Rock and Alsup Go to War

Level 8 : 300/600, 600 ante
Ben Rock
Ben Rock

Ben Rock (under-the-gun) and Rich Alsup (next-to-act) got into a preflop raising war that saw both players invest 12,500 to see a {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades} flop.

Rock led out for 15,000, and Alsup folded, showing at least an {a-} as he did.

"Kings?" Alsup asked Rock.

Rock showed {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a flush draw, and told Alsup, "You keep three-betting me!"

Wazwaz Sets Himself Up For a Triple

Level 8 : 300/600, 600 ante
Rob Wazwaz
Rob Wazwaz

Henry Zou checked a {j-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop from the small blind, and the big blind jammed for 16,300. Rob Wazwaz called off his last 15,700 from under the gun, and Blake Battaglia thought for a minute before calling to put both players at risk. Zou folded and the hands were tabled.

Rob Wazwaz: {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}
Opponent: {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}
Blake Battaglia: {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

Wazwaz looked to be in good shape to triple up, but the {9-Hearts} turn gave Battaglia a flush draw. The {8-Diamonds} river bricked off, and Wazwaz said, "Oh, I didn't even see the flush draw!" before scooping in the huge triple, while both the big blind and Battaglia were left on fumes.

Bryant's Got a Giant Stack

Level 8 : 300/600, 600 ante
Jill Bryant
Jill Bryant

A preflop raising war saw the small blind get in his last 38,600, Jill Bryant jam over the top from the hijack, and Ben Wiora fold what he later claimed to be {j-}{j-}.

Opponent: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Jill Bryant: {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}

Bryant's tens picked up a flush draw on the {4-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{5-Clubs} flop, and she left her opponent dead to a chop on the {7-Clubs} turn. The {5-Spades} river confirmed the KO of the small blind, and Bryant continues to crush her way through Day 1b.

Massey Vanquished by Big Slick

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante
Ralph Massey in Day 1a action
Ralph Massey in Day 1a action

After limps from Paul Elfelt under the gun and Michael Moncek in the cutoff, Ralph Massey, who just lost a big portion of his stack after his kings were cracked by ace-king, jammed for 15,200. Elfelt shoved over the top for slightly more, and Moncek folded.

Ralph Massey: {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}
Paul Elfelt: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

Massey looked like he would get a bit of revenge against Big Slick after the {9-Spades}{5-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} flop and turn, but the {a-Clubs} river left Massey quickly heading for the exit, while Elfelt scored the KO.

Danny Dombrowski
Danny Dombrowski

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team is in Milwaukee to live report action the $1,700 Main Event but is just one of a dozen gold ring events at the stop. As such, we thought we’d profile some of the preliminary tournaments and those who struck it big.

In Event #5: $250 No-Limit Hold’em Multi-Flight, 259 runners created a $51,800 prize pool that was paid out to the top 37 players including Melissa Bryne (16th - $734), David Larson (21st - $505), Chad Graves (26th - $438), Ken Baime (31st - $391), and Richard Pavlat (37th - $34$).

In the end, it was 34-year-old Danny Dombrowski of Milwaukee, Wisconsin finishing as the last player standing for $11,652 and his first ring.

“I know how poker tournaments go,” Dombrowski said after the win. “You need to win anytime you can and it feels great to get this first win under my belt here at my home casino.”

Dombrowski managed to overcome a huge chip disadvantage after a three-hour heads-up match to capture the title.

“I was down to crumbs.” Dombrowski explained. “But this is my home casino. You can’t ever give up. All my friends are here so it’s nice to have the support.”

He added: “The support was truly amazing. I have so many friends that have rings and it feels great that I can join them as ring winners, shout out to the Big Rippers Crew … This is huge accomplishment and I just want to say thank you to my parents who passed away. They were always supportive of me playing poker so I know they would be proud.”

Wester Sends Peebles Packing

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante
Thomas Peebles
Thomas Peebles

Thomas Peebles got his last 7,000 in chips in from the big blind, and was at risk against Jerry Wester from under the gun.

Thomas Peebles: {k-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}
Jerry Wester: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

The {2-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} flop was a dud for Peebles, but he added a few additional outs on the {5-Clubs} turn. The {4-Diamonds} river failed to improve Peebles further, and he hit the rail.

Ditrapani Rising, Brinn Falls

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante

Alan Cutler raised to 1,800 from early position, and the cutoff called. Nicola Ditrapani three-bet to 8,800 from the small blind, and Cutler thought for a moment, then folded, saying, "Just because I know how to fold, doesn't mean I like doing it...and I won't be doing it again!" The cutoff called after a few moments in the tank.

Ditrapani bet 7,000 on the {8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{8-Spades} flop, and the cutoff folded fairly quickly.

At the same time, Cody Brinn was seen heading towards the exit, telling some friends, "See ya," as he walked out, and his former seat is devoid of chips.

Bryant Busts Wester in Massive Flip

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante

Jerry Wester raised to 4,000 from middle position, and Jill Bryant three-bet to 12,000 from the hijack. Action folded back to Wester, who four-bet shoved for around 75,000, and Bryant quickly called.

Jerry Wester: {j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}
Jill Bryant: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

"C'mon, man!" Wester said after the {3-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{a-Spades} flop gave Bryant top pair and left Wester, who started the day with a triple up, in danger of busting just before the dinner break. The {5-Hearts} turn and {6-Clubs} river bricked off, and Bryant busted the one-time chip leader.
