PokerNews Podcast Special: Shaun Deeb Talks $800K Body Fat Prop Buyout & 2024 WSOP Schedule

Level 12 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

On this special episode of the PokerNews Podcast sponsored by 888poker, Chad Holloway goes one-on-one with Shaun Deeb, who accepted a $800,000 buyout in his $1 million body fat prop bet against Bill Perkins.

Nearly 11 months ago, the poker players agreed to a 14-month wager on Deeb's ability to bring his body fat composition down significantly. The bet had essentially no stipulations — either get to 17% body fat by the start of the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP), or lose $100,000.

Last month, Deeb gave his X followers an update on his progress, and it was certainly positive in his favor. A January 25 Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan showed his body fat had dropped to 23.9% with still four months to go. That caused Perkins to begin proposing potential buyout possibilities on X, although nothing had been officially agreed upon.

Shaun Deeb Accepts Buyout in $1 Million Body Fat Loss Prop Bet

On Friday, he went in for another DEXA scan, and he was in even better shape — 22.0% body fat composition. Then, on Saturday, the future Poker Hall of Famer informed his social media followers that Perkins had bought out of the bet for $800,000 just over three months from the start of the 2024 WSOP.

Deeb shared all the details of his journey, why he opted to accept the buyout, and where he plans to go from here. Plus, hear his thoughts on the 2024 WSOP schedule.

Kohlberg Doubles with the Eight-Four

Level 12 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Curt Kohlberg
Curt Kohlberg

After an open from Ronda Vankrey, Curt Kohlberg shoved all in for 30,000, which Vankrey quickly called to put him at risk.

"Oh sh*t," Kohlberg sighed as he flipped over 84 and was up against the A6 of Vankrey.

The board on the turn read J38A with Vankrey as a big favorite with a pair of aces, but the river came down the 8 to give Kohlberg trip eights and he was awarded the pot, along with some playful comments from the table.

Spade for McClay

Level 12 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Michael McClay moved all in preflop and was called by big stack Michael Briggs to put his tournament life on the line.

Michael McClay: AJ
Michael Briggs: AQ

"Ok, I just need a jack or some spades!" McClay proclaimed, and the dealer seemed to listen as the flop came out 783 to give him a flush draw.

The turn gave him exactly what he needed with the Q to lock up the hand for him with the nut flush while the river Q just added insult to injury for Briggs.

McClay jumped up and gave the table a good show as the pot was pushed over to him for the double.

Leese Sits Back Down

Level 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

After some preflop back-and-forth, David Leese had made it 25,00o and then his opponent moved all in, covering him.

Leese then went into the tank as he had around 50,000 behind in his stack, around 25 big blinds. After close to a minute, he sighed and made the call, putting himself at risk.

David Leese: AQ
Opponent: AK

Leese was in bad shape with his inferior ace, and the flop and turn 52107 weren't much help. He did pick up some equity when he stood up and gathered his things, and it seemed to work as the river was the miracleQ to keep him alive.

"Where are you going? Sit back down!" another player joked as Leese returned to his seat as his opponent slammed the table in disgust while a large portion of his stack was siphoned off and given to Leese.
