Barry Greenstein to survive. It was not to be, however, as the {q-Hearts} completed the board to hand Matei the elimination and the pot.
