Danes Lead After Day 1a of the 2017 Unibet Open Copenhagen Main Event, Van Lancker Survives

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Day 1a of the 2017 Unibet Open Copenhagen DDK 8,250 Main Event is in the books. 168 players each put up the Danish equivalent of €1,100 and 47 of them made their way to the second day. Chipleader is Tommy Vedelfort (244,600), who jumped over Sidsel Nebel (241,900) during the final hands of the day. The Danes came out in full force today and claimed five of the top six spots at the conclusion of the day.

2017 Unibet Open London winner [Removed:158] (46,200) is still in the hunt for his second title of the year. Other notables that made it through were Ioana Silvana (177,900), Bhavin Khatri (149,000), Peter Harkes (107,300) and Johnny Hansen (93,500).

The day started off with plenty of notables in the field, including a slew of eSports professionals who have been invited by Unibet to participate. Players with huge followings online, such as Craig "onscreenlol" Shannon and Sophia "Djari" White, gave poker a shot, but all except one fell short of making Day 2. Alan "Hotted89" Widmann was said exception: he survived the day with 41,800 and still has a shot to pull of the huge upset.

Two-time Unibet Open winner Mateusz Moolhuizen found himself on the rail halfway through the day. He was quickly joined by the likes of David Lappin, Daiva Barauskaite, Charlotte Van Brabander and Moolhuizen's girlfriend and vlogger Dehlia de Jong, who all ran out of chips in the later stages of the day.

In the penultimate level of the day, one of the biggest clashes of the day took place. It was Hedel who clashed in a huge hand with Joachim Kneivel, where the latter bit the dust in an upset. In a three-bet pot, Hedel was all in with king-jack against Kneivel's queen-nine on a king-jack-ten flop. The turn brought another jack to give Hedel an unbeatable full house and a fourth jack on the river was just icing on the cake. Hedel was poised to claim the overnight chip lead after that, but Vedelfort's last-minute surge prevented that from happening.

Day 1b will commence at at noon local time tomorrow. Players will once again start with 30,000 in chips and play ten levels of sixty minutes. Follow PokerNews throughout the week for more updates of this exciting event.

Charlotte Van Brabander

Charlotte Van Brabander opened to 2,500 and Anne Meri called from the small blind. Semere Haile three-bet to 11,300 from the blind, Van Brabander four-bet to 27,500 and Meri quickly folded.

Haile went in the tank before shoving all in, effectively 49,900 for Van Brabander to call. The Belgian Unibet Poker wasted no time in calling the rest of her stack off.

Charlotte Van Brabander: {A-Hearts}{A-Spades}
Semere Haile: {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}

It was the dream scenario for Van Brabander and her hand held up on {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{3-Spades}. Van Brabander now has more than 100,000 in chips.

No Third Title for Moolhuizen

Level 7 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Mateusz Moolhuizen will remain at two Unibet Open titles for the time being. With a stack of 13,400, Moolhuizen opened to 2,000 with {A-Spades}{9-Spades} and got two callers.

The flop came down {3-Spades}{8-Clubs}{3-Clubs} and one of Moolhuizen's opponents led out 4,000. The other player folded and Moolhuizen shoved all in After asking for a count, his opponent made the call for the extra 7,000.

A large field is looming with a lot of big names already confirmed, headlined by none other than the enigmatic Viktor "Isildur1" Blom. Coming off a big SCOOP-series online, the Swedish ultra high-roller will have a lot of eyes on him as he shoots for Unibet Open glory. Blom will be joined by numerous eSports players such as Thijs "ThijsNL" Molendijk, Craig "onscreenlol" Shannon, Alan "hotted89" Widman and Sophia "Djarri" White. During Unibet Open London, the first stop of the year, the Twitch live streaming total views doubled from 800.000 to 1,6 million, with the streamers playing a big part in introducing new eyes to the world of poker.

The Main Event kicks off with two opening days with players beginning with 30,000 opening chips and blinds increasing every 60 minutes. Surviving players will compete for two more days on May 27 and 28 until the latest Unibet Open winner is crowned, following in the footsteps of [Removed:158], the 2017 Unibet Open London champion (£71,950).

In addition to the Main Event, the other multi-day event is the two-day DKK 2,530 NLH Deep Stack on May 27-28. Players start off with 20,000 chips and blinds increase every 40 minutes. Players that bust out during the late-registration period can reenter one time.

Two single day events will take place in Omaha on May 26, both with a DKK 1,650 buy-in. The first one at 8 p.m. features a turbo structure with players starting off with 10,000 chips and blinds increasing every 15 minutes. The second one two hours later at 10 p.m. will take some luck with players all in every hand until a winner is declared.

Events off the felt include a welcome party on May 25 at 10 p.m. and a players party on May 27 at 11:30 p.m. The entire schedule of the 2017 Unibet Open Copenhagen is as follows:
