PokerNews Podcast: Texas Road Trip Highlights & Spotlight on Doyle Brunson

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante
PokerNews Podcast
PokerNews Podcast

In the latest PokerNews Podcast, Chad Holloway and Jesse Fullen discuss their recent road trip across the Lone Star State as a part of PokerNews' Texas Week, which you can read about in full here.

Along with senior writer Jon Sofen, the trio spent six days traveling to 26 different poker rooms in Houston, Austin, Odessa, Midland, Fort Worth, Dallas, and College Station. They also swung by Doyle Brunson's hometown of Longworth as well as Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, where "Texas Dolly" attended college and excelled at both basketball and track.

In addition to exploring rooms such as Texas Card House, The Lodge (where they touched base with Doug Polk), KoJack's, Red Star Social, Shuffle 214, Wautauga Social Lounge, Poker House Dallas, and Game On Social, the crew also stopped by some historical poker sites, such as the graves of Poker Hall of Famers Jack "Treetop" Straus and Johnny Moss.

The Texas poker market has grown leaps and bounds over the past five years, and if you've ever wanted a glimpse into what it's like, this week's episode is for you!

Fielder Calls Correctly; Lawrence Rebuys

Level 4 : 200/400, 400 ante

There was heads-up action between James Lawrence from late position and Jeff Fielder from the hijack.

The board read {9-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{5-Spades}{4-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} and with over 25,000 already in the middle, Lawrence jammed for 28,600 sending Fielder into the tank.

After careful consideration, Fielder called, and the two players tabled their hands.

Fielder quickly showed {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs} for two-pair and it was good as Lawrence tossed {10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} into the muck then quickly reentered the tournament.

Matakis Fills Up and Doubles Through Fussy

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante
Ian Matakis
Ian Matakis

There was heads-up action between Ian Matakis from the button and Leo Fussy from the big blind with a {j-Spades}{10-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} board showing.

Fussy check-raised to 15,000 after Matakis fired out a 4,800 bet into a 4,000 pot and Matakis three-bet jammed for 21,100.

After some careful thought, Fussy called and the two players tabled their hands.

Ian Matakis: {2-Spades}{2-Hearts}
Leo Fussy: {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

Matakis had Fussy drawing dead after flopping a set of deuces and the {10-Clubs} river improved him to a full house securing his double-up.

Fielder Drops Another

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante

Jeff Fielder found himself in another all-in situation, this time against John Volgren.

The board read {10-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{4-Spades}, Volgren jammed his 17,200 stack into a 15,000 pot from middle position and Fielder looked him up from late position.

John Volgren: {a-Hearts}{10-Spades}
Jeff Fielder: {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

Fielder was ahead holding a made hand of jacks but Volgren held outs as any ace, ten or heart would secure him the pot.

Unfortunately for Volgren, the river came red, but it was the {2-Diamonds} securing Fielder the pot while Volgren made his exit from the tournament field.
