Grizzle to the Penalty Box

Sam Grizzle's at the middle of another controversy on Brasilia #189. We're not sure what happened -- someone called someone an idiot, someone else called someone else a moron -- but TD Bill Bruce pulled Grizzle aside and seems to have given him a penalty, as Grizzle has been instructed to stand away from the table.

It may have something to do with a hand against John Juanda. Juanda raised sixth street, x-x / {7-Hearts} {10-Diamonds} {4-Spades} {Q-Hearts} against Grizzle's x-x / {K-Hearts} {10-Hearts} {3-Hearts} {J-Diamonds}. Grizzle clled, then check-called one more bet on the river. Juanda rolled over {4-Clubs} {4-Hearts} {2-Spades} for trip fours, irritating Grizzle, who showed down queens and tens with {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Spades} {10-Clubs}.

Dutch Making a Run?

This first level of the day is still treating Dutch Boyd very kindly. He made aces and threes on sixth street against an opponent who had him beat on fifth street with aces and several higher kickers. Boyd's opponent finished with four to a flush, four to Broadway and a pair of aces, not enough to bet Boyd's aces and threes.

A few hands later Boyd was dealt {K-Spades} {J-Spades} / {10-Diamonds} and went for a short-stack kill after being dealt the {Q-Clubs} on fourth street. The short stack was all in with {A-Spades} {A-Hearts} / {3-Diamonds} {7-Hearts} and never improved. Boyd, however, drew the {9-Hearts} on the river to make a king-high straight.

Boyd is now the chip leader with 68,500 chips.

Aces Up No Good for Devonshire

"So sick," complained Bryan Devonshire. He was dealt split aces to start, {A-Spades} {9-Spades} / {A-Diamonds}, and made aces and nines by fifth street, where he got all of his chips in. Devonshire's opponent, Massimiliano Lupi, also started with splits aces, {A-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds} / {A-Hearts}, and also made two pair on fifth street, aces and queens. Devonshire caught running sixes on sixth and seventh streets for three pair, none of which were enough to prevent his elimination from the tournament.

Lupi is up to 25,000.

"Nasty" John Cernuto

We picked up the action on sixth street between "Miami" John Cernuto and overnight chip leader David Levi. Levi showed a board of x-x / {2-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} {k-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds} and bet out. Cernuto called with x-x / {A-Hearts} {3-Clubs} {4-Hearts} {2-Clubs}.

On the river, Levi checked to Cernuto, who fired out a bet. "I know you straightened," said Levi. He folded his hand. Cernuto then flashed {8-Clubs} {6-Clubs} {Q-Hearts} in the hole for ace-high!

"I didn't know you're nasty," remarked Levi.

Mel Judah Eliminated

Mel Judah knew he didn't have many hands left in his stack. He decided to go with a board of x-x / {8-Diamonds} {Q-Spades} {10-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} against Jeff Lisandro's x-x / {Q-Hearts} {6-Clubs} {A-Hearts} {A-Diamonds}. It turned out to be a case of bad timing for Judah; Lisandro had a third ace in the hole. At showdown, his trip aces took the pot and knocked Judah out of the tournament.

Dutch Goes Up at Eli's Expense

Dutch Boyd -- yes that Dutch Boyd -- is in the field and doing well to start the day. He tangled with Eli Elezra and emerged victorious. We picked the action up on fifth street, with Boyd showing x-x / {8-Hearts} {8-Spades} {4-Hearts} and Elezra showing x-x / {A-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {2-Hearts}. Boyd check-called a bet to sixth street, where each player caught ten. Boyd check-called again.

On the river, it was a third check for Boyd. Elezra fired one more time, and Boyd clled one more time with {8-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} {J-Hearts} for trip eights. That beat Elezra's aces up to give Dutch the pot and a total count of 51,000.

Elezra is down to 29,000.

Jabberjaw Grizzle

"You ever played Stud before?" Sam Grizzle asked Michael Mizrachi after watching Mizrachi concede a small pot to John Juanda. "Or are you just playing for the bracelet?"

Mizrachi made a disgusted face at first, then conceded that he was playing for the bracelet. "What are you playing for?" he asked Grizzle.

"I'm trying to get my money back playing with you geniuses!" Grizzle replied.

Mercier Gets Richer

Jason Mercier already has one gold bracelet to his credit at the 2009 World Series of Poker. He's going for number two in this event and has built up a head of steam. He raised a {Q-Diamonds} door card after Mel Judah completed the {4-Diamonds}. A third player behind Mercier re-raised the {A-Clubs}, bringing a prolonged tank from Judah before he folded.

Mercier called the raise on third, then called bets on fourth, fifth and sixth streets. At the river, the boards were:

Mercier: x-x / {Q-Diamonds} {9-Clubs} {J-Hearts} {A-Hearts} / x
Opponent: x-x / {A-Clubs} {2-Clubs} {7-Spades} {10-Spades} / x

Mercier led out with a bet that was called, then turned over {A-Spades} {J-Diamonds} {k-Clubs} in the hole for two pair, aces and jacks. They were good.

One Down...

...95 to go. Charles Schutz started the day with the shortest of short stacks. It didn't take him long to get it in with split eights. Jeff Lisandro called with {9-?} {J-?} {10-?} and made a king-high straight by sixth street. Schultz could only come up with two pair.

"96 players," said Schutz as he left the table.
