Flop Hits Frankenberger, Sends Smith Railward

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

Andy Frankenberger opened with a raise to 2,500 from under the gun, Danny "Middleboro" Smith called from a seat over, then it folded back around. The flop came {10-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{K-Clubs} and when Frankenberger led with a bet of 2,500, Smith announced he was raising all in and Frankenberger called right away.

Smith tabled {K-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} for two pair, then caught sight of Frankenberger's hand — {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}!

"Ohhh," said Smith with a wide grin as he saw Frankenberger had flopped the straight. The turn was the {4-Diamonds} and river the {6-Spades}, and Smith had been eliminated.

Smith stuck around for a while, though, to chat with Frankenberger about that hand at the start of Level 10 in which Smith had folded bottom set on the flop after a Frankenberger reraise.

"It was a good fold?" asked Smith. "It was an amazing fold," answered Frankenberger, and while we didn't catch details of what exactly Frankenberger had, the pair broke it down for a couple of minutes more before Smith wished the table good luck and departed.

Big Gaines

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Erek Gaines
Erek Gaines

As the last level of Day 1a plays out, we've been scouting the field looking for big stacks, at at the moment Erek Gaines appears to be sporting one of the biggest on this side of the room.

Gaines hasn't been getting involved in too many pots here during Level 12, and when he does open with raises before the flop his tablemates haven't shown too much interest getting involved with him. The player from Maine is now sitting with a stack north of 170,000.

Kessler Destroys Donovan

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Zachary Donovan
Zachary Donovan

Zachary Donovan, who won Event #1 here at Foxwoods, was just eliminated from the tournament courtesy of Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler.

It happened when Kessler opened for 2,500 from the hijack and the player in the cutoff called. Donovan then moved all in from the button for 10,700, the blinds folded, and Kessler made a quick call. The cutoff took his time before folding and the cards were turned up.

Donovan: {A-Spades}{10-Spades}
Kessler: {A-Hearts}{J-Clubs}

Kessler had Donovan outkicked, and according to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, he was a 64.50% favorite to win the hand. The {4-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} flop saw that increase to 79.19%, while the {5-Diamonds} turn left Donovan, who only had a 6.82% chance of surviving, ask for a three to chop. Unfortunately for him, the dealer did not oblige and he was eliminated from the tournament in Level 11.

Back from the Other Side

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Reporting back from a quick tour of the other side of the room where the early levels of the Day 1b flight are playing out. The big board over there is showing 163 entries thus far for the second flight of the night, a few of whom are back after busting earlier today while others are here for the first time.

Here are a few counts from the Day 1b crowd as they cross the midway point of Level 3. We'll be picking up with the reports for them once the last level-and-a-half of Day 1a finishes out.

Saul Survivor

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

As if in imitation of his nickname, the fortunes of Kevin "BeL0WaB0Ve" Saul have reversed as he just scored a nice double-up to push back to around 70,000.

Saul had slipped below the starting stack a short while ago after a couple of unfortunate hands. But now he's risen back above where he was before after the big, recent double.

We arrived in time for the counting of chips as the board showed {2-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{10-Spades}{6-Clubs}{10-Hearts}, Saul held {2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} (full house), and his opponent {Q-Hearts}{8-Hearts} (flush).

Hesse Hoses Stepanski

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

After a player in the cutoff opened, Stephen Hesse three-bet from the small blind. Keith Stepanski proceeded to move all in from the big for roughly 15,000, the cutoff folded, and Hesse made the call.

Hesse: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}
Stepanski: {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}

It was a bad spot for Stepanski, and he was left wanting as the board ran out a dull {2-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. With that, Hesse eliminated a tough opponent and chipped up to 60,000.
