"The Icon" Bites His Tongue

Bryan Micon - Day 1d
Bryan Micon - Day 1d
Bryan Micon, after being moved to the Blue Section, took his seat at Table 18 and sat down. An excited Micon, without really glancing at the players at his new table said something along the lines of...

"Hello gentlemen...once you double me up, you're in trouble."

He then proceeded to look around the table and after spotting Shawn Sheikhan and Johnny Chan, seemed to realize the company he was in. He made an exaggerated "gulp" expression as if to illustrate he may have spoken too soon, and then quickly quieted down.

Raising Hellmuth

Ryan Hughes raised 4,000, Phil Hellmuth reraised to 25,000, and Hughes pushed his remaining chips in the middle -- just a thousand or so more than Hellmuth's bet. Hellmuth called.

Hughes showed {A-Spades}{10-Hearts}, and Hellmuth {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}. The flop was {Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}, putting Hughes in the lead. But the turn was the {K-Hearts}, giving it back to Hellmuth. The river was the {A-Hearts}, and Hughes is out. Hellmuth is now up to 218,000.

"Overpair" is Relative

From under the gun, a player raised to 3,200 and was called by both Michael Palermo and Adam Schwartz on down the line. The three-way flop came out {3-?} {3-?} {2-?}. The raiser checked, and Palermo bet out all in for 17,700. Schwartz made the call, and the third man ducked out of the hand.

Palermo: {7-?} {7-?}
Schwartz: {8-?} {8-?}

Palermo was caught in a bad spot, and the turn and river -- {2-?} and {10-?} -- did nothing to improve his plight. After running into a bigger pair, he heads for the door.

Joe Hachem Has Been Eliminated

Joe Hachem
Joe Hachem
And a sick little hand it was. The player under the gun raised to 3,000 and three other players called before it got to Hachem in the big blind. He made the call and the five players saw a {5-Clubs} {2-Clubs} {2-Spades} flop. Hachem moved in for his last 13,000, the original raiser called, and another player shoved for his last 29,400. The original raiser called and his {K-Hearts} {K-Clubs} was pitted against Hachem's flush draw with {J-Clubs} {6-Clubs} and the other player's...{Q-Clubs} {Q-Spades}.

And it was one good turn for that player as the {Q-Hearts} spiked to give him a set and the lead. With the crowd gathered close around the table calling for a club, the river brought the {J-Hearts} instead, and Hachem was eliminated. Had the player with queens reraised before the flop, Hachem doesn't call and doesn't go broke. But he didn't, and Joe did. And so the Main Event is over for the 2005 World Champion.

A Tale of Two Bluffs

It was the best of times (for Bertrand Grospellier), it was the worst of times (for Tiffany Michelle). Michelle tried to run a bluff on Grospellier by bettting 6,000 on the turn of a {J-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {3-Diamonds} board, then betting 10,000 when the river fell {J-Hearts}. Grospellier called both bets with {5-Hearts} {3-Clubs}, which turned out to be the winning hand, jacks and threes.

A few hands later, Grospellier bluffed Dave Stann by betting 17,200 on the river with the board showing {5-Hearts} {2-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts}. Stann didn't have much -- he flashed {A-?} {7-?} before mucking -- but it was more than Grospellier, who flashed {8-Spades} {6-Spades}. That brought some choice words from Stann, who intimated that Grospellier shouldn't keep playing that way if he values his tournament life.

Ramdin Rolling

After an opponent had raised to 3,000 before the flop, Victor Ramdin reraised to 10,000, and his opponent shoved all in for 25,000 total. Ramdin called, and showed {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}. His opponent held pocket jacks.

A king flopped, and no jack came to save Ramdin's opponent. Ramdin is up to 255,000.

We Hardly Knew Ye

Gavin Kelly, who came into play today with 38,150 in chips but never took his seat on Day 2, has been eliminated. He was blinded off during the day and the last of his chips just went into the pot.

Who's Rouhani...

On the turn, with the board showing, {K-Hearts} {2-Hearts} {10-Hearts} {8-Diamonds}, Farzad Rouhani moved all in and was called. His opponent had him covered. Rouhani showed {A-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} for the nut flush and his opponent showed {10-Clubs} {10-Spades} for a set of tens. Only a paired board would save Rouhani's opponent. The {7-Hearts} on the river gave Rouhani the hand and he now sits with 133,500 in chips.

Back to Stocks for Shak

In an earlier event during this year's World Series, Dan Shak set his laptop up near our media table and spent the better part of the evening running between his poker table and his laptop to trade stocks. We didn't see him trading stocks tonight, but he suddenly has a lot more free time to do so.

He raised to 3,500 preflop and was called by Chrstian Oman. The flop came down {Q-Hearts} {4-Spades} {4-Diamonds}. Shak fired out a bet of 10,000 and again Oman called. On the {6-Diamonds} turn, Shak made a large bet of 25,000. Oman, who had Shak covered, raised all in. Shak called.

Shak: {A-Clubs} {A-Hearts}
Oman: {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs}

Oman flopped a full house and won the pot when Shak couldn't spear an ace on the river. Shak was eliminated on the hand.
