Paradise Lost

Just before the break, Darren Paradise had his shorter-stacked opponent all in with the board showing {3-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{K-Spades}{3-Hearts}. Things were looking good for Paradise, as he held {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}, having his opponent's {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs} in sad shape.

But the {A-Hearts} popped out on the river, giving his opponent the bigger boat and Paradise got knocked back down to 10,500.

Sundbo Doubles

Sverre Sundbo
Sverre Sundbo
On a board of {7-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} Sverre Sundbo went into the tank with a huge decision for his tournament life. After what seemed like an eternity, Sundbo eventually committed all of his chips holding {4-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for a baby flush. His opponent revealed {7-Spades}{8-Spades} for just trips and would need some help to improve.

However, the river was the {3-Diamonds} and Sundbo doubled up to 25,500 chips.

Gold Steals One

On a board of {A-Hearts} {j-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} {A-Spades} {J-Spades}, Jamie Gold fired out a bet of 2,000 chips. The two other players in the hand with him both folded.

"Stolen, baby!" exulted Gold, clapping his hands. He turned over {10-Clubs} {10-Diamonds}. That pot was the first one for Gold in quite a while. He has seemed frustrated over the last half hour, unhappily snapping at other players several times. He's down to 8,000.

Nice Call

With the board reading {K-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} {9-Clubs} {A-Spades} {3-Hearts}, Haralabos Voulgaris bet 6,800. His opponent thought about it for about 30 seconds before making the call. "I have a pair," Voulgaris said, showing {K-Clubs} {10-Clubs}. His opponent looked at his cards and seemed quite happy to roll over {K-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} for the chop.

A Curious-- or Perhaps Genius-- Fold

On a flop of {Q-Hearts} {9-Spades} {4-Clubs}, Theo Tran checked from middle position, the cutoff bet 2,000, the button called and Tran called. The turn was the {8-Diamonds}. This time, Tran led for 3,500, the cutoff folded and the button called. The river was the {K-Diamonds}. Tran bet 11,500. After a stint in the tank, the button folded {Q-?} {Q-?} face-up and Tran raked in the pot. He's now up to 35,000.

A Mellower Main Event: Same Big Dance, Fewer Costumes

In stark contrast to the circus atmosphere of previous Main Events, this year's "Big Dance" has started off in a remarkably mellow fashion. Aside from the fellow dressed in a wizard outfit yesterday there have been virtually no costumed players. Gone are the pimp hats, top hats, chef hats, and fur hats from yesteryear. Joe Sebok played in normal clothing rather than as a diapered bear, Jeff Madsen is back in his requisite Full Tilt gear rather than dressed as a jester and we have yet to spot any other prop bet losers dressed as superheroes.

Almost everyone we've spoken with over the past few days has commented at one point or another about how much more subdued the atmosphere has been this year. Perhaps the post-boom WSOP has left its adolescence and finally come of age?

Coren Has Kicker Problems

A late-position player made it 300 to see a flop. The cutoff seat called, as did the button and Victoria Coren in the small blind.

The four players took a flop of {A-Diamonds} {10-Clubs} {6-Clubs}. Action checked to the cutoff and he bet 725. The button passed and Coren made it 1,600 to play. The initial raiser folded but the cutoff made the call. Coren and the cutoff went heads up to the {A-Hearts} turn. Coren check-called a bet of 2,700. The river fell the {Q-Hearts}, which prompted both players to check. Coren rolled over {A-Clubs} {8-Clubs} but couldn't beat the cutoff's {A-Spades} {K-Diamonds}. She tossed her hand in and was left with just under 15,000 chips.
