$565 Main Event

Day 1a Completed

Day 1a of Run It Up Reno Main Event Concludes with Gary Kochalka Leading

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Day 1a of the 2016 Run It Up Reno Main Event came to a conclusion on Friday with Gary Kochalka leading the remaining 63 players surviving into Day 2 on Sunday.

Friday saw the first of three flights grace the Peppermill Resort Hotel and 196 entries were tallied throughout the day to set the path of crushing the $150,000 guarantee. In terms of that guarantee, only an additional 104 players will be needed over the next two flights to eclipse it, plus beat the prize pool of last year when the event was held in October and generated $159,000.

Defending champion Nick Aguilera led the field into Day 1a, along with Survivor contestants Rob Cesternino, Tyson Apostol, and Anna Khait. Seasoned veterans Steve Brecher, Randy Lew, Leo Wolpert, and Run It Up Reno host Jason Somerville all played, and the latter three were forced to reenter.

Previous event winners Steve Nevius, Thomas Dominguez, and Kevin Martin also took seats, as well as a plethora of Run it Up warriors, local amateurs, and satellite winners.

Chips passed freely around each table as the rate of eliminations was constant until the conclusion of play. Several players, such as Alex Lavinthal, Chad Holloway, Zhihao Zhang, Bill Casey, and Kevin Gerhart, all flirted with the chip lead, but it wouldn't be until that final level of the day where three players soared to the top of the leaderboard.

First, Rob Paul soared over 250,000 when he rivered a full house against two players. Then it was Reuben Moss doubling up while eliminating Khait to climb to over 200,000. However, on the final hand of the night it was Gary Kochalka calling a button shove with the {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} to win a race against the {3-Clubs}{3-Spades}.

Once the dust settled, Kochalka would be nestled on top of the leaderboard with 246,100, ahead of Paul's 242,000 and Moss' 210,900. Rounding out the next few chip counts would be Casey (147,200), Chris Corbo (133,700), Zhang (133,000), and Andy Peplinski (127,300).

Also amongst the survivors were Holloway, Lew, Martin, Jaime Staples, and defending champion Aguilera.

Day 2 for the Day 1a survivors will be on Sunday at 12 p.m. local time with PokerNews providing continuous coverage until the Run It Up Reno Main Event champion is crowned. Will it be Aguilera defending his title? Will a big name take it down? Stay tuned to find out!

End-of-Day Chip Counts (full)

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

One Final One for Kochalka

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

On the last hand of the night at his table, small blind Gary Kochalka called the all-in shove of a player on the button who had about 50,000. Kochalka held the {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts} and the player on the button had the {3-Clubs}{3-Spades}. The {j-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} flop left Kochalka calling for a king, and after the {5-Spades} hit the turn to give him even more outs, that's exactly what the dealer delivered in the form of a {k-Clubs}.

Khait KO'd

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Anna Khait
Anna Khait

Following a raise to 4,800, Reuben Moss three-bet next to speak to 11,100. Anna Khait then responded by moving all in for roughly 16,000 with the initial raiser flat-calling.

Moss then tried to re-raise but was bound to just a call as the flop was spread {3-Spades}{7-Hearts}{6-Clubs} and he shoved all in for roughly 75,000 with his opponent check-calling the all-in.

Khait: {A-}{Q-}
Moss: {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}
Opponent: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}

The turn and river landed the {10-Clubs} and {3-Clubs} to see Khait eliminated and Moss double to over 200,000 while leaving his opponent crippled with roughly 4,000 in chips.

Paul Surges to Lead

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Three players saw a {j-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{j-Spades} flop, and a player in middle position bet 2,300. Brandon King shoved all in from the next spot for about 30,000. Big blind Rob Paul announced he was all in as well, and the original bettor called off for around 50,000.

Paul: {j-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}
Middle position: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}
King: {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

King held the lead since he had Paul outkicked, but after a {2-Clubs} hit the felt, the {4-Clubs} arrived to give Paul jacks full. He appears to be locked in as the chip leader barring a late disaster.

Final Five Hands

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

The clock has been paused with 10 minutes remaining and each table has been instructed to play just five more hands before calling it a night.

Gerhart Doubles with Straight

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

The action folded to Kevin Gerhart in the cutoff and he raised to 3,500 with both blinds calling.

The flop of {Q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} was checked through to see the {8-Spades} land on the turn and the big blind bet out 5,000. Gerhart called before the small blind check-raised to 17,000.

The big blind folded, but Gerhart moved all in for 30,200 with the small blind calling.

Gerhart: {J-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Opponent: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}

The river landed the {8-Hearts} and Gerhart doubled to 77,500 with his turned straight.

Zhang's Top Pair Good

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Zhihao Zhang was in the cutoff and bet 5,500 on a {7-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{2-Hearts} flop, and his opponent on the button called. Zhang check-called 8,600 on the {5-Spades} turn and 14,100 on the {8-Hearts} river, and his {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} was best against {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}.

Holloway's Kings Outdrawn

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Chad Holloway had an opponent all in preflop for his last 16,400.

Holloway: {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}
Opponent: {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}

With Holloway in great shape to build on his already impressive chip stack, the {5-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds} flop changed little until the {8-Diamonds} landed on the turn.

With Holloway trailing, any king or diamond (minus the {5-Diamonds}) would see him scoop the pot, but unfortunately it would be the {6-Spades} and Holloway would double his opponent while dropping to 90,000 in chips.
