Rodrigues Surges to WSOPC Rotterdam Main Event Day 1a Chip Lead After Late Night Gamble

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Marco Rodrigues
Marco Rodrigues

On the first of three starting days of the €1,650 WSOP International Circuit Rotterdam Main Event, exactly half of the field made it to Day 2 after eight 60-minute levels. 52 players showed up for the first starting day and 26 of them made it through, with Marco Rodrigues bagging the overnight chip lead with 128,000 in chips.

Rodrigues was seated at the action table, which saw some crazy plays throughout the day. The catalyst was Marcel Goldenbelt, whose aggressive play in the early stages forced the other table mates to ramp up their aggression level as well. Rodrigues was the first to take on Goldenbelt, setting the tone by three-bet shoving a mere jack-deuce on the river on a board containing two aces, a completed flush and just a single deuce.

However, it was a crazy hand during the final few hands of the night that propelled Rodrigues to the overnight lead. With the blinds at 300/600, Paul Berende limped in, as did Malaysia's Jin Yong and Goldenbelt. Rodrigues made it 10,000 to go and, after announcing "gamble", called off a limp-shove from Berende for 100 big blinds total, holding just pocket deuces. Berende held the superior hand with pocket tens but a deuce on both the flop and turn shipped the massive pot over towards Rodrigues.

Other top stacks after the first day were bagged by Zeus Post (104,000), Jacco van Hooren (103,500), Govert Metaal (89,900), and Jasper van Moorsel (84,600). Metaal exercised his reentry option and fared much better on his second attempt. The aforementioned Goldenbelt sits in sixth place with 82,800, while Berende still bagged 69,600 after the sizable beat. Hakim Zoufri (65,700), Farukh Tach (50,100), and James Romero (23,000) also advanced to Day 2.

For WSOP bracelet winner Albert Hoekendijk, who lasted just 15 minutes after late registering, Kees van Brugge, Sander van Wesemael, Bartel Kars, Teun Kooij, and Robert Auer, Day 1a ended without finding a bag.

On Wednesday at 1 p.m., Day 1b will commence with another eight levels of 60 minutes each to be played. At 9 p.m., a turbo Day 1c with shortened levels kicks off to give players another shot to advance in this tournament. The eventual winner of the coveted WSOP Circuit ring will be crowned on Saturday, September 2. Follow along with PokerNews for all the live updates from the second-ever WSOP Circuit event in Holland Casino Rotterdam.

"No Gamble, No Future"

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Marco Rodrigues

In one of the final hands of the day, it was Paul Berende who limped in for 600 at a table that has seen crazy action all day. Jin Yong and Marcel Goldenbelt also limped along before Marco Rodrigues made it 10,000 straight. Back on Berende, he limp-reraised and slid a large tower of T-5,000 chips forward.

Yong and Goldenbelt quickly got out of the way but Rodrigues had a different plan.

"Gamble." he said, determined, and instantly flicked in a calling chip. The call was for his entire stack of 59,025.

Marco Rodrigues: {2-Hearts}{2-Spades}
Paul Berende: {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}

Berende was in a commanding spot to claim a massive overnight chip lead but fate would tell a different story as the flop came {5-Hearts}{8-Spades}{2-Clubs}. The "oohs", "aahs" and "that's so sick" at the table increased in volume as the dealer revealed the {2-Diamonds} on the turn to give Rodrigues quads, making the {A-Diamonds} river inconsequential.

"It's a Chinese thing," Yong lectured after the hand. "No gamble, no future!"

Stepanian Flushed Out by Metaal

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Wladimir Stepanian
Wladimir Stepanian

Wladimir Stepanian opened in early position and Govert Metaal defended his big blind. The flop brought {2-Spades}{3-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and Stepanian continued for 1,600. Metaal check-raised to 4,000, Stepanian three-bet shoved around 22,000 and Metaal called it off after some thought.

Wladimir Stepanian: {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}
Govert Metaal: {9-Clubs}{4-Clubs}

The turn was the {8-Clubs}, giving Stepanian a set but completing Metaal's flush draw. The {A-Spades} on the river didn't pair the board and Stepanian hit the rail with much dismay.

Goldenbelt Having Fun With Berende

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Paul Berende (at an earlier event)
Paul Berende (at an earlier event)

Over at table 21, Paul Berende has trended upwards to over the 100k mark and was involved in a hand against Marcel Goldenbelt. With the board completed at {J-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, it was Goldenbelt who casually flicked in 15,000, twice the size of the pot.

"Ahh, why don't you bet a normal size man. Always the two times pot," Berende grumbled, albeit with a smile on his face. He considered Goldenbelt's range of hands, considering ace-jack a possibility, then folded his hand.

