You Guys All Die on the Way Home, Alright?

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Will "The Thrill" Failla
Will "The Thrill" Failla

Will "The Thrill" Failla didn't play in the first starting flight, and things weren't going too well for here on Day 1b. The East Coast grinder expressed his interest in busting so he could re-enter at the start of Day 2, and his wish just came true.

It happened when Failla moved all in from middle position for 8,300 holding the {A-Spades}{2-Spades} and Jamey Kramer called him from the big blind with the {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}. "Give him a king," Failla told the dealer. The {2-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{9-Diamonds} flop failed to produce a king, as did the {J-Clubs} turn. Kramer would find no king on the river, but the {Q-Hearts} was just as good.

"There is a god," Failla exhaled before collecting his things and adding, "You guys all die on the way home, alright?" The rest of the players got a good laugh.

Liebert Leaves Us

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Kathy Liebert has been eliminated, her second bustout today. Down to about 18,000, Liebert was all in and at risk with {5-Clubs}{5-Hearts} and up against an opponent's {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}.

The flop came {10-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{3-Spades} to pair Liebert's opponent. The turn was the {2-Spades} which gave her some straight outs to survive, but the river was the {3-Diamonds} and Liebert's Day 1b came to an end.

Promoting Reason

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

Following a raise by Benjamin Reason, Bart Guthrie pushed all in for around 50,000 and when the action returned to Reason he called right away.

Guthrie had {A-}{J-} with no diamond while Reason had {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}. The flop came {7-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds} to give Guthrie aces, but the {Q-Diamonds} turn and {2-Diamonds} river added up to a winning flush for Reason and an elimination for Guthrie.

That had pushes Reason up over 145,000 — ahead of our end-of-Day-1a leader Eric Rando at the moment.

The Buck Stops Here

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

Did you know the dealer button in poker is also known as the "buck"? It's because players in the old days would use a deer antler to signify who was the dealer. As such, when you were passing the dealer button you were "passing the buck," which became synonymous with dodging responsibility. Another interesting fact is that U.S. President Harry S. Truman popularize the saying, "The buck stops here," as he had a sign with that saying hung in his office.

Anyway, the buck we're referencing in the title isn't the dealer button, it's a man named Buck Ramsay who just so happened to eliminated Aaron Massey.

It happened when Ramsay opened from early position and Massey, who was to his direct left, three-bet to 4,100. Action folded back to Ramsay, he four-bet it to 10,000, and Massey responded by moving all in for 33,300 more. When Ramsay asked for a count, a seemingly excited Massey shook his fist as if to say, "He didn't snap call!" Nonetheless, Ramsay made the call.

Ramsay: {J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}
Massey: {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}

Massey's enthusiasm quickly dissipated upon seeing that he was behind. "Good game," Massey said before shaking Ramsay's hand after the board had run out {q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{6-Spades}{7-Spades}. For the second time, Massey was eliminated from the tournament.

Schultz Sunk

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

Dean Schultz was just all in and at risk with {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} against the {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} of Ryan Mostafa. The board rolled out {J-Spades}{2-Spades}{3-Clubs}, then {A-Diamonds}, then {7-Spades}, and Schultz has been eliminated.

Meanwhile, Mostafa moves up over 85,000 after that one.

Lee and Jewell Done and Dusted

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

A short-stacked Bernard Lee moved all in preflop for around 4,300 and received a call from Charber Azzi, who was in the cutoff. The button and blind both folded and Lee tabled the {A-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}. Charber then rolled over the superior {A-Hearts}{6-Clubs}, though there was a decent chance of a chop.

The dealer burned and put out the flop—{3-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{A-Spades}. Both players had flopped two pair but Azzi was best. Lee immediately stood to make his exit, and after the {10-Hearts} appeared on the turn followed by the {2-Spades} on the river, he made it.

Meanwhile, Kurt Jewell joined Lee on the rail less than a minute later.

From the Hardwood to the Felt

Day 1b at Foxwoods Resort Casino
Day 1b at Foxwoods Resort Casino

Players are back in their seats and Level 10 is now underway, although it took some of them a few extra minutes to get back from that last break of the night.

That's because the exciting finish to the Michigan-Syracuse NCAA basketball semifinal had occupied attentions as cards went back in the air. There were a few shouts as Michigan prevailed, and now it looks as though everyone has settled in for the last three 40-minute levels of the night.
