Five players took a flop for 4,500 in this hand, and it would turn out to be a good one. The dealer spread out a flop. When the action checked to Matt Waxman, he slid out 13,500, and Lawrence Jacobs bumped it up to 40,000 total. Waxman made the call, and the two went heads up to the turn. Waxman knocked the table, and Jacobs instantly announced an all in. Waxman's call came even quicker than the shove, and he was at risk as the cards were tabled.
Showdown
Waxman:
Jacobs:
Jacobs won a big pot with a set of threes yesterday, but he'd need some help to win this one. Waxman turned the nuts, and Jacobs needed to pair the board to stay alive. Waxman had one blocker, too, as the would make him a straight flush.
River: !
Waxman quietly announced, "Straight flush," as soon as the river card peeled off, just like he knew it was coming. Jacobs paired the board, but it was the wrong pair, and he's been knocked down around 70,000 after that pot.
Waxman is now on the charge with 264,000 chips stacked in front of him.
Prince Gaspard opened to 5,000 in early position, and he was called by both Gary Friedlander (middle position) and Brian Senie (big blind).
The flop came , and all three players checked to the turn. Senie took the lead now with 13,000 of his own chips, folding Gaspard without incident. Friedlander made the call, though, and he faced a final bet of 24,000 after the . He tanked and called, and Senie admitted, "You got it."
Friedlander tabled the for two pair, and the pot pushes him up to 383,000 as he stretches his chip lead.
Allen Kessler showed up to the tournament today with two suitcases full of stuff. He checked out of his room this morning, possibly a bit pessimistic about his bottom-of-the-pack chip count at the start of the day. It didn't take long for him to get his money in.
From middle position, Kyle Bowker opened to 5,000, and Kessler three-bet all in for 39,700 from the big blind. Bowker called with , and Kessler was flipping for his tournament life with .
Board:
That's safe for the "Chainsaw", and he's doubled to 82,800 with those pocket jacks. Bowker is now the short stack with just about 30,000 left.
Under the gun, Adam Levy opened the pot to 4,800, and he stepped right into a big bear trap. Two seats over, Brian Roberts flatted, and the action came to Gary Friedlander in the cutoff seat. He squeezed in a raise to 21,400 total, and Levy shoved in for his last 60,900. That sent Roberts deep into the tank, and he eventually settled on a call once again. Friedlander quickly shoved over the top, and Roberts reluctantly made the call again, his third call of the preflop betting round. This one put him all in for 117,000. With he and Levy both at risk, the cards were turned up:
Levy:
Roberts:
Friedlander:
"Roothlus" couldn't believe his timing, while table mate Steve Brecher has seen this before. Yesterday, it was he who had the aces in this exact spot, and they held to earn him a double knockout. Friedlander's aces held as well, the board running to send two players out here early in Day 3.
It's Levy out in 18th place and Roberts in 17th, and Friedlander has vaulted himself into the lead with about 320,000.
With 64 minutes left in Level 15, the cards are in the air here on Day 2. We'd expect this to take about six, possibly seven levels to play down to a final table.
Welcome to Day 3 of PokerNews' coverage of the World Series of Poker Circuit Southern Regional Championship! After 15 levels and change, just 18 players remain from a starting field of 75. Not only does each player have their eye on the first-place prize of $237,456, but the nine final tablists will receive an automatic bid into the WSOP-C National Championship to be held in less than a week's time at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
Leading the way into Day 3 is Brian Senie with 291,000, but an eager and talented bunch is hot on his heels. Here is the table and seat draw for Day 3:
