Benson Leads Final 22 Players; Six to Fall Before Money is Reached

Level 8 : 300/600, 0 ante
Gary Benson
Gary Benson

On Sunday, the 2014 World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific continued with Day 1 action from Event #3 $1,650 Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO). The tournament attracted 123 runners – down 49 from the year before – which created a prize pool of $184,500 that is to be awarded to the top 16 finishers with the winner taking home $51,660.

The man best positioned to make a run at the five-figure payday, as well as the championship gold bracelet, is Australian Poker Hall of Famer and WSOP bracelet winner, who lead the advancing 22 players with 71,200. However, several others are looking to stand in his way including Jeff Lisandro (60,400), Jason Gray (34,500), Ismael Bojang (27,000), Oliver Gill (26,300), Ami Barer (25,600), and Mike Watson (6,900).

PLO is a volatile game, so it was no surprise to see players hit the rail early. Among the first to go was Mike Leah, who said he called a raise holding the {a-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{3-Spades} and then called a bet on the {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{10-} flop. Leah, who had two pair with a flush draw, called another bet on the turn, and then put out a big bet after his opponent checked the river, which was a heart. His opponent woke up with a check-raise, and Leah called off his last few hundred with his flush. Unfortunately for him, it was no good as his opponent held the nut flush with {k-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{x-}{x-}.

Others who fell on Day 1 included Jonathan Duhamel, Mohsin Charania, Jeff Madsen, Jonathan Dimmig, Phil Hellmuth, Ryan Riess, Billy “The Croc” Argyros, Antonio Esfandiari, and Australia’s very own Joe Hachem, who was playing in his first event of the 2014 WSOP APAC.

As for Benson, he got many of his chips in the last level of the night. On a flop of {j-Spades}{4-Spades}{6-Clubs}, two players checked before Benson bet out 6,000 from the hijack. Dylan Wilkerson then went into the tank for a minute from the cut off before potting to 24,800. The other two players got out of the way before Benson moved all in for a total of 30,300 and was called.

Benson: {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}{6-Spades}{7-Clubs}
Wilkerson: {q-Spades}{2-Spades}{4-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Benson had the better over pair as well as the nut flush draw leaving Wilkerson with very few outs. The {j-Hearts} on the turn and {k-Diamonds} on the river were no help, and after a count of all the chips it was determined that Wilkerson had 100 less then Benson and was therefore eliminated.

The remaining 22 players will return to action at 12:30 p.m. local time on Monday, and the plan is to play down to the final table of nine. Of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be there every step of the way to bring you all the action and eliminations from the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia.

Esfandiari & Hachem Ousted

Level 5 : 100/200, 0 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

Antonio Esfandiari recently fell to Vadim Pinsky, and while we didn't witness the hand, Tam Truong did and was kind enough to relate the story.

According to him, a player raised to 500, Pinsky called from the small blind, and a short-stacked Esfandiari called from the big, leaving himself just 150 behind in the process. The {q-}{j-}{7-} flop saw Pinsky check, Esfandiari bet all in, and two calls follow. The two active players then checked the {6-} turn and {2-} river. The original raiser showed {j-}{j-}{x-}{x-} for a flopped set, but it was no good as Pinsky had flopped a bigger set with {q-}{q-}{x-}{x-}. Esfandiari's hand remains a mystery as he mucked before exiting the tournament area.

Meanwhile, 2005 World Series of Poker champ Joe Hachem was eliminated from the tournament in unknown action.

Little Buried by Spades

Level 5 : 100/200, 0 ante
Jonathan Little
Jonathan Little

Jonathan Little found himself and roughly his last 2,000 all in against Jan Suchanek and an unknown player.

Both Suchanek and his opponent checked down the {k-Clubs}{9-Spades}{4-Spades}{8-Clubs}{5-Spades} board before Suchanek check-folded to a bet of 2,000.

Little then mucked his hand when his opponent tabled his {A-Spades}{j-Spades}{5-Hearts}{4-Clubs} for the nut flush while making a quick exit to the rail, but not before uttering, "goodbye everyone"

Onto the Next One for Hellmuth

Level 4 : 75/150, 0 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

We missed the elimination of Phil Hellmuth, but you know him, he has to tell somebody about it. Fortunately he chose us.

Hellmuth stopped by the desk to inform us that he and another player each got 1,750 in preflop and saw a flop of {k-}{4-}{5-}. Hellmuth shoved the rest of his stack and his opponent snap-called with {k-}{j-}{10-}{8-} for just a pair of kings, which were behind the {a-}{a-}{5-}{6-} aces of Hellmuth.

The 13-time bracelet winner got it in good, but he lost the lead when a {J-} on the turn gave his opponent two pair. A {8-} on the river failed to help Hellmuth, and he is now 0-3 at the 2013 WSOP APAC.

"I'm gonna win the next one," Hellmuth said with confidence before extolling his PLO tournament game.

Danzer Won't Be Adding POY Points in Event #3

Level 3 : 50/100, 0 ante
George Danzer
George Danzer

Brandon Shack-Harris, Daniel Negreanu, and Richard Ashby had all been eliminated from this tournament, which left George Danzer with a freeroll to extend his 2014 World Series of Poker Player of the Year lead. Unfortunately for the German, any chance of that happening just came to an end courtesy of Michael Wang.

