Stanko Stands Tall as Day 2 Concludes

Level 21 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

Well, that's that for Day 2 of the WSOPC Council Bluffs Main Event. The day began with the 138 Day 1 survivors, plus another ten fresh faces hitting the felt late-reg style for the play down to the final table. It took more than fourteen hours, but just after the calendar hit Tuesday morning, the final hand was dealt out.

We'll let you read about all the action below, but suffice it to say that Scott Stanko carries the big stack into the overnight soak. He managed to bag up a whopping 1.481 million chips to put himself in the best position for tomorrow's finale. His count gives him just over 25% of the total chips in play. And there are still nine players left.

Joining Stanko at the final table will be a mixed bag of notables, pros, and amateurs that include a pair of men named Moore. One of them is Charles — better known as "Woody" around these parts — a regular on tour. He had quite the roller coaster of a day, but he finished on a strong note with 631,000 chips in his bag. Also still alive is Casey Cavanaugh, though his health was in some question early in the day. Not his tournament health — his actual health. The local bagged up the biggest stack of 196,000 on Day 1a, but he came to the felt sick with some stomach illness today.

He, um, forced the staff to call for a custodian at one point (if you get our drift), and he spent the rest of the day with a metal Miller Lite bucket in between his feet underneath the table. Just in case. Despite being barely functional from a medical standpoint, though, Cavanaugh fought off the early levels and managed to have quite a productive day. In the end, he worked it all the way up to 875,000, and that will put him in third place heading into the final table.

Speaking of that final table, here's how they'll be set up when play recommences:

1Charles Moore623,000
2Mark Bonsack283,000
3Stephen Ma928,000
4Pej Niyati875,000

6James Smith465,000
7Casey Cavanaugh745,000
8Scott Stanko1,481,000

Action gets under way at the friendly hour of 2:00pm local time tomorrow from the Horseshoe Council Bluffs, and we'll be back inside the ropes as we crown a champion.

Until then, goodnight!
