Carroll Very Active, Froehlich Doubles, Julius Needs a Corona and More

Ryan Julius
Ryan Julius

Carroll Doubles - 2:29 PM

James Carroll was all in preflop with the {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} against the {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for Alan Cutler. Carroll flopped a nine and then faded a flush draw that Cutler turned to double up to about 35,000 in chips.

Thomas Moves Up By Raising Stammen's River Bet - 2:36 PM

James Carroll raised preflop to 2,700. Daniel Thomas made the call and Keven Stammen called from the big blind. The flop came down {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} and Stammen checked. Carroll fired 4,600 and Thomas made the call. Stammen also called.

The turn brought the {2-Clubs} and all three players checked to see the {7-Spades} roll off on the river. Stammen led with a bet of 4,700 and Carroll folded. Thomas put in a raise to 15,500 and Stammen folded.

Thomas moved up to 84,000 and Stammen dropped to 46,000.

Stout Doubles Through Elpayaa2:36 PM

Matt Stout, all in for 27,200 preflop, found a fortunate double with {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} against Joe Elpayaa’s {A-Spades}{K-Spades} when the board came down {Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}. Stout improved his stack to about 58,000 while Elpayaa slipped to roughly 42,000.

Anderson Makes Quads2:40 PM

James Anderson is up to about 270,000 after winning a huge pot, eliminating James Gladwell. All in after a flop of {J-Spades}{6-Spades}{5-Hearts}, Anderson’s {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs} was miles ahead of Gladwell’s {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}. The {10-Clubs} turn card followed by the {J-Diamonds} river card further improved Anderson’s hand, moving him up toward the top of the leader board.

Froehlich Doubles with Flush - 2:41 PM

James Carroll bet the flop of {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} before Alan Cutler raised. Eric Froehlich reraised all in for 31,000 total and Carroll folded. Cutler made the call with the {A-Diamonds}{J-Spades} for the nut flush draw. Froehlich already had a flush with the {J-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}.

The turn was the {3-Spades} and the river the {2-Hearts}, bricking out for Cutler and giving Froehlich the double. That pot put Froehlich up to about 80,000 in chips.

Stammen Busts Cutler2:52 PM

On a flop of {8-Hearts}{5-Spades}{3-Spades}, Alan Cutler went all in for about 9,000 and Keven Stammen raised, isolating the pot after a third player folded. Stammen’s {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts} held up against Cutler {8-Spades}{6-Diamonds} after the turn and river fell the {K-Clubs} and {5-Hearts}, respectively. “Stamdogg” is up to about 62,000.

No Penalty, But a Firm Warning - 2:55 PM

Len Ashby opened the pot with a raise, and Frank Rusnak three-bet from the next seat over. When it came back around to Ashby, he plunked out a big stack of high-denomination chips totaling 73,000. He thought it was enough to cover Rusnak, and Rusnak thought so as well as he snap-announced a call and turned up his {Q-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds}. Ashby tabled his {A-Hearts} {Q-Spades}, but there was a problem. When the stacks were counted down, it was actually Rusnak with the slightly covering stack, and Ashby still had 6,800 chips behind his four-bet. Hence, there was technically action still pending, even though neither player realized it at showdown.

Ashby went ahead and bet his remainder in the dark, and the dealer ran a flop of {10-Spades} {4-Hearts} {8-Clubs}. Rusnak made the call, and Ashby was in bad shape. Bad shape, that is, until the {A-Spades} peeled off on fourth street to give him the big lead. The river {7-Hearts} secured his double up, and he's back up around 175,000.

Rusnak, on the other hand, is left with just over 5,000. But that wasn't even the bad news. A pair of floormen came over to discuss the situation with the two players involved. The initial ruling was that both Rusnak and Ashby were to receive a one-round penalty for technically exposing their cards with action pending, but Rusnak was going to be blinded out while he was serving his penalty.

"I think that's terrible," Kevin Saul said from across the table. He continued to argue with the floor staff, and in fact no final decision had been made yet. After some more discussion, it became clear that there was no funny stuff involved, and it was simply an honest mistake by the two men.

Using what everyone thought was proper discretion (and with the fairness of the game in the forefront), the floor staff instructed the dealer to proceed with the next hand, but not without issuing a strong warning to both players. "So in the fututre, guys, we absolutely need to make sure the pot is square before we turn the hands up. We can't have that happen again."

Rusnak was eliminated just a moment later.

