A Bad Week Gets Worse

Jerry Buss eliminated
Jerry Buss eliminated
It's been a tough week for L.A. Lakers owner Jerry Buss. First, his team was eliminated from the NBA Finals in an embarassing 131-92 loss. Then, Buss survived to Day 2 of Event #35 - $1,500 Seven Card Stud, only to be eliminated less than three tables from the money. Buss made a pair of kings on fourth street, and decided to go to the river with them. His opponent, Kobie West, started with buried aces and made aces and queens. Buss never improved on his kings and has been eliminated from the tournament.

Jett Flush With Chips

Chip Jett started four to a spade flush by fourth street. His opponent, Stefan Rapp, started with split queens and by sixth street made two pair, queens and tens, and was also four to a royal flush in hearts. Rapp missed on the river, pulling the {4-Clubs}; Jett hit, pulling his fifth spade. That pot pushed Jett up to 49,000 in chips.

Thater Eliminated

With her chip stack dwindling, Katja Thater completed third street with the {J-Hearts} as her door card. She was called by a {Q-Diamonds} and by Craig Thomson, who had brought it in with the {2-Diamonds}. On fourth street, Thater caught the {Q-Spades}, her first opponent caught the {8-Clubs}, and Thomson paired deuces. The bring-in checked to Thater, who bet her last 400.

One opponent folded, but Thomson, with paired deuces, called the all-in for only 400 with no other player left to act. They opened their hands:

Thater: {J-Clubs} {6-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} {Q-Spades}
Thomson: {K-Spades} {2-Hearts} {2-Diamonds} {2-Spades}

Thater caught running fours on fifth and sixth streets to make two pair. Thomson, who had caught a king on fifth street to make deuces full of kings, remarked, "You could still make a full house." Thater squeezed her river and saw the {J-Spades} for a full house, jacks full of fours. Thomson then squeezed his own river, and flipped over the {K-Hearts} for a bigger full house, kings full of deuces.

Voertmann Rides Out

Jens Voertmann, the 2008 $3,000 HORSE bracelet winner, has just been knocked out by Chris McIntyre.

Voertmann had {A-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} {10-Diamonds} showing against McIntyre's {10-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} when all the chips were pushed in.

The hole cards were turned and Voertmann had {4-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} and McIntyre {A-Hearts} {Q-Hearts}.

4th street brought Voertmann the {9-Diamonds} and McIntyre the {2-Diamonds} and Voertmann was facing elimination. The river brought no help to Voertmann and McIntyre's queens won the pot.

A Tough Beat for Landrum

It was a tough hand for Sabyl Landrum. On fourth street, she bet x-x / {10-Diamonds} {10-Clubs} then called when Chad Brown raised {9-Spades} {8-Diamonds}. She check-called the rest of the way, her board coming {A-Spades} {8-Spades} to Brown's {9-Clubs} {K-Spades}. She check-called on the river as well. Brown opened {K-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} {A-Hearts} in the hole, for a full house, kings full of nines, that he seemed to have made on sixth street. Landrum flashed the {A-Diamonds}, showing that she had made aces up on fifth street, then mucked.

Brown is up to almost 33,000 in chips.

Thater Crippled

Katja Thater has been crippled by Phyllis Meyers and her club flush.

Thater's hand read X-X / {A-Hearts} {9-Clubs} {7-Clubs} {5-Spades} / X. She had {K-Spades} {K-Hearts} {A-Clubs} in the hole for aces up.

Meyers showed {10-Clubs} {6-Clubs}/ {8-Clubs} {5-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} {A-Spades} / {4-Clubs} and took down the pot, leaving Thater with only 1000 in chips.

Jerry Buss Eliminates Ralph Perry

Ralph Perry had a quick Day 2. He was all in on third street against Jerry Buss. Buss started with three spades: {A-Spades} {9-Spades} / {3-Spades} and drew into two pairs, nines and fours, by the river. Perry never exposed his full hand. He showed a board of {10-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} {5-Hearts}, peeked at his down cards, and mucked. He is out of the tournament.

Buss is up to 15,000.

Kalpakis Rolled Up

Rolled up fours must have looked pretty good to Danny Kalpakis. They must have looked even better when fourth street and fifth street both came aces to make him a full house. He got Alan Zarka, showing a board of x-x / {10-Hearts} {J-Spades} {9-Hearts} {Q-Spades}, to call his bets on every street to the river. Kalpakis' full house was best.

Full Nelson

Mike Nelson took a monster pot away from Katja Thater and Alan Zarka. The trip had at least one bet on every street and all three stayed until 7th street building a monster pot.

Nelson tabled a straight and stacked the pot, bringing his chip count to 25,000.
