Stephen Song opened to 6,500 on the button holding 6♥6♦ and was called by Patrik Demus on the button with K♦J♣. Christopher Park then squeezed to 32,000 from the small blind with 10♦10♣ and Song called.
Demus check-called a 50,000 bet from Song on the 5♠A♦K♣ flop, but check-folded the best hand facing a 140,000 barrel from Song on the 4♦ turn.
Players have been sent on a 15-minute break.
Gary Thompson opened to 6,000 from the hijack and it was folded to Dan Cates, who said, "I'm gonna have to put you to the test," before three-betting to 21,000 from the small blind. Thompson called.
"I put you on a range," Cates said.
Both players checked on the 2♣A♣Q♦ flop and Cates checked again on the Q♣ turn.
"That queen hits you. I bet you're a ladies man," Cates continued.
Thompson then bet 28,000 and Cates called.
The 6♥ completed the board and both players went back to checking.
"Dammit! I have a flush!" Cates said as he turned over K♣5♣ as advertised. Thompson sent his hand into the muck and Cates was sent the pot.
Bin Leng raised to 6,500 with the 7♦6♦ and was called by Patrik Demus in the small blind holding the J♣10♣, Calvin Lee came along with the 4♥4♣ from the big blind. The 10♦8♣7♣ flop was checked to Leng who bet 18,000, earning a call from Demus only.
Following the 5♣ turn, Demus hit a flush and checked to Leng who then bet another 27,500 with his pair and up-and-down straight draw. Demus only called prior to the 9♦ river on which he checked again. Leng used a time bank extension before firing 68,000 and getting snapped off by Demus.
Over on the outer table, the two short stacks got their chips into the middle with near even stack sizes.
Nevan Chang: 10♠10♦
James Mendoza: A♠K♥
The A♣8♥6♠ flop instantly vaulted James Mendoza into the lead and Nevan Chang needed to catch a ten or running cards for a straight. One of the possible options came with the Q♠ turn but the 3♦ river brought no help for Chang, who was covered by a mere big blind and change.
The outer table saw a battle of the blinds between Taylor Black and Gavin on which the former checked the A♦6♦5♣ flop and then called a bet of 5,000. After the 4♠ turn, Black check-called for 11,000 and they opted to check the 5♠ on the river.
Black revealed A♠8♠ and won the pot, shortly before Dan "Jungleman" Cates entered the tournament next to them.
Calvin Lee opened to 6,000 first to act with J♠J♦ and was called by Bin Leng in the small blind with A♦J♥. Yisha Chen then squeezed to 25,000 from the big blind holding A♥5♥. Both Lee and Leng called
The flop came Q♥6♦A♠ and Leng checked to Chen, who continued for 15,000. Lee let his jacks go and Leng called.
Leng again checked on the Q♠ turn and Chen bet 25,000. Leng raised to 180,000 and Chen called.
The 4♠ completed the board and Leng bet 38,500. Chen looked him up and he tabled the best hand to claim the large pot.
Over on the outer table, a preflop clicking war unfolded and Taylor Black four-bet to 42,000. Soon after that, the chips went in against Marius Gierse with the latter at risk in the following duel of premium pocket pairs.
Marius Gierse: K♣K♠
Taylor Black: Q♠Q♥
The Q♠J♦8♥ flop improved Black to a set of queens while the 9♥ turn gave Gierse four additional outs to survive. None of them came on the A♣ river and the stacks were briefly counted.
"I have two sixty, you cover," Gierse said and quickly headed out of the tournament area.
Gavin and Marius Gierse were heads-up on a flop of 5♣J♣9♠ in a raised pot. Gavin check-called an 8,000 bet from Gierse and then a 29,000 bet from Gierse on the 5♠ turn.
The A♥ completed the board and Gavin checked a final time. Gierse announced a bet of 80,000 and Gavin quickly let his hand go.
Three players limped in and Gavin then raised to 20,000 from the big blind. Dominik Nitsche in the hijack and Gary Thompson called on the button as they headed to the A♠K♠8♣ flop. Gavin continued for 20,000 and Thompson was the only caller.
On the Q♣ turn and 8♦ river, both players checked and Gavin tabled the A♥10♦ to chop with the A♣6♣ of Thompson.
In the meanwhile, Martin Nielsen has entered the outer table.
