Family Competition and Faith

Level 12 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Team Tag Winners Dan Overholt (left) & Steve Sawyer (right)
Team Tag Winners Dan Overholt (left) & Steve Sawyer (right)

Steven Sawyer was one half of the winning duo of the RGPS Golden Expedition Hard Rock Tulsa $300 Tag Team event as he and Dan Overholt took home the RunGood title.

“Danny (Overholt) and I are close friends. He called me up and asked me to play,” said Sawyer. “I was trying to go for a chop. And then finally I decided, let’s take this sucker down.”

For Sawyer, playing games and being competitive is in his family blood. Sawyer shared with PokerNews that his father taught him to play poker and chess when he was younger. These two games stayed in the family, as Sawyer has since passed that competitive play to his children. Sawyer, father of 11 children, expects a 16th grandchild soon. The family has since added pickleball to their repertoire as the Sawyer family competition continues to grow.

“We’re highly competitive,” said Sawyer. “Poker has been a very long-running game in our family along with chess.”

Sawyer’s passion has even passed down to his daughter Rachel Rodgers. Rachel, then Rachel Sawyer, managed to capture a WSOP ring when she won the $300 No-Limit Hold’em Six-Handed event for $10,669.

For Sawyer, playing poker and immersing himself in competitive games is more than just a family legacy; it also gives him a chance to express his faith. Sawyer can be seen wearing his “Trust Jesus” shirt when he won the tag team event earlier this week.

Sawyer shared that his faith has grown to be a big part of his life. Along with t-shirts, Sawyer also pays to put up banners and billboards expressing his faith and shared that poker helps fund these projects.

Sawyer, along with his daughter Rachel and son-in-law Caleb, will sit down on Day 1d.
