"Poker Isn't Everything": Why Champ Espen Jorstad Skipped This Summer's WSOP

Level 3 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Espen Jorstad
Espen Jorstad

After winning the 2022 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event for $10 million, longtime poker pro Espen Jorstad dove headfirst into the world of Super High Rollers, traveling the high-stakes circuit from Cyprus to South Korea and firing $100,000 and $200,000 buy-in events.

But the two-time bracelet winner took a step back this year from the game he's played since 2004, skipping this summer's WSOP in Las Vegas to focus on the finer things in life: meditation, mental health and connection with others.

"I didn't play much poker (this year)," the Norwegian told PokerNews. "Poker has kind of been an all-in adventure for a lot of years now. And it was nice to take some time off and ... work on myself a little bit more, just focus on health, fitness, relationships."

Chufarin Busts Zhang

Level 3 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Denys Chufarin opened to 10,000 in the hijack, and Yu Zhang made the call on the button. Miguel Capriles came along in the small blind, and Daniel Rezaei tossed in a call from the big blind.

Action checked to Chufarin on the JA9 flop, who continued for 23,000. Zhang was the only caller to see the 2 turn, where Chufarin checked.

Zhang slid out a bet of 65,000, and Chufarin asked to confirm that his opponent had only 62,000 behind. After using a time bank card, Chufarin raised enough to cover Zhang, and the call was made.

Yu Zhang: KQ All in
Denys Chufarin: JJ

Zhang needed a club other than the ace to survive, but did not improve on the 5 river. Chufarin's set of jacks held for the knockout.

Lefrancois Bets Big

Level 3 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Ana Marquez opened to 8,000 in middle position, and Pascal Lefrancois made the call in the hijack. Mihai-Cristian Tabac then three-bet to 32,000 on the button, with only Lefrancois calling again.

Lefrancois checked the K56 flop, and Tabac counted out a bet of 17,000. That was met with a check-raise from Lefrancois to 45,000.

Tabac called to the 6 turn, where Lefrancois led out for 85,000. The call was made, and the 9 river completed the board.

Lefrancois used a time bank card before sliding out 360,000. That produced a fold from Tabac, and Lefrancois added to his stack.