We missed the hand, but Danzer was kind enough to provide us some details after the fact. According to him, it was a "classic PLO" hand. A raising war left him with a pot-sized bet behind, and he got it in on a {k-}{10-}{9-} flop against Wang.

Wang: {a-}{a-}{3-}{3-}
Danzer: {k-}{j-}{9-}{3-}

Danzer had two pair with his double-suited hand, which matched two of the same suit on the flop. On the other hand, Wang just had the aces... that is until a {10-} on the turn gave him two pair to counterfeit Danzer. The river was a blank, and that was all she wrote for Danzer in Event #3.

Shack-Harris Exits; Negreanu Enters

Level 3 : 50/100, 0 ante
Brandon Shack-Harris
Brandon Shack-Harris

A short-stacked Brandon Shack-Harris opened for 325 from middle position only to have Jordan Kilner, who was seated to his immediate left, three-bet to 700. Action folded back to Shack-Harris, who called off for 575 total.

Shack-Harris: {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{7-Clubs}
Kilner: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{k-Spades}{10-Hearts}

Shack-Harris was in need of some help, but the {4-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop was dry as could be. Shack-Harris needed running cards to stay alive, but the {10-Diamonds} turn took away any chance of that happening.

"Good luck," Shack-Harris offered even before the {6-Spades} river made his elimination official.

Meanwhile, Daniel Negreanu, who is also contending for the 2014 WSOP POY title, has entered the tournament. He has a chance to catch Shack-Harris, though the current leader, George Danzer, is still alive here in Event #3.

Mohsin Done in By Running Diamonds

Level 2 : 25/50, 0 ante
Mohsin Charania in earlier WSOP APAC action.
Mohsin Charania in earlier WSOP APAC action.

After two players had limped, another player opted to raise to 125. Mohsin Charania called from the button, another player came along, and the limpers put in the additional chips to make it five-way action to the {8-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{k-Hearts} flop.

Action checked to Charania, who bet 450 holding a set with the {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. One of the limpers then check-raised to 1,100, the original raiser flatter, and Charania three-bet all in for 5,700. Only one player called him holding {q-}{j-}{10-}{x-} with two diamonds.

Charania was in a great spot to win the large pot, but the running {3-Diamonds} turn and {4-Diamonds} river was a dagger through his heart as his opponent made a runner-runner flush.

"That was stupid," Charania lamented before taking his leave from the tournament.

Duhamel vs. Lin: Only One Will Survive

Level 1 : 25/25, 0 ante
Jonathan Duhamel in earlier WSOP APAC action.
Jonathan Duhamel in earlier WSOP APAC action.

On a flop of {j-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{9-Clubs}, David Lin bet 450 from the big blind only to have 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel raise to 1,425 from the under-the-gun position. Roland Israelashivili folded from late position, Lin called, and it was heads-up action to the {9-Diamonds} turn.

Lin checked, Duhamel moved in for his last 1,050, and Lin called. The cards were turned up an Duhamel discovered the bad news.

Duhamel: {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}
Lin: {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{3-Spades}

Duhamel had flopped good with top two pair, but he was counterfeited on the turn when Lin made aces and nines. The {4-Clubs} river actually improved Lin to a flush, and Duhamel took his leave in Level 1.

Are You Ready for Some Four-Card PLO Madness?!?

Will George Danzer earn more POY points?
Will George Danzer earn more POY points?

Welcome to the third gold bracelet event of the 2014 World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific — Event #3 $1,650 Pot-Limit Omaha. This is the second year this particular tournament has graced the schedule, with the inaugural event attracting 172 entries. Jim Collopy won that event for $69,662, and today poker hopefuls will attempt to follow in his footsteps.

Unlike Texas hold'em, which is played with two cards, pot-limit Omaha (PLO) is played with four cards. Aside from that, the big difference is that players MUST use two cards from their hand and three from the board to make their best five-card hand. PLO has a reputation of being an action-packed game as made hands versus draws is the order of the day.

Some of poker's biggest names will be in action today including 13-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth; World Poker Tour champ Jonathan Little; WSOP champs Ryan Riess and Jonathan Duhamel; and Big One for One Drop champ Antonio Esfandiari. Likewise, the three players atop the 2014 WSOP Player of the Year Leaderboard — George Danzer, Brandon Shack-Harris, and Daniel Negreanu — will look to add points to their totals.

Yesterday, Danzer — who was trailing Shack-Harris by less than 10 points at the time — worked his way to a 22nd-place finish in Event #1 $1,100 No-Limit Hold'em Accumulator and took over the top spot. Shack-Harris' min-cash in the same event resulted in him earning 8.5 points, whereas Danzer picked up 17 points — meaning the latter now leads the former 762.2 to 760.5. Clearly it's going to be a tight race.

Players will begin with 4,500 in tournament chips, and the plan for the night is to play eight one-hour levels with a 60-minute dinner break after four levels. Late registration will remain open for six levels. Those who survive the night will then return at 12:30 p.m. on Monday for Day 2 action. Who will make it through? Stay tuned as we bring you all the latest and greatest from the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia.