"Was it exactly ace-jack?" Berende pleaded, but Goldenbelt didn't show.

"We're going to do this more often," Goldenbelt laughed as he raked in the pot.

Hoekendijk Quickly Busts

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Albert Hoekendijk
Albert Hoekendijk

It was a short affair for Hoekendijk, whose tournament came to an end just fifteen minutes after he entered. Hoekendijk already parted with more than two-thirds of his stack before the hand and his remaining chips subsequently went in.

In his final hand, Hoekendijk had called a three-bet out of position and was left with crumbs, which went in on an {A-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} flop.

"You probably have better," he said, and Tabak indeed did.

Albert Hoekendijk: {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs}
Erik Tabak: {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}

The turn brought the {6-Clubs} and Hoekendijk jumped up and called for a seven. The river was close but the {8-Hearts} wasn't what Hoekendijk needed and he went as quickly as he came.

"I had to wait for my money," Hoekendijk said, perhaps as an excuse for busting so fast. He went back to the finale table he busted from earlier to wait for his cash prize (3rd in the High Roller for €17,693) to be awarded.

"Why don't you play some roulette instead?" Kees van Brugge snidely remarked.

Metaal "Plays Like A Goat"

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Govert Metaal
Govert Metaal

Left without chips, Govert Metaal went off to the reentry desk to buy himself back in.

"I played like a goat!" he laughed when we approached him, most likely not referring to the all-capital acronym. "I had ace-eight of clubs and a guy [Alex de Meijer] three-bet me. I had just 8,000; I can't really call so, well, I called," the Monaco resident said, grinning.

"So the flop comes ace-eight-jack and he checks behind. The turn is a ten, I bet 3,000 with 1,600 behind and he calls. On the river, the rest went in and he had ten-ten," Metaal heartily laughed. He will be back for his second attempt shortly.

Goldenbelt Snipes Tabak and Kars

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Marcel Goldenbelt
Marcel Goldenbelt

Bartel Kars opened to 550 on the button and Erik Tabak called from the small blind. Marcel Goldenbelt three-bet to 2,200 from the big blind, Kars four-bet to 6,550, Tabak called all in for about 2,500 and Goldenbelt called as well.

The flop was {K-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{3-Hearts} and Goldenbelt checked. Kars bet 4,000, Goldenbelt check-raised all in and Kars called the shove for around 15,000 total.

Bartel Kars: {A-}{K-}
Erik Tabak: {J-}{10-}
Marcel Goldenbelt: {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}

Goldenbelt had outflopped Kars and found himself in a great spot to knock both players out. The turn {10-} and river {K-} didn't help either Tabak or Kars and they both went to the rail. They'll have the option to do a reentry on Day 1a up until the end of level 6.

Day 1a of the WSOPC Holland Casino €1,650 Main Event Starts at 3 p.m.!

The colorful Eyal Bensimhon is the reigning champion in Rotterdam
The colorful Eyal Bensimhon is the reigning champion in Rotterdam

It's time for the Main Event! The World Series of Poker International Circuit Rotterdam €1,650 Main Event, held in the stunning and renovated Holland Casino Rotterdam, will kick off it's first of three starting days at 3 p.m. local time. It's the second time the WSOP has set up shop in The Netherlands, and the iconic brand has been welcomed back to Holland's second largest city with open arms. To illustrate: this past weekend, the €275 Cup broke the record for largest ever-tournament held on Dutch soil with 529 entries. Local player Toan Nguyen collected the first WSOP Circuit Ring up for grabs and won €27,012.

Last year, Eyal Bensimhon (playing under the name Ben Bensimhon) conquered Rotterdam's inaugural WSOP Circuit Main Event for €94,394 ($112,709). Bensimhon, draped in his trusted pink bunny hood, reigned victorious on a final table that contained the likes of Bart Lybaert, Paul Gresel, and Govert Metaal. Over the course of the next two days and three starting flights, a bumper field is expected to dethrone Bensimhon, who will not be in attendance this year.

Two-time bracelet winner Mark Radoja from Canada, 2018 WSOP bracelet winner Ronald Keijzer, Jack Salter, and the man who won over €750,000 in Barcelona the past week, Rotterdam's very own Joris Ruijs, are among those that will take a seat in Rotterdam. The winner will be crowned on Saturday, September 8.

Levels are 60 minutes throughout the day on Day 1a and all players receive 30,000 points each in their quest for WSOP Circuit glory. Eight levels in total will be played, with a dinner break after level 4. Reentries are allowed and can be made during the first six levels of the day. PokerNews will be on the floor from start to finish to cover this iconic event in The Netherlands! Concurrent to the Main Event, the €3,500 High Roller will play down to a winner today and updates can be found here.
