Saul Chipping Up

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante

On a {4-Spades}{3-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} board, Kevin Saul was facing a bet of 2,000 in front of him. He made the call and the two players saw the {6-Hearts} hit the river. His opponent led for 4,000 this time. After some thought Saul put in 12,800 leaving only about 8,000 behind. His opponent mulled over his decision a bit before letting go of his hand. Saul raked in the pot, checked back at his cards and flipped one of them over, the {9-Clubs}.

Saul now has a slight grin to go with his 36,000 chips.

Big Pot, Bigger Draws

Four players went to a flop of {J-Spades} {3-Hearts} {10-Spades} and first to act bet out 1,200. The next player moved all in for a little over 10,000 and Derek Geise was next to act. Geise asked the original bettor how much he had, about 25,000, and Geise moved all in after some short consideration for almost 26,000.

The fourth player to act also moved all in with a stack just over 10,000. The original bettor shuffled his stack and then reluctantly folded. The hands were tabled:

Second to act: {K-Spades} {4-Spades}
Geise: {9-Spades} {8-Spades}
Fourth to act: {A-Spades} {Q-Spades}

With the deck seemingly running out of spades and all three players drawing to either a flush, straight or straight flush the original bettor left the table claiming he had the best hand.

The board finished {9-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} and Geise took the pot with a pair of nines and knocked out two players.

Kramer With a Sweat

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante

Ben Kramer raised to 600 in middle position before the player immediately to his left moved all in for 3,325 total. Action folded back around and in one motion Kramer put in the chips to call and flipped over his {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}. His opponent tabled {k-Spades}{j-Hearts} and began to collect his things.

However, the {q-Spades}{10-Clubs}{j-Clubs} flop slowed him down a bit. The turn {6-Spades} and river {6-Diamonds} weren't enough though and Kramer was shipped the pot. He now has 35,000 chips.

Schwartz Takes Giant Bite Out of Alvarez's Stack

We found this pot developing on the turn with a huge pot in the middle. The board read {9-Diamonds} {4-Clubs} {K-Clubs} {3-Diamonds}, Jason Schwartz checked and Danny Alvarez bet 9,000. Schwartz counted his stack and announced all in. Alvarez called and tabled {K-Spades} {10-Diamonds}, but Schwartz was ahead holding {K-Diamonds} {J-Hearts}.

The river cemented Schwartz's lead when it fell {J-Diamonds} and Alvarez was nearly felted.

Giving It Another Shot

Level 5 : 100/200, 25 ante

Last years runner-up, Kevin Calenzo, is back in today's field to try and and improve on his finish last year. Of course, there's only one way to do that and so far he is off to a good start.

We caught Calenzo betting 1,325 from the button on a board of {4-Spades}{10-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. One player called and the turn was the {6-Spades}. This time it was his opponent who led the action with a bet of 2,000. Calenzo called. The river was the {8-Spades} and again his opponent bet 2,000. Calenzo made the call again and his {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs} made a straight against the {6-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} of his opponent.

Calenzo now has 31,000 in chips.

A Lucky Attorney?! Watch Out!

Level 4 : 100/200, 0 ante

Bill Coyle, a 63-year old attorney, raised to 750 from the button after everyone in front of him had folded. The small blind made the call and the two saw a flop of {8-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} heads up.

The opponent led into Coyle for 1,000 and was called. The turn was the {9-Hearts} which slowed down the player first to act and allowed Coyle to bet 2,500. He was called and the river came down the {5-Hearts}. Coyle's opponent checked again allowing him to bet 3,500 this time. Coyle was called and tabled {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts}. He had turned the straight and rivered the flush which were enough to ship him the pot.

"I'm a 63-year old attorney getting lucky in the early stages," joked Coyle. It's bad enough to be at the same table with someone who is lucky, but an attorney too? The other players at his table might want to watch out for him as they proceed into the middle stages of Day 1a.
