Day 2 Reaches Final Table in the Closing Minutes

Level 23 : 7,000/14,000, 2,000 ante

After 14 hours of action, Day 2 of the WSOP Circuit Southern Indiana Main Event came to a close with the final table of ten players reached just seconds before the clock expired on the last level of the day. Play began with 170 players and Aaron Massey will return on Day 3 as the chipleader with 1.07 million.

Joining him at the final table are Mark “Pegasus” Smith (877,00), Bernard Lee (664,000), David Hengen (696,000), Robert Castoire (788,000), Jacob Bazely (844,000), Donovan Darland (561,000), Sameer Al Dbhany (433,000), Khang Luu (209,000) and Thang Nguyen (119,000).

Aaron Massey catapulted to the chiplead after spending most of the evening at the bottom of the counts. In the last hour of play he won a few key pots that gave him some wiggle room. But then with only minutes left on the clock he flopped a straight against Thang Nguyen and doubled up to 1.07 million.

Kevin Calenzo, who finished second in this event last year, fell just short of making back-to-back final tables. He was eliminated in 13th place. His {A-Clubs} {10-Diamonds} couldn’t catch up to Jacob Bazely’s pocket queens.

With such a large number of eliminations in one day, many notables did not survive. Kevin Saul, Chad Batista, Aaron Steury, Brian Yeager, Harold Dennis and Miguel Borrero were among those that fell.

Last year’s mark of 289 players was eclipsed with a total number of 313 entrants this time around. The prizepool improved as well, with first place taking home $107,022. Last year’s event came up just a few dollars short of a six-figure score.

The money bubble was a quick affair with two players busting only moments apart and hand for hand play wasn’t needed. Another key point in the tournament when the action was almost too fast to cover was when the field was reduced to two tables. Within five minutes, three players were eliminated before action slowed to crawl. The remaining 15 players all had decent stacks and dreams of making the final table so they took their time.

The final table will be underway at 1 p.m. EST and be sure to follow all the action live on Pokernews.com.

Massey Flops The Nuts And Gets Paid

We caught the action on a {q-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{j-Spades} flop contested between Thang Nguyen, in the small blind position, and Aaron Massey in the cutoff position.

Nguyen checked to Massey and he bet 38,000. After some thought, Nguyen announced that he was all in. Massey immediately called and tabled his hand, {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. Nguyen flipped over {j-Hearts}{10-Spades} and was in a lot of trouble. The turn and river were the {7-Clubs} and {7-Spades} which doubled Massey up.

Nguyen was crippled, but did earn some back the next hand when he pushed and stole the antes and blinds. Massey, on the other hand, is the first player to cross the one million chip mark.

Massey Rebuilding His Stack

Level 23 : 7,000/14,000, 2,000 ante

Aaron Massey opened for 31,000 on the button and Thang Nguyen called from the big blind. The flop came {7-Clubs} {K-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} and Nguyen check-called 36,000. Both players checked the {3-Spades} turn and the {9-Diamonds} fell on the river. After Nguyen checked Massey bet out 45,000. Nguyen called, then mucked when Massey turned over {K-Hearts} {10-Clubs}.

Massey is up to 400,000.

Calenzo Falls Short of Back-to-Back Final Tables

Kevin Calenzo was eliminated by Khang Luu but the damage was done by Jacob Bazely one hand prior. Calenzo and Bazely had an all in preflop showdown with Bazely holding pocket queens and Calenzo held {A-Clubs} {10-Diamonds}. The board ran {6-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {10-Spades} {Q-Hearts} Calenzo was left with only 8,000.

Calenzo threw it all in on the button and Luu's pocket nines ended his deep tournament run.

Parrish Finally Falls

Level 23 : 7,000/14,000, 2,000 ante

Jennifer Parrish has been below four big blinds for almost an hour. She doubled up a couple of times but never seemed to crack a maneuverable stack.

She announced that with 13,000 she was probably going all in dark. After Kevin Calenzo raised to 26,000 she was forced to look, but did commit her chips. David Hengen made the call from the small blind and two players were in the pot to take a shot to knock out Parrish.

The board ran out {6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{4-Spades}{k-Hearts} and both players with action checked down the whole way. Parrish flipped over {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} but came in last. Hengen had {a-Spades}{10-Spades} but it was the {k-Spades}{5-Clubs} of Calenzo that won it on the river.

Nguyen Knocks Out Another

Luis Reyes opened for 38,000 and Thang Nguyen called from the button. The flop came {9-Spades} {4-Spades} {A-Hearts} and Reyes bet 65,000. Nguyen studied Reyes and shoved all in. Reyes made the call and the hands were tabled.

Reyes: {A-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}
Nguyen: {9-Clubs} {9-Hearts}

Reyes needed help to suckout on Nguyen's set, but he whiffed when the board completed {8-Clubs} {2-Clubs}.
