Will Wilson on the Rise in the San Diego Poker Scene

Level 24 : Blinds 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante
William Wilson
William Wilson

Everyone has a specific niche that they can specialize in but sometimes it takes time to find out what it is...and sometimes that time never comes. Luckily for Will Wilson, a San Diego, California native, he stumbled upon the game of poker just a short two years ago.

Was it everything he expected at first? Maybe not. But it was something he was interested in and decided to pursue the game of skill and chance a little further. "It all started at the $10 home games. My friend had the great idea to go to Las Vegas and I didn't know game theory or anything. I lost several thousand, but something flicked in me. I was kind of like, "I like this game". So I studied and went from there."

Over the past two years of mostly just playing No-Limit Hold'em tournaments, Wilson has amassed over $67,000 in winnings according to The Hendon Mob. Most, if not all of that, has come from the Southern California poker scene where he calls home. Wilson has two tournament wins under his belt and a career-high score of $26,120 for finishing ninth in the $600 Mega Millions held at Bell Garden in Los Angeles.

In order to become successful in poker, you certainly need some gut instincts, but surrounding yourself with the right people and coaches can dramatically improve your game in a hurry. "I recently did the Hungry Horse boot camp and that helped me with some thought processes but now I want more." Wilson mentioned that he just recently started getting some personal coaching from AlvinTeachesPoker, a widely known poker coach who is known for working with Wolfgang Poker.

When asked if there was one thing that he strives to achieve in this game of poker, Wilson had a pretty typical answer. "I definitely want a WSOP bracelet. I think that's every poker player's dream. I really want to play the WSOP Main Event too. But realistically, I want to be able to have a full-time income because right now, it's just part-time. Last year was a good start, so we'll see if we can keep it going."

Wilson will be making his way to Las Vegas in less than a month to hopefully live out those dreams of possibly winning a prestigious gold bracelet. Hotels are booked, the schedule is planned, and there is only one thing left to do. Wilson will be taking part in plenty of the WSOP festivities over the first couple of weeks of the summer and then reevaluate the situation pending results.

Finally, Wilson was more than happy to give a shoutout to the local poker scene in San Diego, where he's made plenty of friends at the felt. "The people are really cool, very friendly. After going to LA, Vegas, and Texas, the poker community there is much bigger. So I would like to see more players here, but the community here is very sweet, cool, and fun to play with."

Wilson was just eliminated in 21st place for $1,432 prior to sitting down with PokerNews at the Jamul Poker Open. However, if you're keeping an eye on up-and-comers in the poker scene, Will Wilson will be one you won't forget!

Di Wu opened to 60,000 from under the gun and Zhehao Jin moved all in for 135,000 on his left. Prakhar Jain flat-called from the cutoff and Wu tagged along as well. The flop came AQ7 and Jain threw in a bet of 85,000 which forced Wu to fold. The two remaining hands were tabled for the main pot.

Zhehao Jin: 55All in
Prakhar Jain: AQ

Jain flopped two pair and had Jin down to just two outs. The J on the turn was not one of them but the 5 on the river was, sparking a big reaction from Jin who stayed alive.

Furmanek Makes Big Slick Work

Level 24 : Blinds 15,000/30,000, 30,000 ante

Matthew Gawel opened to 60,000 in middle position with 1010 and Zhehao Jin shipped all in for 645,000 in the hijack. Joseph Furmanek woke up with a premium on the button and also moved all in for 510,000. The action folded back to Gawel who decided to send the best hand into the muck.

Joseph Furmanek: AKAll in
Zhehao Jin: 77

It turned out to be a coin flip and the flop of J95 left Jin in the lead. The 10 on the turn made things interesting and it was the Q on the river that gave Furmanek a straight. Jin passed over the chips and was left with just a few big blinds.

Behr Finds Gin on the Turn

Level 23 : Blinds 15,000/25,000, 25,000 ante

Aiden Behr limped in from the small blind and Matthew Gawel raised to 75,000 in the big blind. Behr just called and they saw a flop of K76. Gawel continued with a bet of 50,000 and Behr check-raised to 175,000. Gawel called and the 4 peeled off on the turn.

Behr counted out another bet of 200,000 and Gawel instantly called. The river was the 5 which slowed the action as both players checked. Behr flipped over 44 for a set of fours and Gawel conceded the pot.
