Arnaud Enters, Smirnov Re-enters, Patgorski and Wang Chop

Level 2 : 0/0, 1,000 ante
Romain Arnaud
Romain Arnaud

There are now 18 entries in the Short Deck Ante Only with France's Arnaud Romain entering the fray, though only 17 of these remain in action with Mikhail Smirnov busting and re-entering and chips are changing hands with a very high frequency.

Following a limp from Yueqine Zhou in middle position, we caught Arnaud in action and all-in for the first 100,000 of his initial first bullet from the button, with the newly re-entered Smirnov also coming along from the small blind and Zhou also making the call.

Romain Arnaud: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Mikhail Smirnov: {j-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Yueqine Zhou: {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}

The board ran out {8-Hearts}{6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{a-Hearts} to see Arnaud win the main pot, Zhou win the side pot and Smirnov lose the first bullet of his second buy-in.

A big pot played out shortly after this on table one, but it resulted in an anti-climatic chop, though this was a good thing for Gabe Patgorski, who found himself trailing in a hand to Zuo Wang.

It was Yong Gang Guo opening the action for 7,000 from mid-position with Wang re-popping to 40,000 from the button.

"Let's go!" said Patgorski, chucking in the call from the big blind and Guo called as well to take the action three-way to a flop of {k-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs}.

"Boom!" said a gleeful Patgorski, moving all-in immediately for close to 475,000 and while Guo bowed out Wang was going nowhere and made a speedy call.

Zuo Wang: {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Gabe Patgorski: {9-Spades}{10-Clubs}

"Can I even win?" asked Patgorski.

"I don't think so," said tablemate Jaime Kaplin. Patgorski could still chop though, and that's exactly what happened when the {q-Spades} turn and {j-Spades} river completed the hand and saw the pair chop the pot.

Smirnov's Chips Chopped

Level 1 : 0/0, 1,000 ante

Following limps from the rest of the table, the newly arrived Devan Tang made it 2,000 to go on the button, and Furkat Rakhimov squeezed to 8,000 from the small blind. Mikhail Smirnov moved all-in from the big blind for 60,000, Yueqine Zhou folded and Phua asked Tang how much he has behind before moving all in for 180,000.Tang folded and Rakhimov got his 110,000 in and the players revealed their hands.

Furkat Rakhimov: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}
Mikhail Smirnov: {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
Paul Phua: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}

The board ran out {7-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{9-Spades}{8-Spades} and Smirnov's chips were chopped up with the Russian calling for his second bullet.

Patgorski Pulls Ahead as Field Grows

Level 1 : 0/0, 1,000 ante

Jaime Kaplan has entered to bring the field up to 15, and there has been a lot of early chip movements and player re-shuffling already. Gabe Patgorski has extended his lead and is now sitting on a stack of 550,000, Zuo Wang has dropped to 55,000 and has no extra bullets remaining of his initial three.

Wai Kin Yong busted his second bullet to Xuan Tan, who had {a-Spades}{q-Hearts} and had spiked top pair, while Yong's hand was already in the muck. That puts Tan up to 250,000.

We caught the tail end of a pot between Mikhail Smirnov and Yaqi Sun, who have been moved over to Paul Phua's table. With the community cards spread {j-Clubs}{q-Spades}{q-Diamonds} {j-Hearts} and 30,000 already in the pot Smirnov (small blind) had checked the action over to Sun, who checked it back.

The {10-Diamonds} river saw Smirnov check again, and Sun fire for 25,000. Smirnov chuckled and flashed Sun the {j-Spades} and Sun returned the favor, flashing Smirnov the {9-Diamonds} as he raked in the pot.

Field Grows and Phua Doubles

Level 1 : 0/0, 1,000 ante
Paul Phua
Paul Phua

The field has grown to 13 players with China's Yueqine Zhou, Hong Kong's Yan Pan Chan, Norway's Marius Torbergen, and Russia's Furkat Rakhimov and Mikhail Smirnov all taking their seats and there are now three tables on the go.

Phua scored an early double to 200,000 with ace-queen, though we are not sure who contributed to his stack. The action looks primed to be both fast and furious and it could be a crazy day at the tables.

Early Triple for Patgorski

Level 1 : 0/0, 1,000 ante
Gabe Patgorski
Gabe Patgorski

It has not taken long for the action to get going and Gabe Patgorski has binked an early triple on his first bullet with a three-way pre-flop all-in going down between Patgorski, Wai Kin Yong and recent arrival Yong Gang Guo.

We arrived in the aftermath as stacks were being divvied up and extra bullets brought over. Wai Kin Yong was on the button with {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts} face up on the felt in front of him, Guo (small blind) had {j-Spades}{10-Clubs} face up on the felt in front of him and Patgorski has {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}.

The community cards were spread {9-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} {6-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} with Patgorski catching his two-outer on the river to take an early lead. Alan Sass and Xuan Tan arrived as all this craziness was going on and have also taken their seats to bring the field up to seven.

The big buy-in high stakes tournament action at the 2018 Triton Super High Roller Montenegro is not restricted to the Main Event, with the HKD $1-million Short Deck Ante Only Event set to start at 4pm local time.

Taking places the luxurious Maestral Resort & Casino in Budva, Montenegro, this is only the second ever time the exciting new Short Deck Ante Only format has been run as a tournament, with the HKD $250,000 (~$31,850) opening event, which Phil Ivey took down for USD $604,992, being the first.

Compared to regular No-Limit Hold'em, this format features a 36-card deck with the 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s removed, with aces doubling as a five instead. With just 36 cards instead of 52, straights become more common, while flushes are a rare sight. In order to adjust for this, the hand ranking chart has been updated and a flush beats a full house.

There's are no blinds; instead, the game is played ante-only, with the button posting a double ante. All players start with 100,000 in chips, plus two extra 100k bullets to be added at any time.

Day 1 of the two-day event will feature seven 60-minute levels with multiple re-entry available during the registration period, which closes at the end of the 15-minute dinner break on level nine, at around 3pm on Friday, 18 May.

With players of the caliber of Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, Dan “jungleman12” Cates, Mikita Badziakouski and Triton Poker founder Richard Yong just some of the big names expected to attend, the action will be epic, as will the prize pool.

As always, the PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand to bring you all the thrills from the tournament floor so keep your browser locked to this page to follow all the action.
