Hayden Has Had It

Melissa Hayden, Jeff Williams
Melissa Hayden, Jeff Williams
Melissa Hayden has bitten the tournament dust, pushing for 700 preflop with A-Q but smacking into the big blind's aces. The Q-5-2-J-10 board wasn't good enough, and she is OUT.

Meanwhile, youthful 2006 EPT Grand Final winner Jeff Wiliams is faring rather better, having worked his way up to a stack of 6,300.

Hell for He11muth

He11muth, holding it in
He11muth, holding it in
Phil He11muth, who strode in only recently, is already nearing the felt after taking his seat next to Humberto Brenes.

After seeing his stack bisected in half after his top pair lost to a straight on the river, He11muth then dropped down to less than 1,000 in chips when his {Q-Clubs}{9-Clubs} failed to improve against {K-Clubs}{10-Clubs} on a {J-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{2-Spades}{2-Clubs} board.

Down, but not out, He11muth shook his head after those defeats, but refrained from any 'Poker Brat' rants that have made him such a renowned and highly entertaining personality within the poker community.

A Laak of Chips

As I have regaled you on many a previous occasion, the Amazon Room is brimming with different takes on the world of fashion, and one Mr Darren Rice in particular is no exception, having caught the glare of many a passing eye.

Of course, it's unpleasant to single people out, but with an online alias of 'ultimullet', I'm sure Rice would embrace the attention with open arms. Sadly, we don't yet have a picture of his quite spectacular mullet, but as soon as we do, we'll happily share the glorious view with you.

On this occasion, however, it wasn't just the hairstyle of Rice that grabbed our attention, but also his elimination of Phil Laak. Raising it up to 225 preflop, Rice was called by one opponent a couple of seats down before being reraised to 1,775 by Laak in the cutoff.

Rice set his opponent all in for the few hundred he had left, and Laak, naturally, made the call.

Laak = {A-?}{K-?}
Rice = {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}

board = {6-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{4-Clubs}{10-Hearts}

Whilst Laak shared his woes with partner Jennifer Tilly, one of our favourite players (I should remain unbiased, but the hair is awesome!) raked in the pot for a nice early double-through.

Ivey Eliminated

Massage can't help him now
Massage can't help him now
Phil Ivey somehow found himself pretty short , and calling 700 preflop with {J-Spades} {9-Diamonds}. His opponent put him in for his last 200 on the {3-Clubs} {9-Spades} {10-Diamonds} flop, and Ivey called, but his opponent was holding {Q-Hearts} {Q-Clubs} and Ivey failed to improve.

Also OUT is Sirous Jamshidi, and over on the tables by the casino, TJ Cloutier has also busted.

Steam Tran

right back at ya, cowboy
right back at ya, cowboy
With just 3,000 in starting chips, some players have decided against sitting patiently and waiting for hands, including JC Tran who just pushed over the top of Kenna James' 250 preflop raise for a total of 3,300 before proudly revealing pocket ducks.

"Don't do that again," threatened the ever-chatty, but highly entertaining James. "I will race you."

"It's difficult to make a pair in this game," added Tran, echoing word for word a line that James had thrown at the table earlier in the day.

Blinds Still Small, Stacks Still Large

Those early exits are, we suspect, the exception to the rule. Largely we expect the action to be pretty slow for the first few levels, rising to a crescendo of frenzied bust-outs a few hours from now when the blinds get really big.

Until then, other notable names still on roughly their 3,000 starting stack include Bill Chen, Daniel Negreanu, Hoyt Corkins, Humberto Brenes, EPT champs Arnaud Mattern and Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier representing for France, and Phil Ivey.
