Sycuan Casino
Sycuan Casino

The Mid-States Poker Tour will play host to the United States Poker Championship September 16-26 at Sycuan Casino in San Diego, California.

A total of 11 trophy events will take place including a $360 Regional $100K Guarantee during the opening weekend (September 16-19) and the $1,110 Main Event running from Thursday, September 23 through Sunday, September 26, which will feature a $300K Guarantee for its three starting flights.

Sycuan's first MSPT stop came back in March and also culminated with a $300K Guarantee Main Event. That time, Alesandro Jauregui claimed victory and the accompanying $140,665 first-place prize after topping a field of 676, which more than doubled the tournament's guaranteed prize pool.

PokerNews will be returning to Sycuan alongside MSPT to bring you live updates of both the $360 Regional and $1,110 Main Events.

Sanchez Doubles Through Simmer

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Sergio Sanchez
Sergio Sanchez

Sergio Sanchez opened to 2,700 under the gun and was three-bet to 5,000 by Jarred Simmer one seat over. Action folded back to Sanchez and he called.

Sanchez check-called a continuation-bet of 5,000 from Simmer on the flop {7-Spades}{4-Hearts}{q-Spades} and a second barrel of 7,000 on the turn {j-Clubs}. He then led out for 15,000 on the river {5-Diamonds} and saw Simmer slide in a stack of chips greater than what he had left in his stack, which he wasted no time committing.

"Top two pair," said Simmer, showing {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts}. Sanchez then tabled {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades} for top set and scored the double. His remaining stack was counted to be 46,400 and the pot was shipped his way once it was made right.

Not Seen Around the Room

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Maury Solano was just spotted with a stack of 235,000, a heap of chips that appears to be the second-largest in the room behind that of Jarred Simmer, who has chipped up to almost 250,000. Austin Peck was also just spotted with a stack of 135,000 after being moved to Table 9.

Meanwhile, 211 entries have now been logged and nine tables currently remain in play with 10 empty seats among them to accommodate for any additional late registrants. Late registration is still open for greater than three more hours.

Wechter Notches a Knockout

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Gabriel Wechter
Gabriel Wechter

Gabriel Wechter had chips in front of him on the button and was in the process of calling a re-jam from the big blind for just under 20,000.

All-In Player: {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Gabriel Wechter: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}

Wechter saw an easy runout of {9-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{9-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{3-Clubs} come, ultimately leaving him with a higher two pair than was on the board to send the short-stacked player to the rail.

Tumulak Runs Into a Bigger Pair

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Richard Tumulak
Richard Tumulak

Richard Tumulak got his 15,000 into the middle preflop from early position against a player on the button that had a slightly-covering stack. The opponent showed {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}.

"Nice hand," said Tumulak as he tabled {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}. The flop {10-Hearts}{a-Spades}{k-Clubs} reversed the players' outs, but the turn {4-Clubs} and river {a-Clubs} changed nothing from there to leave Tumulak's jacks second best and bring about his elimination.
