Here's a hand that explains a lot about Omaha Hi-Lo. Two shortstacks ended up with all the money in the middle. The board plays out and the river gives one player a straight and the other the low. Even though they halve the pot both players let out an agonized groan, forgetting for a moment that they might've been knocked out or crippled instead. In split-pot games the glass is half-empty, never half-filled.
Down to his last few chips, Denis Ethier was forced to commit all his chips with 2-2-3-4 and found himself up against Jeff Calkins' A-A-3-4. There was no qualifiying low and Calkins flopped a set of Aces that brought an end to Ethier's tournament
Tables, that is. We have eighteen players left and we'll be playing down to nine. Here are the most recent bustouts, in the order they were eliminated:
26th: Rob Hollink
25th: Dale Pinchot
24th: Tom Chambers
23rd: Ruben Vera
22nd: Kirk Loberman
21st: Josh Mammon
20th: Todd Brunson
19th: Fran Pinchot
After John Varner showed down a pair of aces on a board that didn't provide for a low hand, Rich Zhu looked long and hard at the board trying to figure out if he might have a way to beat those aces. He peeked again at his cards, tilted his head, looked over the board, thought about it some more. Finally, when the dealer volunteered to help him figure out what he had if he'd flip over his cards, Zhu grinned, shrugged his shoulders, and tossed his cards in the muck.
