Life Outside Poker: Eugene Katchalov Returns to Both Ukraine and Poker

Life Outside Poker is a new podcast for PokerNews hosted by Connor Richards that seeks to pull back the curtain on poker players and allow viewers and listeners to get to know them on a personal level.

In the 19th episode, Connor speaks with former poker pro Eugene Katchalov, one of Ukraine's all-time money leaders who fled the country in 2022 after Russia's invasion and has since returned to the war-torn region with his family.

Katchalov, a former PokerStars ambassador, talked about growing up in New York City, his poker glory days and 2007 Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic victory for $2.5 million, returning to Ukraine and misconceptions about the longstanding conflict with Russia. He also discussed his venture into esports and new plans to get back into poker with a project aimed at leveling the playing field between pros and recreationals.

A player opened to 3,000 preflop and was called in four spots to see a mutli-way flop of K♠4♥8♠.

The action checked to the initial raiser who continued for 6,000 and was called by Gabriel Jarrous, but when the action got back to Brodie Ritchliln, he check-raised to 20,000.

The action quickly folded back to Jarrous who then moved all in for more, which Ritchilin called and tabled K♥4♠.

"You play that trash?" Jarrous joked as he flipped over K♣4♣ for the exact same hand. The runout then completed with 9♦Q♠ and the two players chopped up the pot.

On a multi-way flop of 4♦7♦9♥, all the chips between Jamie Teal, Gabriel Jarrous, and another play found its way into the middle, with Jarrous covering.

"I just need one card!' Jarrous announced, "Deuce of diamonds!"

"Four-four!" Teal shouted, but unfortunately for him and the other player at risk, the turn immediately brought in the 9♦ to give Jarrous the flush.

Only a jack or a nine on the river would save Teal with a full house, but it was the 2♦ that Jarrous wished for to score him the big pot while Tea and the other player hit the rail.

Berman Gets There, Mogilnicki Finishes the Job

On a heads-up flop of J♠3♦9♣, David Berman and another player got all of their chips into the middle, with Berman at risk.

Opponent: Q♣Q♥

Berman would need some help to stay alive, and he sure got it as the turn came the K♦ to give him the lead and the river was the blank 7♠ to award him the pot.

Left short, his opponent then moved all in the very next hand with eight-nine offsuit and was called by Edward Mogilnicki who ironically held pocket queens. The at-risk player failed to find any help from the board and he was eliminated while Mogilnicki raked in the pot.

Makdessi would need to hold with his tens to stay alive, but the flop of 8♣J♦K♠ immediately provided Bibi with a king and the runout of A♣4♣ only improved him to two pair to eliminate Makdessi.