One for Utnage - 3:05 PM

Tony Utnage won his first WSOP Circuit gold ring in a preliminary event in Southern Indiana and is playing here in Hammond for the $10,000 Regional Championship. He raised under the gun to 3,000 and Gordon Vayo called from the button. The flop came down {K-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{10-Spades} and Utnage fired 3,600. Vayo folded and Utnage won the pot to move to 45,000 in chips.

Big Stack Update - 3:10 PM

Ryan Julius - 305,000
David Sesso - 294,000
Jonathan Tamayo - 270,000
James Anderson, 266,000
Anthony Hartmann - 235,000

Selbst Runs Into Parades’ Full House3:15 PM

In middle position, Vanessa Selbst raised to 3,000 and next to act, David Paredes made it 9,000 to play. Action folded around to Selbst and she called, leading to a {Q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{5-Spades} flop. Selbst checked and Paredes bet 11,000, getting a quick call from Selbst. When the {9-Diamonds} hit the turn, Selbst put together chips and bet 16,000. Paredes called and the {8-Spades} fell on the river.

Selbst shoved and when Paredes called instantly, Selbst winced and knew she was beat. Paredes turned over {Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} for a full house. Selbst flipped over a {9-Hearts} and shipped her remaining 48,000-ish to Paredes, now up to about 280,000.

Corona, Please - 3:15 PM

Well, Ryan Julius tried to have all the chips in play by playing a massive 280,000-chip pot, but the poker gods weren't quite with him on this one.

Julius opened with a raise to 2,700 and then Michael Kelly made the call. Alexander Queen called and then Matt Stout three-bet to 10,800. Play folded back over to Julius and he asked to see how much Stout had left, which was exactly 59,000. Julius then paused for a little bit. "I'm going to raise," he said. "Make it 20,800," putting out the amount of chips needed to make it that much.

Action then moved back to Kelly and he thought for a bit. Eventually, Kelly moved all in for 133,200. Queen folded quickly and then Stout slammed his hand in as if he really wanted to play this one. Julius then made the call.

Julius tabled the {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades} and Kelly showed the {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}. The flop contained an ace when it came down {A-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{5-Clubs} and Kelly took the lead. Everyone at the table had their jaws on the felt with what they were witnessing as the board ran out {2-Clubs} for the turn and {8-Hearts} for the river.

Kelly won the hand with his pair of aces, doubling up huge to 280,000. Julius was left with about 180,000 and a blank stare on his face.

"What the hell just happened?!?!" asked Julius after he sent over the chips.

"I don't really know what to say in these situations, but thank you," said Kelly to Julius.

"Thank you? You don't say thank you," said Adam Levy. "You just stack your chips quietly.

"I need a Corona," said Julius, to which Levy grabbed the cocktail server and ordered a Corona for Julius.

"It's on me," said Levy.

Levy Doubles Through Kelly Just As Level 12 Ends3:33 PM

Michael Kelly just shipped a portion of his newfound chips to Adam Levy. With the board reading {10-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, Levy got it all in for 80,500 with {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} against Kelly’s {4-Spades}{4-Clubs}. The river fell a safe {9-Spades} for Levy and is up to about 205,000.

Tryba Doubles First Hand, Mercier Sent Packing By Paredes, Cab Driver Gets Lost

Tryba Doubles Through Shorr1:05 PM

Chris Tryba got off to a good start today, doubling with {2-Spades}{2-Diamonds} against Shannon Shorr’s {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}. The board ran out {K-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} and Tryba doubled to about 35,000. Shorr slipped to 113,000

Chainsaw Cut Down - 1:14 PM

All in preflop, Allen Kessler ran {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades} into James Gladwell's {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}. Both a king and an ace hit the flop and Kessler could not find the last king in the deck, eliminated early in Level 11.

Pesek Plucked from the Field - 1:15 PM

From under the gun, Alan Cutler raised to 2,700. Michael Pesek called all in from the cutoff seat and then Daniel Thomas called the raise from the small blind. Nenad Medic was in the big blind and also called.

The flop came down {6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and all three of the remaining active players checked. The turn brought the {10-Clubs} and Thomas checked. Medic fired 4,000 and Cutler folded. Thomas also folded and Medic won the small side pot before the hands were revealed.

Pesek: {8-Spades}{6-Spades}
Medic: {10-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}

The river completed the board with the {K-Spades} and Pesek was sent out the door.

