Aaron Massey was just involved in a hand at the end of the previous level with a single opponent. Post-hand conversation suggested he'd called a preflop raise, then the pair both checked after a flop. The turn brought the and a bet from Massey, called by his opponent.
The river was the . This time Massey bet 1,500 — about two-thirds the pot — and after a spell of contemplation his opponent called again. Massey quickly turned over his for a flopped set, and his opponent showed his for a second-best two pair.
With the board reading , Vinny Pahuja saw his river bet of 4,000 clicked back to 8,000. Pahuja quickly called and was shown a straight, , by his opponent.
Pahuja, though, tabled for a full house to take down the pot.
Kurt Jewell had slipped down to less than half the starting stack (20,000) by the first part of Level 2, but just now opened with a middle position raise in an effort to reverse the trend.
Jewell picked up three callers, and the four of them saw the flop come . Jewell fired a continuation bet of 400, and two of his opponents stuck around. The turn brought the and a bet of 1,050 from Jewell, and this time just one opponent called.
The river brought the , putting a third deuce on board, and this time Jewell promptly set out his remaining stack of about 6,500. His opponent tanked for some time before finally letting his hand go.
So said Aaron Massey just now as he arrived to his seat at Table 26. The comment was directed toward Jared Jaffe seated a few seats to his left, and was in reference to a hand from Event #7, the $1,000+$125 buy-in no-limit hold'em tournament that ended late last night.
"Ah, it happens," shrugged Jaffe, one of several the Chicagoan had knocked out during his deep run. "At least you used the chips, right?" "Almost!" grinned Massey, and Jaffe nodded at Massey's point.
Indeed, Massey made it all of the way to a second-place finish last night, finishing runner-up to James Gilbert of nearby Bensalem, Pennsylvania. Here are the results from that $1K event that drew 196 entrants:

Also making that final table was Yossi Azulay who finished sixth, which gave him enough points to catapult into first position currently on the WSOP-C National Leaderboard. Massey also picked up points with his finish, pushing into a tie for third at the moment. In addition to other qualifiers, players who earn enough points on the National Leaderboard will be able to buy-in to the National Championship in May 2013.
Here's what the top of the WSOP Circuit National Leaderboard looks like this morning as our event gets started:
Cards are in the air and the first flight of Day 1 has begun. Today will see both "Day 1a" and "Day 1b" play out, with each flight lasting for nine 40-minute levels. This is also a re-entry event, meaning if a player busts here during Day 1a, he or she can re-enter this evening for Day 1b.
It looks like a good-sized field has already started to develop. Back in a few to let you know who we are seeing among the players gathered around the tables.
