Day 1 Complete; Slaubaugh Slaughtering the Competition

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Cody Slaubaugh
Cody Slaubaugh

Day 1 is in the books for the World Series of Poker Circuit Caesars Palace $1,600 Main Event. A starting field of 496 players came out and generated a prize pool of nearly $715,000. Of that, nearly $154,000 will be awarded to first place and the top 54 spots will be paid out. At the end of the day today, Cody Slaubaugh has the most chips with 401,900. Behind him is Adam Hui with 306,500 and Mary Jones with 304,500.

Some of the notables who turned up for the event included 2010 WSOP Player of the Year Frank Kassela, 2007 WSOP Main Event champion Jerry Yang and 2006 WSOP Main Event champion Jamie Gold. Those three were joined by Allen Cunningham, James Van Alstyne, Dennis Phillips, Bryan Micon, Eric Froehlich and Dutch Boyd. Unfortunately, all of those players failed to make it out of Day 1 and won’t be collecting this WSOP Circuit title.

On the other side of things, Chad Brown, Erica Schoenberg, Amanda Baker, Andrew Watson and Alex Santiago all did very well on Thursday and will be returning on Friday to continue the quest.

Day 2 kicks off to noon local time here in Las Vegas tomorrow, so be sure to stay tuned for all of the live action then as only PokerNews can bring it to you!

Mess with the Dragon and You'll Get Burned

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Spitting fire now
Spitting fire now

Action folded to the player on the button and he moved all in for 40,400. David Pham reraised all in for a tiny bit more at 43,000 from the small blind. No one else was in the hand.

Pham: {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}
Button: {K-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}

The board ran out clean for Pham with the {A-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{5-Spades} coming down to give him a flush. He sent his opponent packing and moved to about 90,000 in chips.

Fricke Cut in Half

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

There was 20,000 in chips already in the pot when the big blind bet 20,000 on a flop of {q-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{3-Spades}. Jimmy Fricke had the button and raised to 75,000, just enough to set the big blind all in. That player quickly called with {10-Spades}{3-Clubs}, trip treys, against Fricke's {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts}, two pair queens and treys. The turn and river blanked out, cutting Fricke's stack in half to 76,000 and doubling his opponent to 150,000.

Big Stack Alerts

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

A couple of players are now crushing more than 300,000 in chips. Cody Slaubaugh is rocking the biggest stack we've seen with 370,000. He's followed by Mary Jones, who is also north of 300,000. Other big stacks include Adam Hui (250,000) and Andrew Watson (240,000).

Tyner's Steal Fails

Level 16 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

Action folded to Nancy Todd Tyner on the button and she moved all in. The small blind quickly called all in and the big blind folded. Tyner said, "You caught me, I was bluffing," as she tabled the {K-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}. The small blind rolled over the {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}.

The board ran out {10-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{3-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and Tyner was knocked all the way back to 11,000. Her opponent was all in for 31,200.

Never Count Out Chad Brown

Level 15 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Chad Brown has had a tumultuous 2011. After having surgery to remove a massive tumor from his abdomen, he returned to the poker table and won his first tournament back, a $2,000 event at Wynn. He's in great shape here today after winning a sizable pot with trip 6s. On a three-way flop of {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{10-Spades}, action checked to Brown on the button. He bet 7,300 and was called by one opponent. That player check-called another 10,000 on the {5-Diamonds} turn and 15,000 on the {j-Diamonds} river. Brown then opened his {a-Spades}{6-Spades} to collect the pot and climb to 150,000.

Stann Times Two

Level 15 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

The post-dinner play hasn't been kind to Dave Stann. He found himself sitting behind 55,000 and in the small blind with {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}. After a player in early position opened with a standard raise, Stann put all 55,000 at risk. The under-the-gun player asked for a count, saying that he would "probably call". When he saw the amount was around 50,000, he calld with {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}. Pocket queens won this race, {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}.

Stann is up to about 115,000.