Trip Jacks for Selbst - 1:22 PM

We caught up with the action on the turn in a hand between Vanessa Selbst and Scott Bohlman. Action had been checked to Selbst and she bet out 4,200. Bohlman thought for a bit and then made the call.

The final board card was the {A-Hearts} and Bohlman checked again. Selbst took her time and then dropped a bet of 8,300 into the middle. Bohlman mulled over his decision for a bit and then finally made the call. Selbst turned up the {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for trip jacks and Bohlman mucked.

Smith Raised Out - 1:25 PM

On the flop of {9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{2-Hearts}, Full Tilt Red Pro Justin "BoostedJ" Smith fired out a bet of 8,500. His opponent was Salim Namat and he asked if Smith had him covered. Smith did in fact have Namat covered, but that didn't deter Namat from raising to 20,000. Smith mucked his hand immediately and dropped to 60,000 in chips.

Smith Takes One Out1:30 PM

Marc Emond moved all in from middle position for 7,600 and Chad Batista called from the cutoff. Justin Smith raised to about 24,000 from the small blind, successfully isolating the pot.

Smith: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}
Emond: {A-Diamonds}{2-Spades}

The board ran out {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{3-Hearts} and Emond’s day was done. Smith is back around to his starting stack of the day with 75,000.

Mercier Eliminated By Paredes - 1:35 PM

David Paredes raised to 2,400 before Jason Mercier reraised to 6,700. When action folded back over to Paredes, he made the call. The two of them saw the flop come down {6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and Paredes checked to Mercier, who fired 7,300. Paredes wanted to play for more and check-raised to 17,500. Mercier thought about it for a bit and then made the call.

The turn brought the {A-Hearts} and Paredes took another look at his hand. He then put out a bet worth 19,700. Mercier thought for some time and then made the call, having about 34,000 left after he called.

The river card completed the board with the {J-Clubs}. Paredes slid out a bunch of chips for a bet of 60,000. That was enough to put Mercier all in and after a bit of time in the tank, Mercier made the call. Paredes tabled the {3-Hearts}{3-Clubs} for a set of threes and Mercier mucked his hand. The rule is that all hands that have an all-in showdown must be shown so the dealer turned up Mercier's {A-}{4-} to show he had only a pair of aces when he made the call for his entire stack. Paredes scooped the pot and saw himself shoot up to just about the 200,000-chip mark.

We've covered Paredes a bunch of times now around the tournament circuit. The big splash he made was at the NAPT Venetian Main Event in Las Vegas back in February of 2010. He final tabled the event and finished in fifth place for nearly $185,000. Some of his other career highlights are finishes in the money in the 2007 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event, the 2009 L.A. Poker Classic, the 2010 EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo and the 2010 Bellagio Cup IV.

Paredes graduated from Harvard and NYU before working for a hedge fund company in New York where he is from. After moving to Boston with his girlfriend, Paredes transitioned to cash games in order to make his money. He doesn't do too bad in tournaments though, as you can see from the career highlights just listed. He has nearly $300,000 in career tournament winnings.

Brown Chipping Up1:41 PM

Chad Brown eliminated Kevin Manley after a flop {J-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{9-Hearts}. Manley shoved with {Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} and Brown looked him up with {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}, holding up through the {4-Hearts} turn card and {A-Spades} river card to up his stack to about 173,000.

Richey Arrives Late - 1:45 PM

Brett Richey came jogging into the tournament about 45 minutes late, but it wasn't his fault. The cab driver who was supposed to get him here drove 30 minutes in the wrong direction after claiming to know where he was going. After back tracking and eventually finding the right way, the cab ride took about two hours to finally get here.

Welcome back for Day 2 of the first $10,000 Regional Championship event of this season's World Series of Poker Circuit tour. A field of 226 players came out to the event that began yesterday and 114 of them moved on to Day 2. Leading them all was Ryan Julius with 265,000 chips. Some of the other names still remaining are Bernard Lee, Shannon Shorr, Vanessa Selbst, David Paredes, Dave "Doc" Sands, Chad Brown, Jason Mercier, Justin Smith and Brandon Adams. The player who won the Main Event here in Hammond was Kurt Jewell and he had a solid day on the felt as well, wrapping up with 58,000 chips after coming in nice and late so he could get some extra rest after playing until 4:30 a.m. the night before.

Play kicks off today at 1:00 p.m. and it should be a great day of poker. Be sure to stick right here on PokerNews for all the level recaps to update you on the action.
