Dipaoli Shoves the Turn

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

After a player in middle position had min-raised to 1,600 and Greg Raymer called from middle postion, action folded around to Matt Dipaoli in the small blind and he flatted. The big blind came along for the ride and four players took a flop of {9-Spades}{5-Hearts}{A-Spades}, which they all checked.

When the {Q-Diamonds} turned, Dipaoli led out for a modest 1,800 and was immediately met by a raise to 5,200 by the player in the big blind. The original raiser and Raymer both folded, and then Dipaoli took a moment before sliding his entire stack in the middle. It was 15,400 more to the big blind, but he thought better of it and sent his cards to the muck.

Saul Sliding

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

After losing a 55,000-chip pot in a {Q-}{Q-}-vs.{10-}{10-} hand when a ten fell on the river to give his opponent a winning set, Kevin Saul returned from the break to a stack of about 24,000. Now he's lost another chunk here at the start of Level 10 to slide further down to around 10,000.

In the latest hand, Saul and one other player had reached the river on a {J-Spades}{2-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} board and Saul's opponent bet 5,500 — less than half what was already in the middle. Saul made the call, then saw the bad news as his opponent tabled {Q-Spades}{10-Clubs}.

Smith Smarting After Andy's Aggression

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

We had an interesting hand over at Table 1 just before players went on that last break. It began with Andy Frankenberger opening from under the gun and getting two callers — Danny "Middleboro" Smith sitting to Frankenberger's left and the big blind.

There was about 5,000 in the middle when the flop came {2-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}. The big blind checked, then Frankenberger fired a small bet of 800. Smith made it 4,000 to go, and when the third player folded, Frankenberger hesitated for a bit then reraised to 10,500.

That sent Smith deep into the tank for about a minute. "If I show you a great fold, will you show?" he emerged to ask, but when Frankenberger offered no response Smith again sat in contemplation.

Finally Smith folded his hand, and indeed showed his cards — {2-Spades}{2-Clubs}! Frankenberger slid his cards face down to the dealer, collected the chips, and soon thereafter the break had come.

Smith and the others were still talking about the hand as Level 10 began, with the debate concerning whether or not Frankenberger could have had a better set, ace-king, or some sort of combo-draw.

In any event, the focus is now on what lies ahead, as the players are settling in for the last three 40-minute levels of Day 1a.

Day 1b is Underway

Level 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

Day 1b has kicked off on the other side of the room, and while we'll be focusing on the Day 1a flight until it's conclusion, we thought we'd fill you in on some of the notables who either re-entered or opted to buy-in for the first time.

Among those currently in action at the farside of the room are Kathy Liebert, Chris Tryba, Jamie Kerstetter, Ylon Schwartz, Mike Frazin ad Bobby Corcione. We'll provide you periodic updates from that field, and once Day 1a comes to a close around 7:30 p.m. EST, we'll finish off the night with the Day 1b field.

Don't Rain On Paredes

Level 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

After a middle-position raise to 1,650, the button called and David Paredes called as well from the big blind. The flop came {J-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, and it checked around to the player on the button who fired 3,600. Only Paredes called. The turn then brought the {5-Clubs}. Paredes checked, his opponent bet 5,500, and Paredes called.

The river was the {6-Spades}, and this time both players checked. Paredes's opponent tabled {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} for queens and sixes, and it was good enough as Paredes mucked.

Pechie Peachy Amid Travell's Travails

Level 9 : 300/600, 75 ante

With the board showing {6-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{10-Clubs}{A-Spades} and a multicolored mass of chips surrounding the five board cards, Justin Pechie fired a bet of 9,000 and an exasperated Travell Thomas made the call.

Pechie then tabled his hand — {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} for a set of fives — and Thomas shook his head as he mucked, explaining how he'd had two pair.

That big pot boosts the one-time WSOP bracelet winner Pechie up over 80,000 while Thomas slips back down below 15,000.
