Beckstead Flops Quads

Level 7 : 200/400, 50 ante

Thomas Beckstead called an all-in bet of 6,600 pre-flop holding {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds} and was up against {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}. Amazingly, the {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{6-Spades} peeled off on the flop to send his opponent home and that lowered the Day 1a field to 189 players.

Day 1b About to Begin

Level 7 : 200/400, 50 ante

Both Days 1a and 1b will play out today, and the latter is about to begin. The 5 p.m. CST start time means that the two fields will overlap. Some news players as well as those who've opted to re-enter from the Day 1a flight are beginning to take their seats, and while we'll certainly include some updates from that tournament's early action, we'll be focusing primarily on the Day 1a field until it's completion.

Masek Not Yet Able to Get Things Going.

Level 7 : 200/400, 50 ante

Over on Table 26, Alex Masek, the all-time WSOP ring leader, bet 1,675 on a flop consisting of {k-Spades}{5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. His opponent made the call, but after the {5-Spades} hit the board on the turn, Masek, after betting 3,500, was faced with an all-in reraise. He begrudgingly folded his hand, and that brought his chip count down to 18,000.

Re-entry events at every stop tend to be among the most successful, and the WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Council Bluffs Event #3 $365 NLHE Re-Entry was no different. A robust 562 entries accounted for a $168,600 prize pool, and $35,397 of that was reserved for the eventual winner—21-year-old Zach Smith of Glenwood, Iowa.

“I’ve only played two Circuit events ever, so this is awesome,” Smith said after his win. Apart-time student and a cell phone sales representative with pro aspirations, Smith defeated a tough field that included Stephen Kats (40th), Brett Schwertley (37th), Jose Serratos (33rd), Scott Stanko (18th), William Byrnes (9th), Jessie Bryant (7th) and Kat Bowen (4th). Interestingly, WSOP Circuit ring-winner Bowen was one of only six women to qualify for last year’s WSOP National Championship.

Engel Doubles With Flush

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante

We picked up the action on this hand as Ari Engel reraised his opponent to 4,500 on a flop that read {9-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. His opponent went all in for 25,500 more, and Engel called off holding the {9-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. He was up against the {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}. The turn {2-Hearts} was no help, but the {q-Clubs} on the river made his flush and skyrocketed his chip count to 80,000.

Headley Wins Three-Way All In

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante

After hearing a whoop of excitement, we scampered over to Table 40 to see three hands face up and a lot of chips in the middle of the felt. The board read {10-Spades}{9-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{3-Spades}, and the players had shipped all the chips in on the flop. Logan Headley's {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} had rivered a boat, though he had the lead on the flop against his opponents' {7-Hearts}{7-Spades} and {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. He now sits with around 57,000 in front of him, while the player with sevens survived with 15,000 left from the side pot.
