Recent Eliminations

Jeff Madsen, Sam Farha, Daniel Negreanu, Mike Matusow, Brandon Adams and Gavin Smith have all been eliminated from the tournament in the last ten minutes. Madsen was all in with trip threes and a nut flush draw against Rob Hollink's small full house, which held; Farha was all in preflop with naked kings against an opponent's single-suited aces and did not improve.

Daniel Negreanu went out in the most painful fashion of all of them. He got his whole stack in against one opponent on a board of {9-Spades} {J-Spades} {2-Clubs}. Negreanu tabled {Q-Spades} {7-Spades} {10-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} for a flush draw and a wrap straight draw; his opponent showed {J-Diamonds} {10-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {3-Clubs} for two pair, jacks and nines. Negreanu missed everything when the turn and river came {3-Hearts} {A-Clubs}.

Tens and Eights No Good?

We pick up a hand on the river between Amnon Filippi and Lee Markholt. The board reads {4-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} {10-Spades} {8-Spades} {4-Hearts}. With the action on him, Filippi makes a pot-sized bet of 8,000. This sends Markholt into the tank, muttering to himself, "I can beat tens and eights."

Filippi joins in, "You can beat tens and eights and you haven't called yet?"

Markholt eventually folds, and Arturo Diaz tells Amnon, "That's a nice bluff." Kido Pham is also watching the hand, and he implores, "Don't show, don't show." Filippi does show two of his cards only: {Q-?} {J-?}. Regardless, he gets to pull in the pot without having to show the other two.

Set Over Set Nets Filippi A Stack

Amnon Filippi bet pot on an {A-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} {3-Clubs} flop. He was called by one player, the button. On the turn of {8-Hearts}, Filippi bet 4,000, then called after his opponent raised all in to over 10,000.

Filippi: {10-Diamonds} {A-Hearts} {4-Spades} {10-Clubs}
Opponent: {2-Hearts} {3-Diamonds} {A-Clubs} {3-Hearts}

Each player had flopped a set, with Filippi having the higher set. However, his opponent had some life with a baby flush draw. It missed when the {J-Clubs} hit the river.

Filippi eliminated his opponent on the hand and increased his stack to 40,000.

Chainsaw Jams

Allen Kessler has exercised his option to rebuy. He bet 3,000 on a flop of {A-Clubs} {J-Clubs} {3-Clubs} against Dario Alioto, who made the call to see a turn of {6-Clubs}. Kessler checked to Alioto, who bet enough to put Kessler all in. Kessler called with {A-?}{A-?}XX, but couldn't fill up on the river. Alioto's {10-Clubs}{4-Clubs}XX made a flush to win the pot.

Kessler was not eliminated on the hand. Instead, he used his red rebuy chip to restore his stack to 10,000.

Benyamine Busto

There will be no gold bracelet for David Benyamine in today's event. He is out after he and Chau Giang called a preflop raise to 1,400 from Jean Ghebali. Benyamine led out for 4,200 on the {Q-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {6-Diamonds}. Giang folded, but Ghebali called. All of the remaining chips went in on the next street when the {3-Diamonds} hit. Benyamine held {6-Spades} {A-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {9-Clubs} for the nut flush draw with a gutterball straight draw; Ghebali held {K-Diamonds} {K-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} for an overpair with a flush draw of his own. The river {9-Diamonds} filled a flush, but it wasn't Benyamine's. He is out of chips and out of the tournament.

Trading Pieces

Erick Lindgren has just been eliminated from our tournament. He didn't seem too disappointed though. Now he can head off to concentrate on more important things, namely protecting his chip lead at the final table of the big H.O.R.S.E. event which resumes in just a few minutes.

On his way out, a player at his table made E-Dog a proposition: "I'll give you 90% of myself in this event in exchange for 1% of you in H.O.R.S.E." No word yet on whether or not Lindgren gives him any action on that one.

Overheard at the Tables

Daniel Negreanu was out of his seat at a neighboring table when we walked up.

"I knew you were going to say something like that," began Negreanu. "What if I said I'd eat a steak with you?"

"A tofu steak," Negreanu quickly added with a laugh.

Mike Matusow said he'd never heard of tofu steak before.

"Oh yeah, it's like tofurkey on Thanksgiving," said Negreanu.

Registration Closed

Late registration has ended. We don't have unofficial numbers yet, but it looks like the registrations topped out at 381. Late arrivals include Chris Ferguson, Johnny Chan, Howard Lederer and Todd Brunson, who are all seated together at a table in the back. It will, most likely, be the first table broken.

A Reminder About Chip Counts

Players begin the tournament with 10,000 in tournament chips plus a red reload chip that is good for another 10,000 chips at a time of the players' choosing. This red chip is not in play, must be redeemed between hands, and has no cash or tournament value during the deal. Some will choose to use it right when they sit down; others will wait until they need the extra chips. If they do not spend their red chip by the end of level three, the 10,000 reload chips will be added to their stack at that time, for a total of 20,000 starting chips. Be aware that our chip counts do not indicate whether a player has reloaded or not, so they may be misleading up until the mandatory add-on at the end of level three.
