The Strategic Sacrifice: Capps Bags Lead After Giving Up Stack

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Jesse Capps

For this year's Run It Up Reno $565 Main Event, tournament organizers wanted to give players a third and final chance to participate in Sunday's Day 2. So, they fired up a turbo Day 1c flight with 15 minute levels.

Last year's runner-up, Jesse Capps, was having a miserable Main Event but turned it around at literally the last possible second. With the last 30 seconds expiring from the break before registration ended, Capps had about 2,000 chips with blinds set to move to 600/1,200/200. He urgently flagged down the tournament director and forfeited his stack, buying in as the 38th and final player in the flight.

Capps proceeded to run his 25,000 up to 119,000 in the last hour, good for the chip lead among the 22 players who made it through.

First, Capps fired all in for 9,500 into a 31,000 pot on a board of {5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{q-Spades} out of the big blind. A player in middle position snap-called with {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}, but Capps had {6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} for the nut straight. He faded the river diamond and doubled through. Next, Capps three-bet from the button after a player opened the cutoff, and {3-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flopped. The player in the cutoff check-called all in for well over pot with {7-Hearts}{5-Hearts} but missed his draw against Capps' {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}. Capps dragged a third hefty pot when he called a shove by a short-stacked player with {a-Clubs}{4-Spades} and won against {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs} by flopping an ace.

Others who made it through included Marty Gorenc (57,800), Kevin Barrett (33,200), and former PokerStars The Big Game participant Nadya Magnus (24,100).

The players who made it through will be back for Day 2 Sunday at noon, and PokerNews will again be on hand for live coverage.

"I Thought You Were Shoving Light"

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

A player under the gun moved all in for 14,500, and Jesse Capps called in middle position. The first player showed {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}.

"You're way ahead," Capps said, turning up only the {a-Clubs}. "I thought you were shoving light."

The dealer flipped over Capps' other card: {4-Spades}.

The {a-Clubs} was all Capps needed though as the community cards came {7-Spades}{3-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{5-Spades}.

Buzzed Down

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Buzz Carter shoved the last 11,400 in from the big blind over a cutoff open. The opener called with {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and was pleased to see Carter had an underpair: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}.

The first four cards came {4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{q-Spades}, and Carter was fading quite a bit on the river.

"Brick," he instructed the dealer to bring forth, but it was a {j-Hearts} to give his opponent a flush.

Capps Surging

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

Jesse Capps' decision to surrender his stack is looking like a good one. He just busted another opponent, this time after the cutoff opened for a raise and called a three-bet to 3,500 from Capps, who was on the button. The flop came {3-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}, and Capps put his opponent all in for about 20,000 after the player checked.

"I've gotta call," the player said, pushing his stack in and flipping {7-Hearts}{5-Hearts} for a combo draw and overs.

Only the draws were good as Capps held {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}, and two bricks fell to send him the pot.

Doubles for Capps, Gorenc

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

Jesse Capps moved all in for 9,500 under the gun into a bloated pot of 31,000 out of the big blind. The board read {5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{q-Spades}, and Capps' opponent in middle position snap-called with {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}. Capps held {6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} for the nut straight and needed to fade a diamond. The river brought a black card, the {8-Spades}, and Capps doubled.

At the same table, Marty Gorenc said he doubled up when his {3-}{3-} won against {a-}{k-}.
