Event #9: US$15,000 Main Event (US$3,000,000 GTD)
Day 1 Completed
It turned out to be a wild and frantic Day 1 in Event #9: $15,000 Main Event. Ten levels were completed, and just 58 players advanced out of the 122 total entries accumulated. That number increased drastically within the last couple of hours inside the Landing Casino at Jeju Shinhwa World Resort in Jeju, South Korea.
When the dust finally settled as the 1 a.m. hour approached, it was Haohui Ma who emerged as the overall chip leader with 1,363,000 chips. Ma wasn't heard from for much of the day, however a last-mintue clash with Jumiao She resulted in Ma surpassing the rest of the field. One of the leaders that many would be more familiar with belongs to The Lord Poker Tour ambassador Quan Zhou who rallied late to bag up a stack of 964,000 chips.

There was no shortage of action throughout the day, with some players calling it a level of degeneracy based on how fast the chips were going into the middle. At one point, Gavin and Ivan Zhang who were both on multiple bullets already, stuck in a healthy amount of chips with five-deuce and eight-three respectively. Zhang managed to come out on top of that one after turning a pair of threes, sending Gavin back to the registration desk - a place that became all too familiar for him.
Some other notables that managed to make their way through the chaos unscathed include Ami Barer (1,054,000), Sean Ooi (1,041,000), Dominik Nitsche (777,000), and Mauricio Salazar Sanchez (541,000) who are representing the the rest of the world outside the many Chinese participants. Some players who were not as fortunate and who will have to return tomorrow with a fresh buy-in include Daniel "Jungleman" Cates, Stephen Song, Taylor Black, Christian Harder, and Yi Ye who were all eliminated in the last level of the night.
The schedule for Day 2 has been altered in some ways but the starting time remains the same at 1 p.m. local time. However, registration has been extended for an additional four levels on Day 2 with the first two levels being changed to "double levels", in hopes of reaching the guaranteed prizepool of $3,000,000 for this event. The original plan was to play down to the final table of nine players but that could also be in jeopardy now based on the pace of play.
The levels will remain at 50 minutes in length with a 15-minute break after every two levels and a 45-minute dinner break after the sixth level of the day. The bubble will certainly burst on Day 2 with a total of 15% of total entries reaching the money and earning a piece of that guaranteed prizepool. The players will return to the blinds at 5,000/10,000 and a 10,000 big blind ante to kick things off.
The PokerNews live reporting team will be back on the tournament floor to bring you all of the action en route to hopefully reaching the final table by the day's end.
The action has wrapped up at all of the tables and the players are starting to bag and tag their chips for the night. The tournament clock currently reads a total of 122 entries tallied for Day 1 with just 58 players advancing to Day 2 tomorrow. A full list of chip counts along with a recap of the day's action will be posted shortly.
Liang Chen opened to 22,000 from under the gun and Gary Thompson called on the button, as did Jumiao She in the big blind. The 6♠5♦3♣ flop was checked to Chen who bet 27,000 and earned a call from Thompson only.
Chen bet the J♣ turn for 30,000 and won the pot uncontested.
Thompson let go but made up for it by knocking out Yi Ye during the final hands of the night thereafter.
Mauricio Salazar Sanchez raised to 17,000 on the button and William Jia called from the big blind. The flop fell K♥Q♥10♠ and Jia check-called a bet of 20,000 from Salazar Sanchez.
The turn was the 7♥ and Jia checked again. Salazar Sanchez tossed in a bet of 41,000 and Jia stuck around for the 2♦ on the river. Jia checked for the third time and Salazar Sanchez fired out a third barrel of 85,000. Jia quickly called and Salazar Sanchez tabled A♠A♥ for the winner.
Stephen Song raised the button and Xin Tong three-bet out of the small blind with two T-25,000 chips out in front. Sean Ooi then four-bet to 100,000 from the big blind only for Song to five-bet to 180,000 with some chips behind. Tong went into the tank and used several time banks before moving all-in for around 350,000 and Ooi folded, while Song called.
Stephen Song: K♦K♠
Xin Tong: 9♣9♥
"What did you have, like ace-queen suited?" Song asked Ooi and Tong firmly pointed to one of her nines. The Q♥J♣9♠ flop provided the help, and she held on the 2♥ turn as well as Q♣ river to eliminate. Haohui Ma glanced over from the next table and asked Ooi what he had folded, who replied "ace jack".
After arriving at the table, a full board of Q♠J♥7♣2♦8♣ was spread across the felt with Renji Mao and Zhengpeng Liu heads-up in the pot. The pot had nearly 200,000 in the middle and Liu made a bet of 110,000.
Mao check-raised all in for 412,000 and Liu asked for a count before making the call. Mao flipped over Q♥Q♦ for a set of queens while Liu was forced to pay the double up after showing his A♠A♣.
The clock will be stopped with around 15 minutes left with some five to seven hands to be drawn and the field has already ballooned to 122 entries, of which nearly half of the shells have been fired in nine and a half levels of play. Only 63 players remain and aim to make it through the next couple of hands until bagging and tagging.
Joining the action on the Q♦Q♥2♥A♦ turn, Jun Liu check-called for 75,000 against Gavin and they chdcked the 4♠ on the river. Liu flashed the A♣A♥ for aces full of queens and Gavin mucked his cards with a smirk on the face.
